message came through his attorney.

He wanted one final conversation.

My first reaction was no.

Then I thought about how much remained unresolved.

Not legally.

Emotionally.

I agreed to meet him in a public office with my attorney present.

He arrived alone.

He looked older than I remembered.

His expensive watch was gone.

So was the confidence he used to carry into every room.

He sat across from me.

“I know you don't want to see me.”

“That is true.”

He nodded.

“I owe you an explanation.”

“You owe me several.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

“I lied to swallowed.

“But there was something I didn't tell anyone.”

I waited.

“The business was already failing before I asked about your house.”

I wasn't surprised.

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that I knew I couldn't save it with one loan.”

“Then why pursue it?”

“Because I thought one loan would buy me time.”

“You knew it wouldn't solve the problem.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

He looked at his hands.

“Because I was afraid of losing everything.”

“That explains fear.”

“It doesn't excuse what I it?”

“She said you would probably help.”

“She didn't ask me.”

“I know.”

“Did you ask her to forge anything?”

His face changed.

“I asked her whether there was a way to document your consent.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

He took a breath.

“I asked her to help me get something signed.”

“And when she couldn't?”

“She move into my house?”

He looked at me.

“The lender would have believed the address was legitimate.”

“And then?”

“I could have received the financing.”

“How much?”

He named the amount.

It was large enough to change everything.

Not enough to solve the company permanently.

But enough to delay the collapse.

I understood then why the moving truck had mattered.

They weren't simply seeking housing.

They were trying to establish a reality that did back.

The anger I expected never came.

Only disappointment.

He looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

“I believe you.”

He seemed it.”

“Harper knows?”

“Yes.”

“And the debts?”

“I'll handle them.”

“That is your responsibility.”

“I know.”

He stood.

Then he stopped.

“There is one thing I want you to know.”

I waited.

“I
