first.

Everything looked normal.

Then I checked my credit.

There were several recent inquiries.

I hadn't authorized them.

I wrote down every date.

Then I searched state business records for Chase's company.

Sterling Auto Consulting LLC.

The registration showed a business that had been struggling.

Late filings.

Changes in registered information.

Debt-related notices.

Nothing conclusive.

Then I found a commercial financing record.

I read it once.

Then again.

The address attached to the application was mine.

My house.

I sat completely still.

The loan application had been submitted nineteen days earlier.

Chase had listed my property as his residential address.

I opened the attached verification information.

His company was seeking a large commercial loan.

The lender wanted evidence of stable residential arrangements.

There was my address.

There was my name.

But I had never signed anything.

My hands became cold.

I printed the documents.

Then I checked my mail records.

Three pieces of certified correspondence had arrived while I was offshore.

All had been signed for.

The recipient name was Evelyn Vance.

My mother.

I stared at that name.

Mom had received financial correspondence connected to my house while I was away.

She had never mentioned it.

I called the postal service and confirmed the delivery information.

Then I called my bank.

No unauthorized withdrawal.

No new mortgage.

No lien.

Nothing had transferred.

Yet someone had tried to establish my house as Chase's residence.

The nursery suddenly made sense.

It wasn't only about having more space.

They needed my address.

My property made Chase's financial position look more stable.

I pulled up his company filings.

The numbers were ugly.

Outstanding obligations.

Late payments.

Declining revenue.

A commercial lease problem.

Then I found something else.

His apartment had a delinquency notice.

I leaned back.

The expensive watch.

The luxury car.

The apartment.

The polished conversations about expansion.

It was all sitting on top of debt.

And my house had been quietly placed into the picture.

I called an attorney.

Not Mom.

Not something inside me shift.

For years, Mom had possessed keys to my home simply because she was Mom.

I had never questioned it.

Now I did.

Victor packed his equipment.

“Anything else?”

“Can you make sure the garage can't be opened with the old remote?”

He nodded.

When he left, I stood alone in my kitchen.

The house was quiet.

For the first time since returning from sea, I felt as though the walls belonged to me again.

Then my phone vibrated.

A security notification.

Motion detected.

Front driveway.

I opened the camera.

A rented moving truck was turning through my gate.

Harper climbed out first.

Chase followed.

The truck was full.

Furniture.

Boxes.

Baby supplies.

They hadn't come to collect what they left behind.

They
