Ryan drove because he knew the route, while Marcus followed in an unmarked vehicle.

Valerie sat beside Ryan in silence.

The number from the photograph was written on a piece of paper between them. Neither of them had mentioned it since leaving the house.

Ryan kept both hands on the steering wheel.

“You can turn around,” Valerie said.

He glanced at her.

“No.”

“You're not under arrest yet.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you shaking?”

He looked back at the road.

“Because I haven't been here in years.”

The answer was simple.

It was also the first thing he had said that sounded completely honest.

They stopped in front of a row of storage units.

Marcus approached the manager with the authorization documents while Valerie and Ryan waited.

A few minutes later, the manager unlocked the outer gate.

Unit 214 was at the end of the second row.

Ryan stopped walking.

“This is it.”

Valerie looked at the corrugated metal door.

“What did your father keep here?”

“Records.”

“Only records?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Marcus arrived with a key.

The lock opened on the first attempt.

The door rolled upward with a harsh metallic rattle.

Dust moved through the beam of Marcus's flashlight.

Inside were cardboard boxes stacked almost to the ceiling.

Some were labeled with dates.

Others carried the names of companies that no longer existed.

Valerie stepped inside.

The smell was dry paper, old wood, and metal.

Ryan remained near the entrance.

“My father never let me see most of this.”

Valerie looked at him.

“Yet you knew about the unit.”

“He told me where it was.”

“Why?”

“He said that if something happened to him, I should come here.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I was afraid.”

Valerie studied him.

“Of what?”

“That I'd find out why he was afraid.”

Marcus began photographing the boxes.

He opened one marked 2003.

Inside were property records.

Another contained bank statements.

A third held correspondence with the Bennetts.

Valerie searched the shelves.

Then she saw a small wooden case.

Her father's name was written on it.

She stopped.

“Ryan.”

He came closer.

“What?”

She pointed.

He stared at the box.

“I've never seen that.”

Marcus opened it carefully.

Inside was a stack of letters tied with string.

The first letter was from Valerie's father.

The second was from Ryan's father.

The third had no signature.

Marcus photographed each one before handing them to Valerie.

She opened the first.

Her father's handwriting filled the page.

He wrote that he had discovered irregular transfers from the development company and had confronted Ryan's father.

He had also discovered that the Bennetts were not merely lenders.

They were controlling the movement of money through several companies.

Valerie read silently.

Then she reached a line that made her stop.

Your son must never be placed in the middle of this.

Ryan leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

Valerie handed him the page.

His face tightened.

He read the sentence twice.

Then he looked at her.

“My father knew.”

“About the money?”

“About the Bennetts.”

Valerie opened another letter.

This one was addressed to her father.

The writer was Ryan's father.

He admitted that he had created a structure designed to keep certain properties away from creditors.

But he insisted that Valerie's father had agreed to help because he believed the arrangement would protect their families.

Valerie looked at Ryan.

“Your father involved mine.”

Ryan nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The next paragraph changed everything.

It stated that the arrangement would eventually require a trusted beneficiary outside the Carter family.

The name was not written.

But the letter referred to “the daughter.”

Valerie's hands became cold.

She was the daughter.

Marcus read over her shoulder.

“This predates your marriage by years.”

“Yes.”

Another document showed a trust created shortly after Valerie's twenty-first birthday.

Her name appeared as beneficiary.

The trustee was Daniel Bennett.

Valerie stared.

“I knew nothing about this.”

Ryan whispered, “Neither did I.”

Marcus turned another page.

The trust held property and financial interests worth millions.

But there was a condition.

The assets could not be transferred without Valerie's authorization.

That explained the forged signatures.

The money had been legally tied to her.

Ryan's recent scheme had not created the problem.

It had been an attempt to take control of something that had existed for decades.

Valerie suddenly understood why the Bennetts needed her.

She was not simply Ryan's wife.

She was the legal obstacle.

A box fell from the upper shelf.

Everyone turned.

Nothing was behind it.

Marcus frowned.

“Let's keep moving.”

Valerie noticed another container beneath the fallen box.

It was smaller.

Metal.

Locked.

Ryan stared at it.

“I know that.”

“You've seen it?”

“My father had one like it.”

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a single envelope.

The handwriting belonged to Daniel Bennett.

Valerie opened it.

The first line was addressed to Ryan.

Your father made a promise he could not keep.

The second page mentioned the trust.

The third explained that the Bennetts had been trying to recover money for years.

Then came the part Valerie had been waiting for.

The missing page.

It was folded inside the envelope.

Marcus compared it with the marital agreement.

Page eight.

The clause everyone had been looking for.

Valerie read it.

The document did not transfer her assets to Ryan.

It did the opposite.

It stated that any attempt to transfer the trust assets without Valerie's independent approval would invalidate the transaction and trigger an investigation into the original trust structure.

Valerie looked up.

“They needed this page destroyed.”

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.”

Ryan sat down on a box.

“They told me the agreement transferred everything to me.”

Valerie looked at him.

“Who?”

“Michael.”

“And Daniel?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus asked, “Did they show you the complete agreement?”

“No.”

“Then you signed documents based on a false explanation.”

Ryan looked at Valerie.

“I thought I was protecting what my father left.”

“You were stealing what belonged to me.”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough to hide it.”

He looked away.

The distinction mattered.

He had not created the original fraud.

But he had chosen to benefit from it.

Marcus placed the missing page into an evidence sleeve.

Then he noticed a final document underneath the envelope.

A list of names.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

If Valerie ever learns the truth, give her the choice her father wanted her to have.

Valerie's breath caught.

“What choice?”

Marcus turned the page.

The answer was on the back.

She could either keep the trust and expose the entire network, or surrender it and walk away from the family businesses.

Valerie read the sentence again.

Her father had apparently anticipated that the truth would eventually reach her.

He had not chosen for her.

He had left the choice to her.

Then Ryan's phone rang.

Marcus took it from the evidence bag and looked at the screen.

Daniel.

He answered on speaker.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“You found the page.”

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“Then you know why we did what we did.”

Valerie stepped closer.

“I want to hear it from you.”

There was a long pause.

“You were never supposed to inherit that trust.”

“I did not ask for it.”

“Your father did.”

“My father didn't choose this.”

“He chose survival.”

Valerie's voice hardened.

“And you chose fraud.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Ryan was supposed to sign the transfer before you discovered the documents.”

Ryan looked down.

Valerie turned toward him.

Daniel continued.

“He thought the trust belonged to his family.”

Valerie interrupted.

“No. He thought it belonged to him.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made Valerie's blood run cold.

“Michael is not the person you should be worried about.”

The call ended.

Marcus immediately ordered officers to locate Daniel.

Valerie looked at Ryan.

“What did he mean?”

Ryan stood.

“I don't know.”

But before he could say anything else, the storage facility lights went out.

The darkness was immediate.

A metallic crash sounded somewhere outside.

Marcus drew his weapon and told everyone to stay still.

Valerie heard footsteps.

Then the outer gate slammed shut.

Someone had come to the storage facility.

And they knew exactly where Valerie was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Man Waiting
