Robert's name appeared as purchaser, but the registered owner was Abigail Morgan.

My name.

The property description included a rural parcel near the same lake where Robert had painted the original Waiting Shore.

I stared at the legal description.

“I don't remember this.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

I looked at Arthur.

“What?”

“Maybe Robert wanted it to remain a surprise.”

“A surprise that lasted twenty-five years?”

“Robert was very good at delayed surprises.”

I almost smiled.

Then I noticed something else.

The purchase date was only three days before Robert's secret return to Australia.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

He had traveled back.

He had visited Eleanor.

He had gone to the lake.

He had considered taking the original painting.

And somewhere in those few days, he had bought land in my name.

But he had returned home without telling me.

Why?

I called Eric again.

“Did the document include anything else?”

“There's a survey map.”

“Send it.”

He did.

I opened the image.

The property bordered the lake on one side.

On the other side was an old access road.

At the bottom of the map, Robert had written something by hand.

Not a sentence.

Just a word.

Home.

I closed my eyes.

Arthur touched my shoulder.

“You all right?”

“No.”

He didn't move away.

“I think I'm beginning to understand him.”

“That can be dangerous.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because understanding someone doesn't erase what they did.”

“I know.”

I folded the document.

“Book the flight.”

Arthur smiled.

“You're giving orders again.”

“Yes.”

“I was beginning to miss that.”

We left France the next morning.

June was supposed to arrive the following day, but I called her from the airport.

“June, I need to change plans.”

She was quiet.

“Is everything okay?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

I told her about the property.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she said, “I'll meet you there.”

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

“I don't want to drag you into something complicated.”

“Abby.”

“Yes?”

“You once flew across an ocean because I said there was a cheap hotel near the beach.”

“It wasn't cheap.”

“It was by your standards.”

“You stole my suitcase.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You wore my underwear.”

“That was an accident.”

I laughed.

She laughed too.

“Go,” she said. “I'll follow.”

By the time we reached Melbourne, the jet lag had made everything feel dreamlike.

Arthur drove us toward the lake.

The farther we went, the quieter the roads became.

Then I saw the water.

My chest tightened.

The property was marked by a weathered wooden gate.

A small sign bore a number.

Nothing else.

Arthur stopped the car.

I stepped outside.

The air smelled of wet earth and eucalyptus.

For a moment, I simply stood there.

This was the place Robert had bought.

Not for himself.

For me.

I walked through the gate.

There was no house.

Only a small clearing, a few mature trees, and the remains of an old foundation near the shore.

I turned toward Arthur.

“What was here?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

We walked closer.

The foundation was partially covered by grass.

Near one corner stood a rusted metal post.

I crouched.

Something had been carved into it.

R.M.

My heart skipped.

Robert had been here.

Not just nearby.

Here.

I touched the letters.

Arthur crouched beside me.

“There's something else.”

He pointed toward the foundation.

A small metal box was partly buried beneath the soil.

We pulled it free.

The lid was rusted but intact.

Arthur tried to open it.

It wouldn't move.

I searched my bag.

“I have a key.”

He looked at me.

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

I had carried the small brass key for years.

Robert had given it to me shortly before he became seriously ill.

He told me it was for something important.

I had forgotten about it.

Until now.

I inserted the key.

The lock turned.

Inside was a plastic-wrapped envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

I stared at the handwriting.

Robert.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The letter began with an apology.

Not for the secret trip.

Not for the property.

For something else.

Robert wrote that he had spent years trying to build a place where we could eventually slow down.

He had wanted a small house by the lake.

A garden.

A room for grandchildren.

A porch where we could drink coffee.

He wanted it after retirement.

He wanted it after the children were settled.

He wanted it when the mortgage was smaller.

He wanted it when work became easier.

And then he realized he had been doing exactly what he had always promised himself he wouldn't do.

Waiting.

The property was his attempt to stop waiting.

But he hadn't told me because he wanted to surprise me.

Then Eric's accident happened.

Robert returned home.

The project stopped.

He never came back to finish it.

I sat on the ground.

Arthur took the letter from my hand when my fingers stopped working.

He read silently.

Then he handed it back.

There was one final page.

Robert had written that if I ever discovered the property, I should not feel obligated to build the life he had imagined.

I could sell it.

Give it away.

Leave it untouched.

Or build something entirely different.

The land was not his final instruction.

It was an opportunity.

I looked at Arthur.

“He gave me permission to change his dream.”

Arthur smiled.

“He finally learned.”

“What?”

“That love isn't deciding what someone else's future should look like.”

I folded the letter.

Then I heard a car.

We turned.

A taxi stopped near the gate.

June stepped out.

She looked older than the woman in the photograph.

So did I.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then she opened her arms.

I walked straight into them.

We held each other for a long time.

“You really came,” I whispered.

“You really went.”

We laughed through tears.

June looked toward the lake.

“So this is why you dragged me back to Australia.”

“I didn't drag you.”

“You absolutely did.”

Arthur approached.

June looked at him.

“And you must be Arthur.”

He extended his hand.

“I've heard a lot about you.”

June raised an eyebrow.

“From her?”

“Some of it.”

She looked at me.

“Good man.”

Arthur laughed.

“I like her already.”

We spent the afternoon walking the property.

June listened as I told her about Robert.

About Eleanor.

About the painting.

About the map.

About the deed.

She said very little.

When I finished, she looked toward the water.

“Your husband spent twenty-five years trying to get you here.”

I nodded.

“And you came without knowing.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe he was better at knowing you than you thought.”

I smiled.

“Maybe.”

Then June pointed toward the old foundation.

“What's that?”

“I don't know.”

We approached it.

Near the far corner, beneath a layer of grass, we found a stone marker.

There was a date carved into it.

The date of my wedding.

I stared.

Arthur crouched beside it.

“Robert marked the foundation on your anniversary.”

June looked at me.

“You really didn't know?”

“No.”

She touched my arm.

“Then perhaps he wasn't hiding this from you.”

“What was he doing?”

“Saving it.”

I looked across the lake.

For the first time, the property no longer felt like a secret.

It felt like a conversation Robert had started decades earlier.

And now it was my turn to decide what to say.

<a
