11 – The Final Piece of the Puzzle Was Hidden in an Old Delivery Record, and Once We Found It, Daniel Had Nowhere Left to Hide

The police asked us not to contact Daniel.

That was difficult.

Especially because every instinct I had told me to confront him.

But I had learned something over the previous months.

Anger made people careless.

Evidence made them accountable.

So I waited.

The officer assigned to the case asked for every document we had.

He also asked the supplier to provide Daniel's employment records.

The supplier cooperated.

Daniel had worked there for almost three years.

He had access to delivery addresses.

He had access to customer order information.

He had access to invoices.

He knew which customers ordered regularly.

He knew when certain deliveries occurred.

And he had been dismissed six months before Vanessa moved into our neighborhood.

The reason for his dismissal was initially described as an inventory dispute.

But when the company reviewed the old records again, they discovered something more serious.

Several customer records had been accessed after Daniel no longer needed them.

My account was one of them.

The access dates matched the period when the first anonymous messages began.

That changed the investigation.

The officer called us in.

“There's a stronger connection now.”

I looked at the file.

“What did he access?”

“Your delivery history.”

“Why?”

“We don't know.”

Irvin leaned forward.

“Can you determine what else he accessed?”

“Yes.”

The company reviewed the records.

Daniel had accessed my account repeatedly.

He had also accessed Vanessa's delivery history.

Richard's.

And Irvin's company address.

The pattern was clear.

He had been gathering information about people connected to the neighborhood.

But one question remained.

Why?

The officer showed us a document.

It was a complaint Daniel had filed against the supplier after his dismissal.

He claimed he had been treated unfairly.

He claimed his brother had influenced the company's decision.

His brother was Richard.

That explained the resentment.

Daniel blamed Richard.

He blamed the company.

Then Vanessa moved into the neighborhood.

She became angry with me.

Daniel saw an opportunity.

He could use Vanessa's conflict to get close to Richard again.

At the same time, he could punish the people he believed had rejected or humiliated him.

The whole thing had grown from several unrelated grievances.

None of them justified what he had done.

But now the motive was visible.

The officer continued.

“There's one more thing.”

He placed a printed page on the table.

“Daniel purchased a prepaid phone two days before the first anonymous message.”

My stomach tightened.

“Can you prove he sent the messages?”

“Not yet.”

“But you're close.”

“We're working on it.”

I nodded.

Then the officer said something unexpected.

“Vanessa has been cooperative.”

I looked at Irvin.

“She provided the messages voluntarily.”

I felt something shift inside me.

Vanessa had finally made a choice that cost her pride.

That mattered.

A week passed.

The bakery reopened fully.

The first morning I unlocked the commercial kitchen, I stood outside for a moment before entering.

The air was cool.

The street was quiet.

Nothing looked different.

But I was different.

I had learned that rebuilding didn't mean returning to the person I had been before.

It meant becoming someone who knew what she would and would not tolerate.

The first large order was the wedding cake I had canceled months earlier.

I worked on it for two days.

Three tiers.

Vanilla sponge.

Raspberry filling.

White buttercream.

The bride had asked for simple decoration.

No extravagant flowers.

No elaborate patterns.

Just clean lines and a small cluster of sugar roses.

When I delivered it, she hugged me.

“You kept your promise.”

I smiled.

“I try.”

That evening, I returned home exhausted.

Irvin had cooked dinner.

The table was set.

There were candles.

Nothing elaborate.

Just dinner.

He stood when I entered.

“How was the cake?”

“Beautiful.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

We ate quietly.

Then he said, “I blocked Vanessa.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I don't want any unnecessary contact anymore.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

“I also told her that if she needs to discuss anything, she should go through you.”

I looked at him.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“I want to.”

That difference mattered.

Later that night, Vanessa sent me a message.

*I heard the bakery reopened. Congratulations.**

I stared at it.

Then replied:

*Thank you.**

She wrote back:

*I hope you know I'm genuinely happy for you.**

I believed her.

Not completely.

But enough.

Then another message arrived.

*I also wanted to tell you that Daniel asked me to leave town with him.**

My hands went cold.

I called her.

She answered.

“He asked you to leave?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you agree?”

“No.”

“Where is he now?”

“I don't know.”

I told the officer.

That night, they increased patrols around our neighborhood.

For several days, nothing happened.

Then the police found Daniel.

He was staying at a motel in another part of town.

He didn't resist.

He had the prepaid phone.

He had copies of documents.

He had photographs.

And he had a notebook.

The officer showed me only the pages relevant to our case.

Dates.

Times.

Names.

Observations.

My schedule.

Irvin's schedule.

Vanessa's movements.

Richard's meetings.

I felt sick.

He had been watching all of us.

For months.

There was one final page.

My name was written at the top.

Underneath it was a sentence.

*She will eventually leave him if she believes he chose another woman.**

I stared at it.

The officer closed the notebook.

“He appears to have intended to continue escalating.”

I swallowed.

“Why?”

“His reasons aren't important to what happens next.”

He was right.

I didn't need to understand Daniel completely.

I needed to understand what he had done.

And what we had survived.

Richard cooperated with the investigation.

He admitted that he had complained about my bakery.

He admitted Daniel had encouraged him to continue.

He said he hadn't known how far Daniel intended to take things.

That explanation didn't erase his responsibility.

But it clarified the roles.

Richard had wanted the bakery gone.

Vanessa had wanted my marriage shaken.

Daniel had taken both conflicts and turned them into something much more dangerous.

The investigation moved forward.

There were formal reports.

Statements.

Evidence.

Legal proceedings.

I didn't attend every stage.

I had a business to rebuild.

A marriage to repair.

A life to live.

Months later, Vanessa moved away.

She sold the house quietly.

Before leaving, she came to my bakery.

She stood in the doorway while I finished an order.

“I wanted to say goodbye.”

I looked at her.

“Goodbye.”

She smiled sadly.

“I know you don't owe me anything.”

“No.”

“I used to think you were lucky.”

I waited.

“Now I think you worked very hard for what you have.”

I smiled faintly.

“I did.”

She nodded.

“I hope you keep it.”

“So do I.”

She left.

I watched her walk down the sidewalk.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

That evening, Irvin and I sat on the porch.

The same porch where we had once wondered whether our marriage could survive.

He looked at me.

“Do you ever think about how this started?”

“All the time.”

“I wish I could change some things.”

“So do I.”

“Would you?”

I thought about it.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because if I changed everything, I might erase what we learned.”

He took my hand.

“Do you trust me?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Completely?”

I smiled.

“Trust isn't a light switch.”

He nodded.

“It isn't.”

“It gets rebuilt.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Then I'll keep rebuilding.”

I leaned against his shoulder.

The neighborhood was quiet.

The bakery was open.

Our marriage was still standing.

And for the first time, there was no one outside our relationship trying to tell us what it should become.

But there was still one final thing I needed to do.

I went inside.

I opened the folder containing the first note.

Then I took it to the trash.

I held it for a moment.

And dropped it in.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Finally
