The damage wasn't severe enough to prevent me from writing, but it changed how I formed certain letters.

My signature developed a tiny interruption between the O and the s in Oscar.

It had been there for decades.

Every check.

Every contract.

Every tax document.

Every retirement form.

The signature on the power of attorney had no interruption.

It flowed smoothly from beginning to end.

I looked at Beverly.

“I didn't sign this.”

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “I was afraid you were going to say that.”

She pulled another document from the printer.

“This is your most recent signature from the branch.”

She placed it beside the power of attorney.

The difference was obvious once I knew what to look for.

“Can you formally document that I dispute anything?”

“No.”

She hesitated.

“Gregory Honce is Lauren's brother.”

I wrote the name down.

Under it, I wrote $7,800.

Then I drew a line between them.

The pattern was beginning to take shape.

The money wasn't merely disappearing.

It was being routed through a company controlled by Lauren's family.

I asked Beverly to print the corporate registration.

She did.

Meridian had no obvious office address.

No employee list.

No public client information.

No indication that it operated the senior-care facility Lauren claimed I was living in.

I stared at the document.

“Beverly, how much money is still in the trust?”

She checked.

“Enough to keep the account open.”

“How much?”

“About two hundred dollars more than the last month.”

I looked at her.

Every month, $8,000 entered.

Every month, $7,800 left.

Exactly $200 remained.

That wasn't an accident.

Someone had designed the withdrawals.

The account needed to remain active so no one would notice it had been drained.

I suddenly remembered Lauren's words from the day before.

“If your condition continues to worsen, someone will need legal authority to make decisions for you.”

The money was one problem.

The power of attorney was another.

But together, they suggested something much larger.

I called an attorney that afternoon.

Her name was Patricia Okafor.

She specialized in elder financial abuse, estate disputes, and guardianship cases.

I brought her everything.

Bank statements.

Corporate records.

The power of attorney.

Copies of my genuine signatures.

My notes from the conversation with Lauren.

She read quietly for almost half an hour.

Then she looked up.

“How long has this been happening?”

“Three years.”

“And you had no idea?”

“No.”

She leaned back.

“Why did you trust Lauren with everything?”

“Because my son trusted her.”

Patricia studied me.

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the answer.”

I explained the trust.

I explained Jared's success.

I explained that I had never wanted his money and had never asked him for help.

Patricia nodded.

Then she returned to the power of attorney.

“This signature needs forensic examination.”

“I agree.”

“Before we accuse anyone, we establish the facts.”

“That's how I prefer to work.”

She smiled faintly.

“I read that in your notes.”

“You read my notes?”

“You organized the evidence by date, transaction, and source before coming here.”

“I was an auditor.”

“I noticed.”

The following day, Patricia arranged for a forensic document examiner to review the signature.

I brought dozens of old checks Diane had kept in storage.

My wife had been meticulous.

She saved everything.

We laid the checks across a conference table.

1991.

1998.

2004.

2011.

2018.

Every genuine signature showed the same tiny break.

The examiner compared them to the power of attorney.

She studied it for nearly an hour.

Then she looked at me.

“This signature was not produced naturally in the same manner as your authenticated samples.”

My chest tightened.

“Are you saying it's forged?”

“I'm saying there is substantial evidence that the signature was simulated.”

Patricia wrote something down.

“Can you testify to that?”

“If the full forensic report supports these findings, yes.”

I stared at the page.

For the first time, the suspicion became something tangible.

Lauren hadn't simply mishandled my money.

Someone had apparently signed my name.

I asked Patricia what happened next.

“We investigate the notary.”

“The notary?”

“If the power of attorney was properly executed, someone should have witnessed your signature.”

I already knew what I would say.

“I wasn't there.”

Patricia nodded.

“Then we find out who was.”

The investigator located the notary two days later.

His name was Samuel Price.

He remembered the document.

That surprised me.

He remembered Lauren bringing it into his office.

He remembered her saying I was waiting outside.

And he remembered never seeing me sign it.

Patricia asked whether he had known that he was required to witness the signature.

Samuel looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you notarize it?”

“Because she told me the gentleman was too frail to come inside.”

Patricia looked at him.

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

“Did you see Mr. Blake sign?”

“No.”

That testimony was exactly what we needed.

But it also raised a more disturbing question.

Why would Lauren need a forged power of attorney if Jared had already established the trust for me?

The answer came when Patricia obtained Meridian's financial records.

The company wasn't paying for my care.

It had almost no operating expenses.

There was no senior residence.

No caregiver payroll.

No meaningful business activity.

The company existed primarily to receive money.

My money.

Then Patricia discovered something else.

Lauren had been moving toward a second legal step.

She had begun documenting my supposed confusion.

Small incidents.

Missed appointments.

Repeated questions.

Forgetfulness.

And, most damaging of all, the Father's Day conversation.

The conversation where I had pretended not to remember Diane's death.

I felt sick.

“I gave her exactly what she needed.”

Patricia shook her head.

“No. You gave her one piece of evidence.”

“But it was convincing.”

“Only if it stands alone.”

She pushed the forensic report toward me.

“It doesn't.”

I looked at the document.

For the first time in three years, I felt something stronger than fear.

I felt prepared.

But preparation had a price.

Someone had to tell Jared.

Not yet, I thought.

Not until I knew everything.

Because if I called my son with accusations and no complete evidence, Lauren would have exactly what she wanted.

An emotional confrontation.

A confused old father.

A successful daughter-in-law calmly explaining that the old man had become paranoid.

So I waited.

And while I waited, Lauren made her next move.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Woman Who Claimed to Protect Me Had Already Prepared the Documents That
