painting by the lake. She offered him money for it.”

“Did he sell it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Arthur smiled faintly.

“Because Robert said the painting wasn't for sale.”

“Why?”

“He said he was painting it for someone.”

My heart stopped.

“For whom?”

Arthur looked directly at me.

“For you.”

I couldn't speak.

The room became very still.

“But we hadn't met yet.”

“I know.”

That was the part I couldn't understand.

Arthur explained that Robert had been young and foolishly romantic. unlike him.”

Arthur smiled.

“He was twenty-three.”

I laughed despite myself.

“Fair.”

The tension eased for a moment.

Then I remembered the note.

“Why did he write her name?”

Arthur looked at the paper.

“I don't know.”

I studied the old handwriting.

Maybe Robert hadn't been hiding a woman.

Maybe he had been preserving a memory.

But there was still something unfinished.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I walked into the living room.

The painting hung above the fireplace again.

I stood beneath it.

For years, I had thought Robert's painting had been destroyed.

Then I found another version halfway around the world.

Then I found his letters.

Now I had discovered a hidden note.

It felt as though Robert had left a trail through time.

Not because he wanted me trapped in the past.

Because he wanted me to understand something.

I went to the kitchen.

Arthur was awake.

He was sitting at the table with two cups of tea.

“You couldn't sleep either?”

“No.”

He pushed one cup toward me.

I sat.

“I think I understand why he kept the painting.”

Arthur waited.

“He wanted me to come here.”

“Yes.”

“But not because he wanted me to remember him.”

Arthur nodded slowly.

“He wanted you to remember yourself.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“Think about what you were like before everyone needed you.”

I stared at the steam rising from my tea.

I couldn't remember.

That frightened me.

Then Arthur said, “Maybe that's what the lake was for.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“Robert painted a place where he felt free.”

I glanced toward the living room.

“Maybe he wanted you to find your own.”

The next morning, I called my children.

All four answered.

That alone felt significant.

I told them about the painting.

I told them about the letters.

I didn't tell them every detail.

Some things belonged to me.

Karen cried.

Melissa apologized.

David said he was glad I was happy.

Eric was quiet.

Then he asked, “Are you coming home?”

I looked at Arthur.

Then at Robert's painting.

“No.”

There was silence.

“I love you,” I said. “But I can't come back just because you're afraid of what happens when I'm not there.”

Eric took a breath.

“I understand.”

It was the first time any of them had said those words.

After the call ended, I sat for a long time.

Arthur joined me.

“You sounded different.”

“I feel different.”

He nodded.

I looked at the painting.

“I thought selling my house meant I had lost my home.”

“What do you think now?”

“I think I had confused a building with a life.”

Arthur smiled.

“That's a dangerous realization.”

“Why?”

“Because once you know it, you can't unknow it.”

I laughed.

He reached across the table.

This time, I didn't hesitate.

I placed my hand in his.

There was no promise.

No declaration.

No attempt to replace Robert.

Just two older people who had lived enough life to understand that companionship could arrive quietly.

A week later, I booked the next part of my journey.

Arthur looked at the itinerary.

“You're still going?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“I'm also coming back.”

He smiled.

“When?”

“I don't know.”

“That sounds familiar.”

I folded the itinerary.

“I'm learning to leave room for surprises.”

He laughed.

Before I left Australia, I stood once more beside the lake.

The cottage was gone.

The dock was gone.

But the water remained.

I took out Robert's letter.

I read the final lines again.

Then I folded it carefully and placed it back in my bag.

I didn't feel as though I was saying goodbye.

I felt as though I had finally understood what Robert had wanted me to know.

He had never wanted me to spend the rest of my life looking backward.

He wanted me to keep moving.

And for the first time, I was doing exactly that.

But before I left, Arthur handed me a small envelope.

“What now?”

“Open it when you're alone.”

I frowned.

“Another mystery?”

“Apparently.”

I put it in my bag.

I didn't open it until I was sitting alone at the airport.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Robert.

Not of the lake.

It was a photograph of Arthur and Robert standing outside the old hotel when they were young.

On the back, Arthur had written only one sentence.

He would want you to know that you were the best thing that ever happened to him.

I stared at those words until the airport announcement blurred into the background.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Arthur.

Coffee when you come back.

I smiled.

For the first time, I didn't wonder whether I was abandoning anyone by leaving.

I simply stood, lifted my suitcase, and walked toward the gate.

There were still questions.

The old photograph.

The woman's name.

The hidden note.

The reason Robert had preserved so many memories of Australia.

But I no longer felt compelled to solve every mystery immediately.

Some answers needed time.

And perhaps that was another lesson I had forgotten.

Life did not require me to understand everything before I was allowed to continue living it.

I boarded the plane with Robert's letter in my bag, Arthur's photograph in my hand, and a future I had finally stopped asking permission to enter.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Thought Leaving
