today.”

I opened the clasp.

The lid lifted slowly.

For one second, I didn't understand what I was seeing.

Then I saw the rabbit.

My breath stopped.

Mr. Bunny.

The room disappeared.

I knew every damaged inch of him.

The worn patch beneath his chin.

The crooked seam near his left ear.

The faded green mark on one paw.

My daughter had drawn that mark there herself.

I reached into the box with shaking fingers.

“No.”

Lily stared at me.

“Mom?”

I lifted the rabbit.

His fur had faded with age, but I knew him.

I knew him the way a mother knows the face of her child after years apart.

“Where did your father get this?”

“I don't know.”

“Lily, where?”

“Dad put it there.”

I pressed the rabbit against my chest.

A sound escaped me.

It wasn't quite a sob.

It wasn't quite a scream.

Lily stepped backward.

“Did I do something wrong?”

I immediately lowered the rabbit.

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“I didn't open it.”

“You didn't do anything.”

“Then why are you crying?”

I wiped my face.

“Because this belonged to my daughter.”

Lily's expression changed.

“Josie?”

I nodded.

She had heard me talk about Josie.

She knew the name.

But she had never seen Mr. Bunny.

I looked back into the box.

There was an envelope underneath him.

My name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Daniel's handwriting.

My hands began shaking harder.

Lily stood beside me.

“Should I go?”

“No.”

I swallowed.

“Stay.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The first sentence made my stomach drop.

He wrote that he had been at the accident.

I read it again.

Then again.

The words blurred.

Daniel had been driving nearby that day.

He had stopped when he saw the wreck.

He had called emergency services.

Then he had gone toward the damaged car.

My husband was already beyond help.

But Josie was alive.

Barely.

I stopped reading.

The kitchen became unbearably bright.

I looked at Lily.

“Your father found her.”

Lily didn't understand.

I returned to the letter.

Daniel wrote that Josie had been frightened.

She had been holding Mr. Bunny.

She had asked him whether her mother was coming.

He had told her help was on the way.

Then she had given him the rabbit.

She had asked him to take it home to me.

My vision blurred completely.

I lowered the page.

For years, I had wondered where that rabbit went.

It had been in Daniel's hands.

All those years.

I read the next part.

Daniel wrote that he had gone to the funeral intending to return it.

But when he saw me standing beside the caskets, he couldn't move.

He had watched me grieving.

He had held the rabbit inside his coat.

Then he had left.

He told himself he would find the right moment.

There was never a right moment.

Then, years later, I walked into Room 412.

He didn't recognize me immediately.

Not until I mentioned my husband.

Not until I told him about Josie.

Not until I described Mr. Bunny.

That was when he knew.

I put the letter down.

My whole body felt cold.

Daniel had known.

He had known who I was.

He had known what I had lost.

And he had still asked me to marry him.

I picked up the letter again.

He wrote that he had wanted to tell me.

Several times.

But every time he imagined the truth, he imagined destroying whatever trust had begun growing between us.

He wrote that he was afraid I would see him only as the man who had kept my daughter's final gift from me.

I whispered, “You were.”

Lily looked at me.

“What?”

I shook my head.

The letter continued.

Daniel said his illness had left him frightened and selfish.

He had convinced himself that he would tell me once everything was settled.

Then once we were married.

Then once I had bonded more deeply with Lily.

Then when the timing felt right.

The timing never came.

So he hid the box.

And he asked Lily to wait one year after his death.

One year.

Not one week.

Not one month.

A year.

Long enough for Lily and me to become a family without the secret hanging between us.

I read the final lines.

Daniel apologized.

He said he had failed a promise made to a dying little girl.

He said he knew there was no excuse.

I lowered the letter.

For the first time since his death, I was angry with him.

Not sad.

Not helpless.

Angry.

“You knew.”

Lily watched me carefully.

“You're mad at Dad?”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

I immediately regretted the sharpness in my voice.

“I mean… I'm hurt.”

She nodded.

“He said you might be.”

I looked at her.

“What else did he say?”

She hesitated.

“He said you might think he chose you because you were lonely.”

My chest tightened.

“He knew I thought that?”

“I think so.”

I stared at the rabbit.

Daniel had seen the emptiness in my life.

Maybe he had thought he could use it.

Maybe he had thought I needed Lily as much as Lily needed me.

The thought hurt.

But then Lily said something that stopped me.

“Dad didn't choose you.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She moved closer.

“He asked me about you.”

“When?”

“Before he asked you to marry him.”

I waited.

Lily sat in the chair opposite me.

“He asked if I liked having you around.”

“What did you say?”

“I said yes.”

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“Because you remembered things.”

“What things?”

“My favorite crackers.”

I smiled through my tears.

“What else?”

“You knew I hated having my hair pulled.”

“That was important.”

She nodded seriously.

“And you stayed when Dad was sleeping.”

I looked away.

Lily continued.

“I asked Dad if this was what having a mom felt like.”

My throat tightened.

“What did he say?”

“He asked what I thought.”

“And?”

“I told him I wanted you to keep coming.”

The kitchen became silent.

Then Lily reached across the table.

“I told Dad I wanted you.”

I couldn't speak.

She squeezed my fingers.

“He said he wanted you too.”

I closed my eyes.

For months, I had believed Daniel had chosen me.

Now I understood that the truth was more complicated.

He had made the proposal.

He had asked me to become Lily's guardian.

He had hidden a terrible secret.

But before any of that, Lily had already begun choosing me in the quiet, ordinary way children choose the people they trust.

A braid.

A spelling list.

A granola bar.

A promise to come tomorrow.

Maybe that was why Daniel had trusted me with her.

Not because I was broken.

Not because I had lost a daughter.

Because Lily had already decided I belonged.

I opened my eyes.

Mr. Bunny was still in my lap.

I touched the crooked stitch on his ear.

Josie had made me sew it years ago.

Now, after all that time, he was home.

But the story Daniel had left behind was not finished.

I still had questions.

Why had he waited so long?

Why had he been so certain that Lily would choose me?

And what exactly had he seen that day at the accident that he had never written down?

I looked at the letter again.

There was one final line at the bottom.

It wasn't an apology.

It was a sentence about Lily.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the little girl sitting across from me.

For the first time, I realized Daniel's greatest secret might never have been the rabbit.

It might have been the reason he was so certain Lily and I would become family.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Last Sentence in Daniel’s Letter Explained Why He Trusted
