7 – Harper Gave Up the House, but the Missing Signature Raised a New Question Neither of Us Was Ready to Answer

We stayed at the café for another hour.

Harper told me what had happened after the baby shower.

She and Chase had argued.

He had insisted the financing problem was temporary.

Then he had admitted that several creditors were already demanding payment.

Harper had asked why he had never told her.

He said he had been trying to protect her.

She told him protection without honesty was another form of control.

That sentence surprised me.

It sounded like something she had finally learned for herself.

She had moved into Mom and Dad's house temporarily.

The baby was due in several months.

She had started looking for work she could do remotely.

She had also opened a separate bank account.

I didn't ask whether she intended to leave Chase.

That was her decision.

I wasn't going to become another person deciding what her life should look like.

When we finished coffee, she reached into her bag.

“I brought something.”

She placed a folded document on the table.

“What is it?”

“Chase's copy of the financing agreement.”

I looked at the first page.

There was my address.

Again.

But this time, something was different.

The property information listed my name correctly.

The residential address was mine.

The signature section was blank.

I looked at Harper.

“What am I supposed to see?”

“Turn the page.”

I did.

A separate certification appeared.

The borrower certified that the property owner had consented to the use of the address.

There was a signature.

But it wasn't mine.

I stared at it.

The signature looked similar to mine.

Not identical.

Similar enough that someone unfamiliar with my handwriting might believe it.

I photographed the page.

Harper whispered, “I didn't know this existed.”

“Where did you get it?”

“Chase's computer bag.”

I looked up.

“Does he know you have it?”

“I don't think so.”

“Do not give it to anyone except your attorney.”

“I already told mine.”

“Good.”

She looked frightened.

“Could this be why he left?”

“Maybe.”

I didn't speculate further.

There was enough uncertainty already.

We left separately.

My attorney received the document that afternoon.

Her response came quickly.

“This is significant.”

“What does it mean?”

“The signature needs to be examined.”

“Can someone prove it isn't mine?”

“A forensic document examiner may be able to determine whether it was simulated.”

I authorized the examination.

The process took several days.

During that time, I heard nothing from Chase.

No call.

No message.

No explanation.

Then the investigator contacted me.

He wanted to ask about my handwriting.

He showed me several documents I had signed over the years.

Mortgage paperwork.

Insurance forms.

Property records.

My signature was consistent.

The signature on Chase's document wasn't.

It copied the shape of my name but not the movement.

The investigator explained the difference carefully.

A person familiar with a signature could imitate its appearance.

But natural signatures contained patterns that were difficult to reproduce.

Pressure.

Speed.

Spacing.

Stroke direction.

The examination was not yet final.

But the preliminary findings were concerning.

I called Harper.

She answered immediately.

“Did they find something?”

“They're examining it.”

“I'm scared.”

“I know.”

“I didn't sign anything.”

“I know.”

“I swear.”

“I believe you.”

She was quiet.

Then she said, “I think Chase may have done something worse than I knew.”

I didn't respond.

We couldn't know yet.

The next day, Mom called.

“Have you heard from Chase?”

“No.”

“Neither have we.”

“What about his attorney?”

“I don't know.”

“Mom, did Chase ever ask you to sign anything?”

Silence.

“What?”

“Mom?”

“I signed something.”

My chest tightened.

“What did you sign?”

“I don't remember.”

“You need to find out.”

“I think it was a verification.”

“Of what?”

“I don't know.”

“Look for it.”

She promised she would.

Two hours later, she called back.

“I found a copy.”

My attorney arranged to receive it.

The document was a notarized statement.

Mom had signed as a witness.

The statement claimed that I had given verbal permission for Chase to use my property address.

I stared at the page.

Mom had not forged my signature.

She had done something else.

She had provided a false statement.

I called her.

“Did you know this wasn't true?”

She cried.

“I thought you would agree.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“Yes.”

The word was barely audible.

