here.”

That was all I could say.

People imagine forgiveness as a single moment.

It isn't.

Sometimes it's Tuesday.

Sometimes it's a phone call.

Sometimes it's letting someone ask a question they should have asked years earlier.

Sometimes it's eating dinner together without bringing up the person who hurt remained.

Lauren remained in prison.

Gregory remained there too.

Their names no longer appeared in my daily life.

That was a kind of freedom.

I didn't destroyed.

Later that night, after everyone left, I sat in the kitchen.

There was soup on the stove.

Real soup.

Fresh vegetables.

Chicken.

Herbs.

I poured a bowl.

Then I laughed at myself.

I had spent years associating soup with poverty.

Now I understood it was just soup.

The meaning had been mine.

I ate slowly.

The apartment was warm.

The radiator worked.

Outside, snow began falling.

I thought about the had helped me when my own family didn't know I needed help.

I still visited the church occasionally.

Not because I needed food.

Because I wanted to thank
