So I went to the county records office instead.

The clerk searched the address.

Then she looked at me.

“Are you sure that's the property?”

“Yes.”

She turned the monitor slightly.

The ownership history appeared on the screen.

I read the first entry.

My father's name.

Then the next.

A holding company.

Then another entity.

I frowned.

“What's this?”

The clerk pointed at the record.

“Transfer.”

“From my father?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

She gave me the date.

My father's death.

Exactly six years earlier.

I stared at the screen.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“Why?”

“Because the property was supposed to transfer to me.”

She looked at me.

“Were you named in the will?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should speak with the estate attorney.”

“I've been trying.”

She printed the record.

I folded it and put it in my pocket.

There was one more thing I wanted.

The original deed.

The clerk disappeared into another room and returned with a certified copy.

The legal owner was not my mother.

Not my father.

Not the family.

A corporation.

MERIDIAN HOLDINGS LLC.

I knew the name.

My father had mentioned it once.

He told me it was “a protective structure.”

At the time, I didn't know what that meant.

Now I did.

At least partly.

I returned to the lake house before noon.

Evelyn's car was gone.

Claire's was still there.

I found her on the dock.

She was sitting at the edge with her shoes beside her.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The lake was almost perfectly still.

“Do you remember when Dad taught us to fish?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“He always said you had more patience.”

I sat beside her.

“You were terrible at fishing.”

“I was six.”

“You threw the line into a tree.”

She laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh I had heard from her since I returned.

Then it disappeared.

“I missed you,” she said.

I looked at her.

She stared at the water.

“I missed you too.”

She rubbed her thumb across her palm.

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Digging.”

“Because something's wrong.”

She didn't answer.

“I found the property records.”

Her shoulders stiffened.

“You shouldn't have.”

“I found Meridian Holdings.”

She closed her eyes.

“Who told you about that?”

“Dad.”

“You remember?”

“Of course.”

Claire looked at me.

“You really don't know.”

“Know what?”

She shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom will destroy me.”

That sentence changed everything.

I leaned closer.

“Claire, what did Mom do?”

She stood.

“Nothing.”

“You just said—”

“I said I can't talk about it.”

“Claire.”

She walked toward the house.

I followed.

“Please.”

She stopped at the door.

“Do you remember Dad's last week?”

I did.

Too well.

He had been sick, but not seriously enough for anyone to expect him to die.

At least that's what we had been told.

He had spent his final week making phone calls.

He had also asked me to come to his study.

I remembered the conversation.

Not every word.

But one sentence had stayed with me.

“If anyone tells you this house was never yours, don't believe them.”

I had laughed.

He hadn't.

I hadn't understood why.

Now I did.

Claire looked at me.

“He knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That Mom was planning something.”

“What?”

“I don't know everything.”

“But you know something.”

She nodded.

“Dad made copies.”

“Copies of what?”

“Documents.”

“Where?”

She hesitated.

Then she looked toward the house.

“Somewhere Mom would never search.”

“Where?”

She whispered a location.

I felt the answer before she said it.

“The old boathouse.”

My father's old boathouse sat behind the trees near the north end of the property.

It had been unused for years.

I remembered the key.

My father had kept it on a brass ring in his desk.

The desk was in his study.

The study was locked.

Unless—

I looked at Claire.

“Do you have the key?”

She shook her head.

“You do.”

“No.”

“You were wearing Dad's bracelet.”

Her face changed.

“That has nothing to do with it.”

“It has everything to do with it.”

She reached into her pocket.

A small brass key rested in her palm.

I stared at it.

“You lied.”

“I was scared.”

“Of Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked toward the house.

“Because she knows I took it.”

We walked to the boathouse together.

The lock was old.

The key turned on the second attempt.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Fishing equipment.

Old life jackets.

A broken radio.

A wooden workbench.

I remembered helping Dad repair a boat here when I was twelve.

Claire went to the far wall.

She pulled away a faded canvas tarp.

Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.

She pushed.

Nothing happened.

I pressed beside her.

The panel shifted.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a metal box.

My name was written on the lid.

Not our family name.

My full legal name.

My hands went cold.

Claire stepped back.

“I've never opened it.”

“Why not?”

“Because Dad told me not to.”

“You knew it was here.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Mom threatened me.”

“With what?”

Claire swallowed.

“She said if I helped you, she'd make sure I lost everything.”

I opened the box.

Inside were documents wrapped in plastic.

A letter.

A photograph.

A USB drive.

And a sealed envelope marked with my father's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

The first line read:

For my daughter, when she finally comes home.

I sat on the floor.

Claire crouched beside me.

I opened the letter.

The first sentence was enough to make my chest tighten.

“If you're reading this, then the people I trusted have already told you that this property belongs to them.”

I looked at Claire.

She was crying silently.

I kept reading.

My father had known my mother would try to take control of the estate.

He had created Meridian Holdings years before his death.

But there was more.

The house had never been transferred to Evelyn.

It had been placed in a trust.

A trust established for me.

Not as a future possibility.

Not as an inheritance dependent on anyone's approval.

As its sole beneficiary.

The deed had been structured so that control would pass to me when I returned from military service.

Fourteen months earlier, according to the letter, my father had expected me to be overseas.

He had known exactly when the condition would mature.

He had also predicted that Evelyn would try to interfere.

I read the next paragraph twice.

Then I reached the final page.

There was a name.

Richard Hale.

The new attorney.

My father had written:

If Richard is representing your mother, do not meet him alone.

I looked up.

Claire had stopped crying.

“What?”

I handed her the letter.

She read it.

Then she looked at me.

“That's why Mom was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Claire's face had gone pale.

“The lawyer.”

“Why?”

“I don't think Richard Hale works for Mom.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

She pointed toward the envelope.

“Read the back.”

I turned it over.

There was one final handwritten line.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the lake house is theirs.

Underneath it was a phone number.

And beneath the number was a name.

Richard Hale.

My father's attorney.

I reached for my phone.

Before I could dial, the boathouse door slammed open.

Evelyn stood outside.

She wasn't alone.

Richard Hale was beside her.

And the expression on his face told me he already knew what we had found.
