looked at me.

“Because Daniel was moving again.”

“And you knew Marcus would be involved.”

“Yes.”

“You could have warned me earlier.”

“I tried.”

“How?”

“I contacted David.”

David glanced at us from the front.

“He sent me documents six weeks ago.”

I turned.

“You knew my father was alive?”

David nodded.

“I didn't know where he was.”

My father said, “That was deliberate.”

I looked away.

Another secret.

Another person who had known more about my life than I had.

By sunrise, we reached the hotel where Celeste had been staying.

Security allowed us upstairs after David identified himself.

Celeste opened the door herself.

She looked exhausted.

She had changed out of the silver gown.

Her hair was loose.

Her face was bare.

For the first time, she looked like a woman instead of the carefully constructed image I had seen at the gala.

When she saw my father behind me, she froze.

“You're alive.”

He nodded.

She stepped backward.

“You knew.”

Celeste looked at me.

“Yes.”

“About my father?”

“No.”

“About Daniel?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

I walked inside.

“Then start talking.”

She closed the door.

Marcus had told her he could give her a new life.

That was the first thing she admitted.

He had promised an apartment in New York.

A position in one of his companies.

Enough money to leave the country.

He had told her his marriage was already finished.

He had told her Evelyn was wealthy enough not to care about the separation.

I listened without interrupting.

“Did he tell you about the reserve?”

She shook her head.

“Not at first.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

“And what did he say?”

“That you were hiding money.”

“From him?”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“He said your grandmother had left you an enormous trust and that you were deliberately keeping it away from him.”

I almost laughed.

“He told you I was dishonest.”

“Yes.”

“And you believed him.”

“I wanted to.”

That answer was honest enough to hurt.

“Why?”

“Because I loved him.”

I looked at her.

“Do you still?”

She hesitated.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“What changed?”

“I saw what he was willing to do.”

She told us that Marcus had begun receiving instructions from someone else.

He would disappear for hours.

He would meet people without telling her where.

He became increasingly nervous.

Then he gave her the silver gown.

“He told me to wear it.”

“Why?”

“To make you angry.”

“And the ring?”

“He said it would make you understand that he had chosen me.”

My hands tightened.

“What about the bracelet?”

“He said your grandmother's jewelry would make the message stronger.”

I looked at my father.

His jaw was tight.

Celeste continued.

“I didn't know the gala was going to expose the financial records.”

“Did Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know he would be removed?”

“No.”

“Then what did he expect?”

“He expected you to leave.”

I nodded.

That matched everything.

“What would happen after I left?”

Celeste looked at David.

He answered for her.

“The legal separation clause.”

She nodded.

Marcus had told her that once I left voluntarily, the trust restrictions would become easier to challenge.

He planned to argue that I had abandoned the marriage and that he had been financially dependent on me.

It was manipulative.

But it was not enough to transfer the protected assets.

There was another step.

“What was Marcus supposed to receive?”

Celeste hesitated.

“Ten million.”

The room became silent.

“From whom?”

“Daniel.”

My father leaned forward.

“When?”

“After the reserve was accessed.”

David asked:

“Did Marcus know Daniel was your uncle?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

“How long?”

“About a year.”

I stared at her.

“Then he knew.”

“Yes.”

I asked the question that had been haunting me.

“Did he know my father was alive?”

“No.”

She sounded certain.

“How do you know?”

“Because I heard him argue with Daniel about it.”

My father looked at her.

“What did Daniel say?”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“He said your father was dead and that anyone claiming otherwise was lying.”

My father said nothing.

Celeste continued.

“Marcus asked Daniel why he was so afraid of a dead man.”

“What did Daniel say?”

“He said, ‘Because dead men don't leave evidence.’”

David looked at me.

The phrase mattered.

My grandmother's archive.

The reserve.

The records.

Everything connected.

Celeste reached into a drawer.

“I kept something.”

She handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a key card.

“Where does this go?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why keep it?”

“Marcus told me never to lose it.”

David examined the card.

“There is a number.”

I read it.

“V-7.”

The same code from Marcus’s encrypted correspondence.

My father stood.

“That's not an account.”

“What is it?”

“A storage facility.”

David looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“I used it before I disappeared.”

I stared at my father.

“You knew about V-7.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell us?”

“Because I thought it was empty.”

“Now?”

He looked at the card.

“Now I don't.”

We drove to the storage facility that afternoon.

The building stood behind a row of abandoned warehouses.

David used the key card.

A green light appeared.

Inside the unit were boxes.

Hundreds.

Most contained financial records.

Some contained photographs.

One box was labeled with my name.

I opened it.

Inside was my childhood diary.

My breath caught.

I had lost that diary when I was twelve.

I looked at my father.

“How did this get here?”

“I don't know.”

I opened the first page.

My handwriting.

My childish complaints.

School.

Friends.

My mother.

My father.

Then the final entry.

I had written it two days before his supposed death.

I remembered that week.

My father had been acting strangely.

He had hugged me for a long time.

He had told me to always trust my grandmother.

I had thought it was sentimental.

The entry contained one sentence I had completely forgotten.

Dad said if anyone asks me where he went, I should say I don't know.

I stared at the page.

David read it.

My father closed his eyes.

“You knew,” I said.

He nodded.

“I was trying to prepare you.”

“You knew you might disappear.”

“Yes.”

“And you still left.”

“Yes.”

I shut the diary.

Then I saw another file.

Marcus.

Inside was a contract.

His signature appeared on the final page.

The agreement promised him ten million dollars.

But there was a condition.

He would receive nothing unless Evelyn Vale voluntarily surrendered control of the reserve.

My stomach turned.

“This is the real agreement.”

David read it.

“Yes.”

“Then Marcus never had control.”

“No.”

“Daniel did.”

“Yes.”

My father looked at the document.

“There is more.”

He pointed to the final paragraph.

I read it.

If Evelyn refuses, the secondary plan will proceed.

“What is the secondary plan?”

Nobody answered.

Then David noticed the date.

The agreement had been signed three weeks before the gala.

But the secondary plan was dated tomorrow.

I looked at him.

“Tomorrow?”

He nodded.

“What happens tomorrow?”

My father took the document from my hands.

His expression changed.

“Your grandmother's estate auction.”

I stared.

“The estate isn't being sold.”

“It is now.”

David checked his phone.

“There is an auction notice.”

I looked at the house in my mind.

The archive.

The trust records.

Everything my grandmother had protected.

If the estate were sold, the archive could disappear.

“Who bought it?”

David's face went still.

He turned the screen toward me.

The buyer's company name appeared.

A company I had never heard before.

But beneath it was the registered director.

Daniel Vale.

My uncle.

My father looked at me.

“He's back.”

I folded the contract.

“Then tomorrow, we stop him.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Daniel Returned to the
