mother?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

He walked out.

I followed him into the hallway.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

“Please.”

He turned.

“You don't want to know.”

“I already know enough to be afraid.”

He closed his eyes.

“That is exactly what I was trying to prevent.”

The next morning, he left before sunrise.

I waited until his car disappeared.

Then I drove to the Caldwell estate.

Margaret answered the door herself.

She wasn't surprised to see me.

“You came for the records.”

“Yes.”

She stepped aside.

“Come in.”

The calmness in her voice unsettled me.

She led me into the library.

The room smelled of leather, old paper, and the faint tobacco scent that seemed permanently embedded in the walls.

She opened a cabinet and removed a thin gray file.

“This is what I can show you.”

I took it.

The first pages contained property transfers.

Kentucky.

That surprised me.

My father had lived in Illinois his entire adult life.

I turned another page.

Then another.

There were parcels of rural land, shell companies, trustees, and handwritten notes in the margins.

Most of the names meant nothing.

Then I saw his.

My father's full name.

I stopped breathing.

I ran my finger across the printed line.

There was no mistake.

“What is this?”

Margaret remained silent.

I looked up.

“Why is my father's name here?”

“He was involved with one of the original land acquisitions.”

“Doing what?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to understand that I was not involved in every decision made by my husband.”

I looked back at the document.

The date was eleven years old.

The same year my father died.

My hands began to shake.

“What happened to this land?”

“Some parcels were sold.”

“And the others?”

“Transferred.”

“To whom?”

She didn't answer.

I turned another page.

There was a handwritten notation beside one parcel.

A date.

A code.

And beneath it, a signature.

Daniel's.

My husband's signature.

I looked at Margaret.

“You said Daniel wasn't involved.”

“I said I didn't know every detail.”

“You knew enough.”

She walked toward the window.

“Your father was not simply a mechanic.”

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

I waited.

Margaret's voice dropped.

“He had information.”

“About what?”

She turned.

“About the Caldwells.”

My mouth went dry.

“What kind of information?”

“Financial.”

“That doesn't explain anything.”

“It explains why your father was afraid.”

My heart stopped for a beat.

“Afraid of whom?”

She didn't answer.

Instead, she closed the file.

“You need to leave.”

I pulled the file back.

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“Give it to me.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't understand what you're holding.”

I opened the file again.

A photograph slipped from between the pages.

It landed face-up on the carpet.

I bent down.

The picture showed my father standing beside a weathered wooden sign in rural Kentucky.

There was another man beside him.

I recognized him immediately.

Daniel.

Younger.

Much younger.

Maybe twenty-seven.

I stared at the photograph.

My father had died eleven years ago.

Daniel had told me he had never met him before our wedding.

I looked at Margaret.

“He knew my father.”

She said nothing.

“Daniel knew my father.”

Her silence was confirmation.

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

One sentence.

A date.

And three initials.

My father's initials.

I read them twice.

Then I saw something else.

A small notation underneath.

*Do not tell her.**

My fingers went cold.

“Who wrote this?”

Margaret's face had lost its composure.

“I don't know.”

But she did.

And for the first time since I had entered that house, I realized she was frightened too.

<a
