The envelope was cream-colored, thick, and addressed entirely in Brenda's handwriting.

She recognized it immediately.

For several seconds, she simply stood there holding it.

Damian was in the garden speaking with the groundskeeper. The house was unusually quiet. Helena had gone to the market, and Gertrude had not visited since the uncomfortable dinner several weeks earlier.

Fiona turned the envelope over.

There was no return address.

She carried it to the kitchen and placed it beside her coffee.

She did not open it.

Instead, she watched the steam disappear from the surface of her cup.

When Damian came inside, he noticed the envelope before he noticed her expression.

“What's that?”

“Brenda.”

His face changed.

“You don't have to read it.”

“I know.”

“You don't have to answer.”

“I know that too.”

He pulled out the chair opposite her but did not touch the envelope.

Fiona finally opened it.

The letter was three pages.

The first paragraph was an apology.

The second explained.

By the third paragraph, Fiona had stopped believing that Brenda was writing to defend herself.

Brenda admitted that she had deliberately restricted Fiona's access to the household accounts. She had instructed staff to keep Fiona away from formal dinners. She had told Gertrude that Fiona was becoming too involved with employees and former staff.

But then came the detail that made Fiona stop.

Brenda had not acted alone.

She had been frightened.

Not of Fiona's spending.

Of what Fiona knew.

Fiona read the sentence twice.

Damian noticed.

“What?”

She handed him the letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

He stopped.

“That's not possible.”

“What?”

“She says she found something in Dad's old files.”

Damian's father had died seven years earlier.

Fiona waited.

“What kind of files?”

Damian continued reading.

Then he looked up.

“She says our father had been paying someone.”

“Who?”

“She doesn't know.”

Fiona leaned forward.

The letter explained that Brenda had discovered several old transfers from a private family account. They had been made years before Damian became wealthy. The payments had gone to a woman whose name Brenda did not recognize.

The transfers had stopped shortly before Damian's father died.

Brenda had searched the old records.

She found Fiona's name in one of them.

Not as a recipient.

As a reference.

Fiona's stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Damian read the last page.

“Brenda says she thought you knew about the money.”

“I knew?”

Damian looked at the letter again.

“I don't know.”

He stood.

“We should find the records.”

Fiona watched him.

“You're doing it again.”

He stopped.

“What?”

“Trying to solve it immediately.”

He looked at her.

She softened.

“But this time, maybe we should.”

They went to the library.

Damian unlocked a cabinet he rarely opened.

Inside were old company files, tax documents, property records, and several boxes belonging to his father.

He carried them onto the floor.

Fiona sat beside him.

For two hours, they searched.

The first box contained nothing unusual.

The second held property deeds.

The third contained old correspondence.

Then Fiona found a small black notebook.

She opened it.

Most pages contained names and figures.

Several were marked with initials.

She recognized one immediately.

M.

“Miriam?”

Damian took the notebook.

“No.”

He turned another page.

There was an address.

Not Miriam's.

Another address.

A house across town.

Fiona looked at him.

“Do you know this place?”

“No.”

She turned the page again.

A second name appeared.

Eleanor Vale.

Damian stared at it.

“That name…”

“What?”

“My mother mentioned her once.”

“Who was she?”

“I don't woman.

Damian went completely still.

“That's my father.”

Fiona looked at the woman.

“Eleanor?”

He nodded.

“She was earlier.

Fiona looked at Damian.

“How old were you?”

“Six.”

The room became quiet.

Then Damian noticed something written beneath the date.

One sentence.

She deserves what I promised.

He stared at it.

“Who deserves what?”

“I don't know.”

Fiona took the photograph.

There was something tucked behind it.

A small folded receipt.

She opened it.

The receipt was for a hospital.

The date was twenty-eight years earlier.

The patient name was Eleanor Vale.

The accompanying note mentioned childbirth.

Damian sat down.

“My father had another child.”

Fiona turned.

Gertrude stood in the doorway.

Her face had gone white.

She looked at the photograph.

Then at Damian.

“Where did you find that?”

Damian stood.

“You know Eleanor.”

Gertrude said nothing.

“Mother.”

She closed her eyes.

“I hoped you would photograph.

“She was someone your father loved before he met me.”

“That doesn't explain the child.”

“No.”

She lowered herself into a chair.

“She had a daughter.”

Damian stared at her.

“Where is she?”

Gertrude looked at Fiona.

Then back at Damian.

“She was raised by another family.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was afraid of scandal.”

Fiona felt a chill.

“What was her name?”

Gertrude's eyes filled.

“Anna.”

Damian frowned.

“Anna what?”

Gertrude whispered the surname.

“Anna Vale.”

Fiona looked at the notebook.

The name suddenly seemed familiar.

She turned several pages.

There it was.

Anna Vale.

Beside it was a payment.

And beneath that payment was Fiona's name.

Fiona stared.

“Why is my name here?”

Gertrude did not answer.

Damian stepped closer.

“Mother.”

Gertrude looked at him.

“Because your father asked Fiona's grandmother to help.”

Fiona felt the room library.

Fiona looked at Damian.

Neither of them spoke.

The mystery had begun with a household envelope.

Now it had reached back nearly three decades.

And
