White roses lined the aisle, mixed with small sprigs of eucalyptus. Someone had lit candles near the altar, and their flames trembled whenever the air-conditioning came through the vents.

It should have been beautiful.

It was beautiful.

That was the cruel part.

This was supposed to be the happiest morning of my life.

Instead, I was walking toward my future with my grandfather because my mother had decided I was her greatest regret.

We were halfway down the aisle when I finally looked toward the front.

My mother was sitting beside Claire and Emily.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't smiling.

She was staring at my grandfather.

Not me.

Him.

That bothered me.

Her expression was not the expression of a woman who had just been surprised by a substitute escort.

It looked like recognition.

Like she had known this was possible.

Like she had been waiting for him to do exactly what he was doing.

I looked at my grandfather.

He noticed.

“Don't,” he whispered.

“Don't what?”

“Don't look at heart began pounding.

We continued toward the altar.

My fiancé, Daniel, stood waiting beneath the floral arch.

The moment he saw me, his face changed.

Not because of my dress.

Not because my grandfather was beside me.

Because he knew something was wrong.

Daniel had met my family almost four years earlier.

He knew my mother and I had never been especially close.

But he had never understood why.

I had never told him everything.

Some family wounds become so old that explaining them feels like reopening a grave.

When we reached the front, my grandfather stopped.

He turned to me.

“You're safe.”

I nodded.

His eyes moved toward chosen to spend my life with.

Then I looked at my mother.

“No.”

Daniel squeezed my hands.

“Then we continue.”

The ceremony began.

The officiant spoke.

I barely heard him.

My mind kept returning to my grandfather's reaction.

Today isn't the day.

That phrase stayed with me.

Why would today not be the day?

What was he protecting?

What did Mom know?

And why had she called me her greatest regret?

The vows came.

Daniel's voice shook slightly when he spoke his.

Mine did too.

When we exchanged rings, I finally felt something loosen inside my chest.

For the first time that morning, I thought maybe I could make it through the day without breaking.

Then the officiant pronounced us married.

The church erupted in applause.

Daniel kissed me.

People stood.

My sisters cried.

My grandfather smiled.

And my mother remained seated.

She clapped twice.

Slowly.

Then stopped.

I noticed something in her hand.

A small envelope.

Cream-colored.

Old.

She held it so tightly that the edge bent beneath her fingers.

I
