Less haunted. More vulnerable. The windows reflected a pale sky, and the wet stone steps still carried traces of last night’s rain.

Three black cars were parked along the drive.

People were already arriving.

I recognized two lawyers from the firm that had handled my grandmother’s estate. I recognized a property assessor. I recognized several strangers wearing expressions that belonged to people who had come to buy something rather than remember it.

Then I saw him.

Daniel stood beneath the portico.

He was older than the man in the photograph, but there was no mistaking him. The same narrow face. The same silver watch. The same posture my father had carried when I was a child.

He looked at me and smiled.

“Evelyn.”

My father stopped walking.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

For several seconds, the two brothers simply stared at each other.

My father whispered, “Daniel.”

Daniel looked almost amused.

“I wondered how long it would take you to come home.”

I stepped between them.

“You bought the estate.”

“I purchased the company holding the estate.”

“You knew it was protected.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Daniel glanced toward the house.

“Because your grandmother made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“She believed documents could protect people.”

David stepped forward.

“Mr. Vale, the sale is subject to litigation.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Not yet.”

“The trust restrictions—”

“Have already been challenged.”

I felt a chill.

“By whom?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“By your husband.”

Marcus.

I had not expected that.

“Marcus filed the challenge?”

“Three days ago.”

David pulled out his phone.

“I'll verify that.”

Daniel smiled.

“You should.”

I watched him carefully.

He wasn't nervous.

That bothered me more than anger would have.

“What do you want?”

He looked at me.

“The archive.”

I said nothing.

“The reserve is irrelevant now,” he continued. “What matters is what your the archive was protected by a biometric lock.”

I stared.

“What?”

Daniel's smile returned.

“Your grandmother was sentimental about bloodlines.”

My father stepped forward.

“You can't access it.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Not without Evelyn.”

I understood.

The hidden room had been designed so that only I could open something deeper.

The key had not been enough.

The archive was only the beginning.

Daniel wanted what came after it.

“What is behind the second door?” I asked.

His expression changed.

“You found it.”

My father looked at me.

I realized I had just confirmed more than I intended.

Daniel laughed softly.

“She was always clever.”

“Who?”

“Your grandmother.”

He walked down the steps.

“When she discovered what your father had done, she moved everything.”

My father stiffened.

“What I did?”

Daniel looked at him.

“You disappeared.”

“To protect my daughter.”

“To protect yourself.”

My father stepped forward.

“I exposed you.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You exposed nothing.”

“You know that's a lie.”

Daniel looked back at me.

“Your father always believed truth was enough.”

“And you?”

“I believe leverage is enough.”

He turned toward the estate.

“Come inside.”

“No.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

He studied me.

“You have until noon.”

“For what?”

“To open the archive.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then the estate transfers.”

David stepped forward.

“That sale can be challenged.”

Daniel nodded.

“Eventually.”

He looked at me.

“But by then, the archive will be destroyed.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You would destroy it?”

“If I cannot have it, nobody will.”

My father grabbed my arm.

“We're leaving.”

Daniel called after us.

“You should ask your mother why she signed the original transfer.”

I stopped.

My father went still.

Daniel smiled.

“There are still things you don't know.”

We returned to the car.

David immediately began making calls.

I stood beside my father.

“What transfer?”

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

He looked at me.

“Your mother signed something when she was threatened.”

“What?”

“A temporary authorization.”

“For what?”

“To move assets.”

“Whose assets?”

He looked away.

“Mine.”

My chest tightened.

“Then Daniel used her signature.”

“Yes.”

“And my grandmother knew.”

“Yes.”

I turned toward the estate.

“Then why did she keep all of this hidden?”

“Because she was trying to build a case.”

David approached.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The auction has already been suspended.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because someone filed an emergency injunction.”

“Who?”

David looked at me.

“You.”

I blinked.

“I didn't.”

He showed me the document.

My name appeared beneath a digital signature.

Someone had filed the injunction in my name.

Daniel had not been bluffing.

Someone was using my identity.

David's face tightened.

“This is forged.”

“Can you prove it?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Hours.”

Daniel appeared at the front door again.

He raised his phone.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Come alone.**

Then another.

*Or your father dies this time for real.**

I looked at my father.

He had seen my expression.

“What did he send?”

I locked the screen.

“Nothing.”

My father shook his head.

“Don't lie to me.”

I looked toward the house.

Daniel was watching us.

I finally understood the point of the threat.

He didn't need to hurt my father.

He needed me frightened enough to act alone.

That was exactly what Marcus had done at the gala.

Exactly what Daniel had expected.

But he had forgotten something.

I had stopped playing the role they had written for me.

I turned to David.

“Can you get the police here?”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

My father looked at me.

“And then?”

I looked at the estate.

“Then we go inside.”

Click here to continue reading: PART
