records.

Irvin wanted to report it.

I wasn't against that.

But before we did anything, I wanted to understand the pattern.

The handwriting was uneven.

The letters leaned slightly to the right.

The paper was ordinary.

Nothing about it looked threatening enough to involve the police by itself.

But the sentence bothered me.

*You still haven't learned.**

Learned what?

That question became impossible to ignore.

I went back through everything.

The first complaint.

The second complaint.

The anonymous online message.

The HOA meeting.

Vanessa's invitations.

The bakery order.

Richard's again.”

“What?”

“Trying to solve everything alone.”

I looked up.

“I need to see the whole picture.”

“Then let me help.”

I moved the papers aside.

“Okay.”

He sat down.

We started with the earliest event.

Vanessa's arrival.

Then her first conversation with me.

Then the invitations.

Then the bakery complaint.

Then the anonymous messages.

The timeline looked different when we wrote everything down.

Some events connected.

Others didn't.

The biggest gap was between Vanessa's first threat and the first bakery complaint.

Who knew about the conversation?

Nobody, as far as I knew.

Except me.

Vanessa.

And eventually Irvin.

But the complaint contained details Vanessa could have learned from watching me.

That didn't prove anything.

Then there was Richard.

He had a clear motive against home businesses.

But why would he care about my marriage?

He wouldn't.

The note was personal.

That meant there might still be another person involved.

I called Vanessa.

She answered cautiously.

“What?”

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“When you first moved here, did you know anyone in the neighborhood?”

She was quiet.

“A few people.”

“Who?”

“Richard.”

“Anyone else?”

She hesitated.

“My former husband's brother.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He lives nearby.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it wasn't relevant.”

“What's his name?”

“Daniel.”

I looked at Irvin.

Daniel.

The former delivery driver.

The name on my list.

I felt a cold sensation move through my stomach.

“Vanessa, when did Daniel start working for the supplier?”

“I don't know.”

“Did he ever come to your house?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before I moved in.”

That made no sense.

I asked her to explain.

She said Daniel had helped her move.

He had carried boxes.

He had installed shelves.

He had been inside her house several times.

Then she added something else.

“He knew about your bakery.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

“Why?”

“Because I was angry.”

I closed my eyes.

“When?”

“After the first time I spoke to you.”

My stomach dropped.

“What exactly did you tell him?”

“I said you were arrogant.”

“That isn't what I mean.”

She sighed.

“I told him I was going to take Irvin.”

Irvin looked at me.

“And?”

“I told him I wanted you to feel threatened.”

I sat down.

“Did you ask him to do anything?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did he offer?”

She was silent.

That silence was enough to frighten me.

“Vanessa?”

“I didn't think he was serious.”

“What did he say?”

“He said people like you only understand consequences.”

I felt my skin prickle.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't know he was involved.”

“Until when?”

“Until now.”

I ended the call.

Irvin stared at me.

“Daniel.”

I nodded.

“The former delivery driver.”

“The one who knew your business.”

“And Vanessa's former husband's brother.”

He rubbed his jaw.

“That explains the information.”

“Maybe.”

“But not the note.”

“No.”

We contacted the supplier.

Daniel had indeed worked there.

He had access to delivery schedules.

He had delivered to my house.

He knew when I baked.

He knew how many orders I typically had.

He knew the layout of my garage.

He knew enough.

But access wasn't proof.

We needed more.

The supplier told us Daniel had been dismissed after a dispute involving missing inventory.

He had been angry about it.

Then they gave us the date.

Three weeks before Vanessa moved in.

That was the first clue that didn't fit.

Why would Daniel care about me before Vanessa even moved into the neighborhood?

I asked Vanessa.

She didn't know.

Or she said she didn't.

Then Irvin remembered something.

“Did Daniel ever meet you before?”

“No.”

“Think.”

I did.

Then I remembered.

A delivery.

About eight months earlier.

A man from the supplier had delivered several boxes of specialty flour.

I hadn't known his name.

But he had stood in my garage while I checked the invoice.

He had asked about the bakery.

How long I had been operating.

Whether I had many customers.

I had answered casually.

At the time, there was nothing suspicious about it.

Now I remembered his face.

Daniel.

I felt sick.

He had known about my bakery long before Vanessa arrived.

He didn't need her to tell him.

She had simply given him another reason to interfere.

That changed everything.

We went to the property manager.

Then to the supplier.

Then, finally, to the police.

We provided the documents.

The complaints.

The messages.

The note.

The account information.

The delivery records.

Vanessa's statement.

The officer listened carefully.

He didn't promise anything.

He said they would review the evidence.

That was enough.

We went home.

For the first time in months, I felt tired rather than frightened.

That night, I sat on the porch with Irvin.

The neighborhood was quiet.

Sprinklers clicked somewhere down the street.

A dog barked once and stopped.

Irvin leaned back in his chair.

“You know what I keep thinking?”

“What?”

“How different this would have been if we'd talked sooner.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

“I should've told you every time Vanessa contacted me.”

“Yes.”

“I should've blocked her.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“You're not letting me off easily.”

“No.”

He laughed.

Then he became serious.

“But you didn't tell me how scared you were.”

I looked down.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't want to become someone who needed constant reassurance.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“I thought if I admitted I was scared, I'd give her power.”

“You didn't.”

“I know that now.”

He reached for my hand.

I took it.

We sat there quietly.

Then a car slowed near our house.

Both of us looked up.

The vehicle continued past.

I watched the taillights disappear.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Irvin said, “Maybe it's over.”

I wanted to believe him.

But the next morning, my phone rang.

It was the licensing office.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“We've received a new objection concerning your bakery approval.”

I closed my eyes.

“What kind?”

“An allegation that the documents submitted for your inspection contain false information.”

My heart sank.

“That's impossible.”

“I understand.”

“Who filed it?”

The woman hesitated.

“It's anonymous.”

I looked across the kitchen.

The note was still inside its folder.

The bakery approval had survived one challenge.

Now someone was trying another route.

I thanked her and hung up.

Irvin walked in.

He saw my face.

“What happened?”

I handed him the phone.

He read the note.

Then he looked at me.

“This is the same person.”

“I think so.”

He took a breath.

“Then we stop reacting.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

“We let the evidence speak.”

He was right.

The final inspection had already been completed.

The paperwork was legitimate.

The allegation could be disproved.

But the timing told me something else.

Whoever was behind this wasn't trying to destroy me in one move.

They were testing how many times they could make me start over.

I closed the folder.

“Then we finish this.”

Irvin nodded.

“Together.”

And this time, I believed him without needing to hear it twice.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The New Objection Looked
