person.

In paperwork.

My husband had kept a folder in his office labeled with the name of a company I never paid much attention to.

I had once asked what it was.

He wasn't ready to explain.

Not yet.

She reached for the photograph.

I stopped her.

“Don't.”

She looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I need to understand something first.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

That was when I realized thought.

“Once.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Before Dad died.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“What did he look like?”

She frowned.

“He was tall.”

“Anything else?”

“He wore a brown coat.”

I remembered the photograph.

The man in the background wore a dark jacket.

Not brown.

But the image was old.

“Did he speak to your tightened.

“Why?”

“He said the man wasn't there to visit.”

I stood.

“Lily, why didn't you tell me?”

“Dad said expected this.

He had prepared Lily to answer questions I didn't even know I would ask.

That frightened me more than anything.

I called Evelyn.

She answered on the second ring.

“I knew you'd call.”

“I found the photograph.”

“I thought you might.”

“The man in it.”

“Yes.”

“I know him.”

There was silence.

“From where?”

“My husband's business records.”

Evelyn exhaled.

“That changes things.”

“What was Daniel investigating?”

“I can't tell you everything.”

“You can.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I promised Daniel.”

“He's dead.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me.”

She was silent again.

Finally, she said, “Daniel believed your husband had discovered something before the accident.”

“What?”

“A financial scheme.”

“What kind?”

“I don't know the details.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel never trusted me with the details.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“What did he trust you with?”

“The names.”

“Which names?”

She gave me one.

It was the same company from my husband's old files.

Then she gave me another.

A lawyer.

Then a third.

An insurance executive.

I wrote them down.

“Why would they want my husband dead?”

“I don't know if they did.”

“But you said Daniel believed the accident wasn't random.”

“He did.”

“Belief isn't proof.”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“But Daniel spent years trying to find proof.”

I ended the call.

I knew what I had to do.

I went into the attic.

My husband's old boxes were still there.

I had avoided them for years.

Dust covered the lids.

I found the business records after nearly an hour.

Inside one box was a folder with the company name.

The documents were old.

Invoices.

Contracts.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Then I found something that made my hands go cold.

A copy of an insurance policy.

My husband had increased the policy shortly before the accident.

I sat on the floor.

The amount was enormous.

I had never known.

There was another document beneath it.

A letter from a lawyer.

The wording was cautious.

It mentioned a dispute over ownership.

Then came a handwritten note.

My husband's handwriting.

“I know what they are doing.”

I stared at it.

He had written another sentence underneath.

“If anything happens to me, don't trust the first explanation.”

I dropped the paper.

For years, I had believed my husband had died in an accident.

Now I was discovering he might have expected something to happen.

I called Evelyn again.

She answered immediately.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“My husband knew.”

She went quiet.

“He knew there was danger.”

“Yes.”

“I need to know everything Daniel found.”

“I'll come to you.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

An hour later, Evelyn arrived.

She carried a small leather bag.

“I should have brought this sooner.”

“What is it?”

“Daniel's.”

She placed it on the table.

Inside were copies of documents.

Photographs.

Notes.

A key.

And a flash drive.

I stared at it.

“What is on that?”

“Daniel never told me.”

“Then why do you have it?”

“He asked me to keep it.”

I picked it up.

My hands were shaking.

“We need a computer.”

“I know.”

Lily came into the kitchen.

“What are you doing?”

I turned.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Who is she?”

“Someone who knew your dad.”

Lily studied her.

Then she asked, “Did Dad tell you about me?”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That you were brave.”

Lily looked down.

“I don't feel brave.”

Evelyn knelt beside her.

“You don't have to.”

That evening, after Lily went upstairs, Evelyn and I opened the flash drive.

There were dozens of files.

Scanned documents.

Audio recordings.

Photographs.

A folder labeled with a date.

The date of the accident.

I clicked it.

There was one audio file.

Daniel's voice came through the speakers.

He sounded younger.

Healthy.

Angry.

“If you're hearing this, I wasn't able to finish.”

I looked at Evelyn.

Daniel continued.

“I found the man.”

My heart stopped.

“He knows about Lily.”

The recording crackled.

“He knows who her mother is.”

I leaned closer.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“Lily is not the child everyone thinks she is.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

But I did know one thing.

Daniel had not been investigating only my husband's death.

He had been investigating Lily.

And whatever he had discovered about her had been important enough to make him afraid.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Lily.

I stood.

Before I could reach the stairs, the lights went out.

The house fell completely dark.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Evelyn grabbed my arm.

Neither of us moved.

Another knock came.

Then a man's voice spoke from outside.

“Open the door.”

I knew that voice.

I had heard it once before.

On the night of my husband's funeral.

<a
