Steam curled from the spout, and the smell of cinnamon from the muffins cooling on the counter filled the kitchen. Outside the window, our neighborhood looked exactly as it always did—trim lawns, parked cars, sprinklers ticking over flower beds. Nothing in that ordinary morning seemed capable of holding a sentence like the one Vanessa had just delivered.

I turned slowly toward her.

“Excuse me?”

Vanessa gave a small laugh. She was recently divorced, though she spoke about her marriage as if she had escaped from a prison rather than ended a relationship. She had moved into the house two doors down from ours only a few weeks earlier, and until that moment I had considered her merely another neighbor.

“You heard me,” she said.

She was younger than me by several years, carefully dressed even for a weekday morning. Her blond hair was smooth, her nails immaculate, and there was something practiced about the way she looked at people. She never seemed to glance at you accidentally. Her eyes always lingered just long enough to make you wonder what she had noticed.

I put two mugs on the counter.

“Vanessa, are you joking?”

“Not really.”

She picked up one of the muffins without asking.

I watched her take a bite.

Then she said, almost conversationally, “Men get bored after seventeen years.”

That number made my stomach tighten.

Seventeen years.

That was how long Irvin and I had been married.

We had married young enough that our wedding photographs now looked like pictures of different people. We had survived bad jobs, tight finances, family arguments, illnesses, home repairs, birthdays that came and went too quickly, and the quiet years when nothing dramatic happened at all.

Those quiet years mattered to me.

Maybe they mattered more than anything else.

Irvin wasn’t the kind of husband who sent roses every Friday or wrote sentimental messages in the middle of the day. He showed love in smaller ways. He remembered that I hated the sound of the bathroom fan and fixed it before I complained. He brought home the brand of coffee I liked without being reminded. If he noticed I was tired, he washed the dishes without making a performance of it.

Our marriage wasn’t perfect.

I had never expected perfection.

What I had expected was loyalty.

Vanessa wiped a crumb from her fingertip and looked toward the window.

“I’ve seen the way he looks at me.”

I nearly laughed.

Instead, I asked, “Have you?”

“Yes.”

“I haven’t.”

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means I live with him.”

Her smile disappeared for just a moment.

Then it returned.

“I suppose we’ll see.”

She left five minutes later.

I stood in the kitchen long after the front door closed.

I didn’t tell Irvin immediately.

That decision surprised me.

Part of me wanted to call him at work and demand an explanation for something he had not even done. Another part wanted to confront Vanessa again, force her to admit that she was being cruel, and make sure she understood that I wasn’t frightened.

Instead, I cleaned the kitchen.

I put the remaining muffins into a container.

I wiped the counter twice.

Then I went upstairs and stood in front of the bedroom mirror.

I wasn’t looking for flaws.

At least, that was what I told myself.

But when you hear another woman say she plans to replace you, your mind begins measuring everything you have spent years refusing to measure.

My hair was streaked with a few strands of silver.

There were faint lines around my eyes.

I had stopped buying clothes simply because they were fashionable. I had become practical without noticing when it happened.

Vanessa wore fitted dresses at ten in the morning.

I wore an old sweater and jeans.

I stared at myself for a long time.

Then I remembered something.

Irvin had never once told me he wanted someone else.

Not once.

That thought steadied me.

By dinner, I had decided not to mention Vanessa unless there was a reason.

Irvin came home carrying a paper bag from the hardware store. He kissed my forehead, put the bag on the counter, and began telling me about a broken cabinet hinge he’d noticed at work.

I listened.

I watched him.

He looked tired.

Ordinary.

Familiar.

There was no secret smile, no nervousness, no sign that he had been waiting all day to see Vanessa.

When he finished talking, he asked, “Why are you staring at me?”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

I smiled.

“Maybe I missed you.”

He leaned against the counter.

“You saw me this morning.”

“I know.”

He kissed me again.

The moment passed.

But Vanessa’s words did not.

Over the next week, she became impossible to ignore.

At first, her behavior was subtle.

She would happen to be outside whenever Irvin left for work.

If he was washing his car, Vanessa suddenly needed to check her mailbox.

If he carried groceries from the trunk, she would appear at the edge of her driveway and ask some harmless question.

One afternoon, she knocked on our door while I was preparing a batch of cinnamon rolls for a customer.

“Hi,” she said brightly.

“Hi.”

“I saw Irvin outside.”

“He’s in the garage.”

“Oh.”

She glanced past me.

The movement was brief, but deliberate.

Then she smiled.

“I actually came to ask him something.”

I stepped aside.

“He’ll be out in a minute.”

She entered without being invited.

That bothered me more than it should have.

She walked into the kitchen and looked at the trays lined along the counter.

“You still make all these?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know how you have the patience.”

“It’s my business.”

“I know.”

She ran a finger over the edge of a cooling rack without touching the food.

Then she said, “You must spend an awful lot of time at home.”

I looked at her.

“Usually.”

“That explains it.”

“What does?”

She smiled.

“Nothing.”

Before I could answer, Irvin came through the back door.

Vanessa’s entire expression changed.

Her shoulders straightened.

Her smile became warmer.

“Hi, Irvin.”

“Hey, Vanessa.”

“I wanted to ask you about that fence.”

He listened while she explained a problem with one of the boards separating our properties.

It was completely ordinary.

So ordinary that I almost felt ridiculous for noticing the way she stood closer to him than necessary.

Almost.

When she left, Irvin looked at me.

“You’re quiet.”

“I’ve been quiet all afternoon.”

“No, different quiet.”

I turned back to the cinnamon rolls.

“Vanessa likes you.”

He laughed.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He looked genuinely confused.

“Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“She barely knows me.”

“She knows enough.”

He shook his head.

“Claire, she just got divorced.”

“I know.”

“She probably needs friends.”

I stopped moving.

“She told me she’s going to take you.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

I repeated Vanessa’s exact words.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he frowned.

“That’s not funny.”

“I didn’t think it was.”

“Did she really say that?”

“Yes.”

He rubbed his jaw.

“I’ll talk to her.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t want you confronting her.”

“Then what do you want me to do?”

I looked at him.

“I want you to understand what she’s doing.”

He nodded slowly.

“I do.”

I wasn’t convinced.

The next morning, Vanessa waved at him from her driveway.

Irvin waved back.

It was innocent.

That was the problem.

There was nothing I could point to without sounding unreasonable.

And Vanessa seemed to understand that.

She never crossed the line loudly.

She kept one foot on the safe side of it.

Then she started finding excuses to cross the property line.

A package for Irvin was delivered to her house by mistake.

She brought it over herself.

A week later, she borrowed a screwdriver.

Then she asked Irvin if he knew anything about repairing a loose cabinet.

Then she asked him about a contractor.

Each request was small enough to be dismissed.

Together, they formed a pattern.

One evening, I watched from our upstairs window as Vanessa stood beside Irvin in the driveway.

She laughed.

Irvin said something.

She touched his arm.

It lasted less than a second.

Then she looked toward the house.

Straight at me.

She smiled.

That was when I knew.

She hadn’t accidentally seen me.

She had been checking whether I was watching.

I closed the curtain.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I thought Irvin was leaving me.

Not yet.

I was angry because Vanessa was trying to make me doubt something I had spent seventeen years building.

She wasn’t simply pursuing my husband.

She was testing whether she could make me react.

And I suddenly understood something else.

If I reacted exactly the way she wanted, she would win before Irvin ever made a choice.

So I made one of my own.

I wasn’t going to compete with Vanessa.

I was going to let her show me exactly how far she intended to go.
