The image was old, slightly faded, but my father’s face was unmistakable. He had been younger than I remembered, perhaps thirty-five, standing beside my grandmother outside the Vale estate.

I had seen that estate hundreds of times as a child.

I had never seen that photograph.

“Where did you find the signature?” I asked.

David held his tablet beneath the garage lights.

“In the supplemental trust records. Your grandmother added an amendment shortly after your father’s reported death.”

“My father died when I was eleven.”

“I know.”

“And this document is dated three days later?”

“Yes.”

“That isn't possible.”

David didn't answer.

I looked at him.

“You believe it.”

“I believe the document exists. Whether the signature is genuine is a different question.”

I stared at the screen again.

The handwriting looked like my father’s.

The same narrow letters.

The same slight upward angle on the final stroke of his surname.

I remembered watching him sign birthday cards when I was little. I remembered thinking his handwriting looked hurried even when he wasn't.

“What did my grandmother do with this document?”

“She sealed it.”

“Where?”

“In the estate archives.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then we're going there.”

David looked toward my car.

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“You should sleep.”

“I haven't slept properly since I was twenty-nine.”

He almost smiled.

I didn't.

“I'm serious.”

“So am I.”

We drove separately.

The Vale estate stood forty minutes outside the city, behind a long iron gate and a line of old trees that had become almost skeletal beneath the October rain.

I had not been there since my grandmother’s funeral.

The house looked exactly as I remembered it.

Tall windows.

Gray stone.

A wide staircase leading to the front entrance.

And the carved initials V.V. above the doorway.

My grandmother had hated modern renovations.

She used to say that houses carried memory through their walls, and removing old things simply because they were old was a form of arrogance.

I never understood that either.

Until tonight.

David unlocked the side entrance using a key he had retained from the estate administration.

Inside, the house smelled of cedar and dust.

Nothing had changed.

My childhood piano stood beneath a white sheet.

A portrait of my grandmother hung above the fireplace.

I stopped beneath it.

She was wearing the sapphire bracelet.

The same bracelet Celeste had worn at the gala.

My grandmother was looking directly at the painter.

Her expression was stern.

Almost amused.

“She knew,” I whispered.

David stood behind me.

“Knew what?”

“That one day someone would try to take everything.”

He didn't answer.

We crossed the library.

At the back was a narrow door I had never been allowed to open.

I remembered it immediately.

As a child, I had once asked what was behind it.

My grandmother had said, “Nothing that concerns you.”

That answer had fascinated me.

I had tried the handle once.

She had caught me.

She had never raised her voice.

She had simply said, “Never open that door again.”

I had obeyed.

Until tonight.

David produced a second key.

The lock resisted before finally turning.

The door opened into darkness.

There were shelves along every wall.

Boxes.

Ledgers.

Old photographs.

Legal files.

A steel cabinet stood against the far wall.

David switched on the lights.

I stared.

“This was here all along?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Your grandmother's instructions were explicit.”

I walked toward the steel cabinet.

A small brass plate carried one word.

VALE.

David unlocked it.

Inside were twelve folders.

Eleven were labeled with dates.

The twelfth had my name.

I reached for it.

David stopped me.

“There's something you should know.”

“What?”

“Your grandmother left instructions that this folder should not be opened until after Marcus attempted to interfere with your protected assets.”

I stared at him.

“She knew.”

“She anticipated the possibility.”

I opened the folder.

The first page was handwritten.

My grandmother’s handwriting.

Evelyn,

If you are reading this, then someone has finally made the mistake I spent years preparing for.

I had to sit down.

David remained silent.

The next page contained a list of names.

Marcus.

Lenora.

The chief financial officer.

And one more name.

My father.

I looked at David.

“My father is on the list.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

The letter explained that my father had not died from the accident everyone believed had killed him.

He had survived.

For three days.

During those three days, he had contacted my grandmother.

He had told her that someone within the family business was moving money through foreign accounts.

He believed the theft had been discovered.

He also believed his life was in danger.

My hands shook.

“Why did she let me believe he died?”

David answered quietly.

“Because she believed you were safer that way.”

I kept reading.

My father had asked her to protect me.

Not from strangers.

From family.

He had discovered that someone was using his name to establish hidden accounts.

He suspected his brother.

My uncle.

A man I had been told had died overseas when I was fourteen.

I looked up.

“My uncle?”

David nodded.

“Your grandmother's records indicate he disappeared shortly after your father's death.”

“Disappeared?”

“Yes.”

The word felt wrong.

People died.

People left.

But disappeared belonged to another category.

I turned the page.

There was another photograph.

My father.

My grandmother.

And the same unknown man from the photograph on my phone.

This time, however, the man was standing beside my uncle.

I recognized him.

My uncle had been called Daniel.

He had been my father's younger brother.

And the man standing beside him was not a stranger.

It was Daniel himself.

I looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then I noticed something.

My uncle was wearing the same silver watch.

The one David had recognized.

I closed the folder.

“Where is he?”

David's expression was grave.

“We don't know.”

“But my grandmother did.”

“She may have.”

I opened the folder again.

At the bottom of the last page was an address.

Not the estate.

Not an office.

A warehouse.

In the old river district.

Beside it, my grandmother had written six words.

If Daniel returns, do not trust him.

I stared at the warning.

Then another line caught my attention.

If he returns with Marcus, run.

I looked at David.

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly the story had changed.

Marcus had not been the beginning.

He might not even have been the person directing the plan.

He might have been another piece on the board.

I heard a sound outside.

A car door closing.

David immediately switched off the lights.

We stood in darkness.

Footsteps crossed the gravel outside.

Slow.

Measured.

Then someone tried the front door.

Once.

Twice.

The handle moved.

David whispered, “Don't move.”

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came through the house.

A man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Almost familiar.

“Evelyn?”

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it in childhood recordings.

I had heard it in old home videos.

My father.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The
