My breath wasn't quite visible, but the temperature inside was low enough that my fingers immediately noticed the difference.

Mom was wearing her winter coat over the same birthday dress from two nights earlier.

Brooke was wearing a cream-colored blazer over thermal clothing and open-toed shoes.

Kyle stood near the kitchen holding a propane cylinder.

He looked at me with the exhausted expression of a man who had been forced to choose between marriage and basic chemistry.

"Thank God."

"Where are the patio heaters?"

"Living room."

I walked in.

Two tall stainless-steel heaters stood beside the sofa.

I stared at them.

"Brooke."

She appeared from the hallway.

"Before you say anything—"

"Turn them off."

"But—"

"Now."

She hesitated.

Kyle stepped forward and shut one off.

Brooke turned on the other.

"I need the room warm."

"You need the room ventilated."

"I know what I'm doing."

"No, you don't."

Her face tightened.

"This is important."

"So is breathing."

Mom stepped between us.

"Please."

I looked at her.

"Mom, those cannot be running inside."

She nodded.

Brooke finally switched the second heater off.

Kyle carried the cylinders outside.

I unplugged several of the electric heaters.

"How many are running?"

"Six," Mom admitted.

"At the same time?"

"Yes."

I looked toward the electrical panel.

"And you've got warming trays?"

"Three."

I laughed once.

Nobody else did.

"You've replaced a dead furnace with a small industrial experiment."

Brooke folded her arms.

"Declan is coming."

"Then Declan is going to discover that your family understands the concept of hypothermia."

"He'll be here at four."

I looked at the clock.

3:16.

The doorbell rang.

Brooke froze.

"He's early."

She rushed toward the entrance.

Mom tried to remove her coat.

Kyle grabbed her sleeve.

"Keep it on."

She glared at him.

"I don't want to look ridiculous."

"You are shivering."

"I am fine."

"You are visibly vibrating."

Brooke opened the door.

A man in a thick black winter jacket stood outside.

He looked past her shoulder.

"Wow."

Brooke smiled.

"Welcome."

He stepped inside.

His breath briefly fogged the air.

"Is your heat broken?"

Brooke's smile didn't move.

"We prefer a naturally regulated environment."

The man looked at the frozen windows.

Then at the space heaters.

Then at Mom.

"Right."

I stayed near the hallway.

The man noticed the birthday card Lucy had made.

He picked it up.

"Who's Lucy?"

"My granddaughter," Mom said.

"She's not here?"

Brooke answered too quickly.

"No."

I said, "She was asked not to come."

The man looked at me.

Brooke shot me a warning glance.

He didn't seem impressed by it.

"Why?"

I told him.

Not dramatically.

Not with embellishment.

Just the truth.

"My sister decided my children should wait in my truck during Mom's birthday dinner because her twins didn't want them inside."

He stared at Brooke.

"Seriously?"

Brooke immediately stepped forward.

"There were complicated interpersonal boundaries."

"At thirty degrees?"

She didn't answer.

The man's expression changed.

He looked uncomfortable.

I recognized him then.

Declan Vale.

The man Brooke had spent months talking about as though he were a personal connection.

He shook my hand.

"What do you do?"

I told him.

He became interested.

Not in the title.

In the work.

He asked about rope access.

I explained.

He asked about heights.

I answered.

He asked what could go wrong.

I told him.

Brooke stood beside us, becoming increasingly impatient.

Finally she interrupted.

"I actually invited Declan here because I have a business concept."

Declan smiled politely.

"Let's hear it."

She straightened.

Her voice changed.

She began talking about luxury storytelling, premium audiences, cultural positioning, and exclusive experiences.

Declan listened.

I watched Kyle slowly retreat toward the kitchen.

My sister kept going.

She mentioned her network.

She mentioned Monica.

She mentioned Lady Gaga.

Declan stopped her.

"Your sister-in-law works with Lady Gaga?"

Brooke nodded.

"Yes."

"What does she do?"

"Celebrity makeup."

"How many projects have they worked together?"

Brooke hesitated.

"Several."

I knew that wasn't true.

Declan waited.

She changed her answer.

"One major event."

I said nothing.

Declan looked at me.

I gave him the smallest shrug.

He understood.

He didn't press her further.

But the room had changed.

The fantasy had become visible.

Then the lights went out.

Every heater stopped.

The house dropped into darkness.

Mom screamed.

Cartier began barking from his stroller.

Kyle shouted from the kitchen.

"I didn't touch anything!"

I turned on my phone flashlight.

"Main breaker."

I walked to the electrical panel.

Six heaters had been running together with the warming trays.

The system had overloaded.

I reset the breaker after shutting down several circuits.

The lights returned.

Brooke stared at me.

"Can you fix it?"

"The furnace?"

"Yes."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the technician already diagnosed the failed control board."

"But you work with electrical systems."

"Industrial ones."

"What's the difference?"

"The difference is that I don't pretend expertise is interchangeable."

Declan laughed quietly.

Brooke turned toward him.

"I know this looks chaotic."

"It does."

"But I can explain."

"I believe you."

She brightened.

"I knew you'd understand."

"I didn't say that."

Her smile faded.

Declan took a breath.

"Brooke, you're clearly ambitious."

"Thank you."

"But I don't think I'm the right person for what you're trying to build."

She blinked.

"What do you mean?"

"I'm not hiring."

"I wasn't asking you to hire me."

"I know."

"I was proposing a partnership."

"I know."

She stared at him.

He continued gently.

"I think you're trying to jump several steps."

Her face reddened.

"I've been working on this for years."

"I believe you."

"Then why won't you take me seriously?"

Declan looked at her for a long moment.

"Because you're trying very hard to appear established."

The words landed harder than any insult I could have given her.

Brooke's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Declan turned toward me.

"What you do sounds interesting."

Brooke looked at me.

Her expression changed from anger to disbelief.

"Of course."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Of course he'd like you."

I didn't answer.

"You didn't even try."

"Try what?"

"To impress him."

"I was answering questions."

"Exactly."

Her voice cracked.

"You don't understand how much I needed this."

For the first time that day, I didn't make a joke.

"I understand that you wanted something to work."

She looked away.

"I just wanted one thing."

Mom approached her.

"Brooke."

My sister shook her head.

"No."

She wiped beneath one eye.

"I can't do this."

She sat down.

The room became quiet.

The ridiculousness had disappeared.

She wasn't performing anymore.

She was simply a forty-one-year-old woman who had spent years trying to avoid admitting she didn't know what she was doing.

I sat across from her.

"Then stop pretending."

She looked at me.

"That's easy for you to say."

"No."

I shook my head.

"It's not."

She waited.

"I spent years being the guy everyone called when something broke. I thought being needed meant being valuable."

She looked down.

"It doesn't?"

"It can."

I paused.

"But if people only value what you do for them, you start confusing usefulness with love."

Mom lowered her eyes.

My sister's face softened.

"I don't know how to start over," she whispered.

"You don't have to start over."

She looked at me.

"You have to start."

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When the Furnace Finally Failed Completely, I Stopped Being the Family’s Emergency System and Let Everyone Face the Consequences

The house was colder than I expected.