“Yes, I knew.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

“I thought the loan would save them.”

“It wasn't your decision.”

“I know.”

“No, Mom. You don't.”

She became silent.

“You kept deciding what I would agree to.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I am sorry.”

I believed that she was sorry.

That didn't erase what happened.

The next week became a blur of meetings.

The lender.

The investigator.

My attorney.

Harper's attorney.

Questions.

Documents.

Dates.

Names.

I answered every question precisely.

I did not exaggerate.

I did not speculate.

I did not accuse anyone of something I couldn't prove.

The facts were enough.

Eventually, the forensic examiner completed the report.

The signature on the financing document was not consistent with my natural signature.

The report could not identify who had written it.

But it supported my statement that I had not signed the document.

That was enough for the lender to remove me from the financing inquiry.

The relief was enormous.

But there was still one unresolved issue.

Where was Chase?

Then, late Friday afternoon, Dad called.

“He contacted me.”

“Where is he?”

“He's in another state.”

“Why?”

“He says he's trying to sell some equipment.”

“Did he say when he's coming back?”

“No.”

Dad paused.

“He asked me to tell you something.”

I waited.

“He says you ruined his business.”

I felt no satisfaction.

No anger.

Just exhaustion.

“What else?”

“He says if you had let them stay, none of this would have happened.”

I looked toward the guest room.

The room was finished.

Clean.

Quiet.

Mine.

“Dad, that's not true.”

“I know.”

“He made his decisions.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you tell me?”

“Because I don't want you to carry guilt that belongs to him.”

I appreciated that.

Then Dad said something else.

“He also said he has one last document.”

My stomach tightened.

“What document?”

“He wouldn't tell me.”

I stood.

“Did he say where it was?”

“No.”

“Did he say what it concerned?”

“He said it would prove he wasn't the one who started this.”

I stared at the wall.

That sentence changed the shape of everything.

If Chase wasn't the person who initiated the use of my property, who was?

I thought about Mom's list.

The appraisal.

The mail.

The nursery.

The financing.

Then I remembered something.

The first time I saw the baby supplies, the box had been labeled Baby Sterling.

Not Harper.

Not Chase.

Sterling.

The same name as the company.

At the time, I had assumed it was simply the family name.

Now I wondered.

Why had the nursery been prepared before I even returned?

Who had arranged the furniture?

Who had ordered the paint?

Who had told Chase the room was available?

I called Harper.

“Where did the nursery furniture come from?”

She paused.

“Mom ordered most of it.”

“When?”

“I don't remember.”

“Try.”

She thought.

“Before you came home.”

“How long before?”

“Maybe three weeks.”

My pulse quickened.

“Who paid for it?”

“I thought Chase did.”

“I'll ask Mom.”

I ended the call.

Then I opened the financial records she had given me.

One receipt caught my attention.

A nursery furniture store.

Payment date.

Six weeks before my return.

Payment method.

Mom's account.

The furniture had been purchased before Chase submitted the financing application.

Before the loan request.

Before the moving truck.

The plan had started earlier than anyone had admitted.

I turned the receipt over.

On the back, in Mom's handwriting, was a note.

Ask Naomi after deployment.

I stared at it.

Not before.

After.

They had planned around my return.

They had expected me to come home tired.

They had expected me to be confronted with a finished nursery.

They had expected family pressure to make saying no difficult.

But now I had another question.

If Mom had organized the nursery before Chase's financing application, who had first suggested using my house?

That question remained unanswered.

Until Monday morning.

A certified letter arrived.

The sender was Chase's attorney.

Inside was a single page.

A statement.

And one sentence underlined in black ink.

I did not choose Naomi's property. I was told it was already approved.

I read it twice.

Then I called my attorney.

Because suddenly the person who had been directing this was no longer as obvious as I had believed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Chase’s Letter Changed the Story Again, and the Person Who Claimed to Be Protecting Me Had One Last Secret

We stayed at the café for another hour.
