A season. A stretch of ordinary mornings and evenings. Now every day felt attached to something.

I had customers waiting for me to reopen.

I had paperwork stacked beside my mixing bowls.

And I had a marriage that had survived something I never imagined it would have to survive.

Irvin and I were better than we had been during those first difficult weeks, but better didn't mean untouched. We had learned that trust wasn't simply believing someone would never betray you. Sometimes it meant admitting when you had handled something badly and refusing to hide behind good intentions.

Irvin had become more transparent without making a performance of it. If Vanessa appeared outside, he told me. If someone from the neighborhood mentioned the bakery, he told me. If he was going to be late, he called.

I never demanded those things.

That mattered.

He offered them because he understood why they mattered.

The bakery, meanwhile, became my obsession.

Every morning, I drove to the rented commercial kitchen before sunrise. The first time I unlocked the door, the room smelled faintly of yeast and industrial cleaner. The stainless-steel counters were cold beneath my palms, and the ovens hummed with the deep mechanical sound of equipment built to work for hours.

It wasn't my kitchen.

Not yet.

But I began making it feel like mine.

I brought my own measuring cups.

My own piping bags.

My own handwritten recipe cards.

I taped a small photograph of my first wedding cake inside one cabinet door.

It was crooked.

I left it that way.

The first few orders were small.

A dozen cupcakes.

A birthday cake.

A tray of decorated cookies.

Then people started calling again.

Some customers returned because they liked my work.

Others returned because they had heard I was trying to rebuild.

I didn't ask which reason brought them back.

I simply thanked them.

One Friday afternoon, I received an order request from a new customer.

The name stopped me.

Vanessa Miller.

I stared at the screen.

For several seconds, I thought it had to be someone else.

Then I opened the details.

A cake for a dinner party.

Twenty servings.

Vanilla sponge.

Raspberry filling.

White buttercream.

Delivery requested to Vanessa's address.

I leaned back in my chair.

The commercial kitchen was almost empty.

A refrigerator compressor clicked on somewhere behind me.

I reread the order.

Then I called Irvin.

He answered on the second ring.

“Everything okay?”

“Vanessa placed an order.”

There was silence.

“For your bakery?”

“Yes.”

He exhaled.

“Cancel it.”

I almost laughed.

“That was fast.”

“I'm serious.”

“I know.”

“Why would she do that?”

“I don't know.”

He paused.

“Do you want me to come there?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

I looked again at the order.

“I'm going to accept it.”

He didn't answer.

“Claire.”

“If she wants a cake, she can buy a cake.”

“From you?”

“I'm running a business.”

He sighed.

“You're right.”

That surprised me.

“You agree?”

“Yes.”

Then he added, “But if she uses the order to start something, you don't owe her anything.”

“I know.”

I accepted the order.

That evening, I told Irvin what I had done.

He listened while we ate dinner.

“What do you think she's planning?”

“I don't know.”

“You aren't worried?”

“I am.”

He nodded.

“Good.”

I looked at him.

“Good?”

“Being worried means you're paying attention.
