His father had left instructions that the property was never to be sold.

Evan had always assumed sentiment was the reason.

Now he understood.

Marcus parked near the rear entrance.

Darla stayed in the vehicle.

“My grandson is being taken somewhere safe,” she said.

Evan nodded.

“You should stay with him.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“But if you go down there and don't come back, I want you to know something.”

Evan waited.

“You gave my family a second chance.”

“You gave me information when you could have stayed silent.”

She smiled faintly.

“Then I suppose we're even.”

Evan entered the house.

Marcus followed.

The interior smelled of old wood and furniture polish.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

Evan walked toward the study.

His father's desk was still there.

He stopped beside it.

The brass key was in his hand.

“Where is the entrance?” Marcus asked.

Evan looked at the fireplace.

“My father never showed me.”

“Then how do you know there is one?”

“He told me there was.”

Evan examined the stonework.

Nothing.

He pressed the edge of the mantel.

A mechanism clicked.

Part of the wall shifted.

A narrow staircase appeared.

Marcus stared.

“Your father built this?”

“Yes.”

They descended.

The air grew colder.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Evan inserted the brass key.

It turned.

The door opened.

The room beyond was smaller than Evan expected.

There were no piles of money.

No weapons.

No secret computers.

Only shelves.

Boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

And a single wooden table.

On it sat a tape recorder.

Evan approached slowly.

Beside it was an envelope.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it.

Evan,

If you are reading this, I failed to protect you from the truth.

He continued.

Your uncle Samuel is alive.

Evan closed his eyes.

Marcus remained silent.

The letter explained that Samuel had never wanted Evan dead.

He had wanted the network destroyed.

But he had refused to trust Evan's father after discovering that several of the family's business partners had been using the company to conceal criminal activity.

Samuel had attempted to expose them.

His father had initially tried to stop him.

Then he changed sides.

Together, the brothers began collecting evidence.

That was the ledger.

But they realized the ledger alone was dangerous because it contained financial records that could be manipulated or dismissed.

So Samuel created a second archive.

Names.

Photographs.

Recorded conversations.

Copies of original agreements.

Evidence that could survive even if the financial records disappeared.

Evan looked at Marcus.

“The second record.”

Marcus nodded.

His father's letter continued.

I hid the second archive because Samuel believed too many people inside the company were compromised.

If I die, do not trust the board.

Do not trust the men who offer protection.

Trust the evidence.

Evan turned the page.

The final paragraph was shorter.

Samuel will come for you when he believes you are ready.

Evan stared at the sentence.

Marcus whispered, “He knew.”

Evan looked at him.

“He knew Samuel would come?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he never tell me?”

“Because he wanted you to become independent of him.”

Evan looked around the room.

Boxes lined the walls.

He opened the nearest one.

Inside were photographs.

Some showed his father.

Some showed Samuel.

Others showed men Evan recognized from old company records.

Then he found something unexpected.

A photograph of himself as a child.

Taken outside the estate.

Samuel stood in the distance.

Evan froze.

“He was watching me.”

Marcus nodded.

“Protecting you.”

Evan looked at the photograph again.

Another image showed Samuel standing outside Evan's school.

Another showed him near the family home.

He had been there.

For years.

Never approaching.

Never speaking.

Just watching.

Evan's throat tightened.

“My father made me believe he was dead.”

“To keep you safe.”

Evan opened another box.

Inside were dozens of letters.

Some were addressed to his father.

Some to Samuel.

One was addressed to Evan.

He opened it.

You will hate me when you learn the truth.

But hatred is easier to survive than grief.

Evan sat down.

For twelve years, he had believed his father's death had been the end of the story.

It wasn't.

It had been the moment the story passed to him.

A sound came from the hallway.

Marcus immediately turned.

Someone was above them.

Evan stood.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came through the open stairwell.

“You finally came.”

Evan froze.

He knew the voice.

Not from a recording.

From memory.

His father had once played an old family video during Evan's childhood.

There had been laughter.

A man's voice behind the camera.

Samuel.

Evan stepped toward the stairs.

Marcus raised his hand.

“Wait.”

A figure appeared.

Older than the photograph.

Silver hair.

Weathered face.

A scar along one cheek.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Samuel Cole.

Evan stared at him.

“You're alive.”

Samuel gave a tired smile.

“You already knew.”

“No.”

“You suspected.”

“I didn't.”

Samuel looked toward the boxes.

“Your father left you the truth.”

“He left me lies too.”

Samuel's expression tightened.

“He thought he was protecting you.”

“He should have trusted me.”

“Yes.”

That answer surprised Evan.

Samuel descended the final steps.

Marcus stepped between them.

Samuel stopped.

“You still protect him.”

Marcus lowered his hand.

“I made a promise.”

Samuel nodded.

Then he looked at Evan.

“Your father was afraid.”

“Of you?”

“Of what would happen if you knew everything.”

Evan stepped closer.

“You used Victor.”

“I used everyone who could help me reach the ledger.”

“You threatened a child.”

Samuel's face hardened.

“I never ordered that.”

“Victor did.”

“Victor acted beyond my instructions.”

“Then why did he say you wanted the ledger?”

“Because he knew I did.”

Samuel looked toward Darla through the doorway above.

“She was never supposed to be harmed.”

Evan's voice remained cold.

“But she was.”

“Yes.”

“That makes you responsible.”

Samuel accepted the accusation.

“I know.”

Silence filled the room.

Finally Evan asked the question that mattered.

“Why did you come for me?”

Samuel looked at him.

“Because the people who destroyed your father's life are still connected to your company.”

“Who?”

“Some are dead.”

“And the others?”

Samuel pointed toward the boxes.

“They're in there.”

Evan looked down.

Samuel continued.

“But there is one name you need to see before you decide what to do next.”

Evan opened the final box.

Inside was a corporate file.

The name on the front made his blood run cold.

Daniel Mercer.

Evan stared at it.

“Daniel?”

Samuel nodded.

“He didn't tell you everything.”

Evan looked toward Marcus.

Marcus's face had gone pale.

“What did Daniel do?”

Samuel answered quietly.

“He didn't merely steal your credentials.”

Evan's eyes narrowed.

“What then?”

Samuel looked directly at him.

“He helped arrange your father's death.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Daniel’s
