was quiet.

“Because your mother believed the truth would destroy you.”

“She destroyed me anyway.”

He flinched.

I regretted the words immediately.

But I didn't take them back.

“What happened to Michael?”

Grandpa looked toward the window.

“He left.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother ended the relationship.”

“Why?”

Grandpa didn't answer.

“Why?”

“He wanted you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“He wanted custody.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He believed your mother was unstable.”

I shook my head.

“She was raising me.”

“She was.”

“So why would he say that?”

Grandpa's expression changed.

“Because he had evidence.”

“What evidence?”

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“What evidence?”

Grandpa reached into the drawer.

He pulled out a second envelope.

It was older than the first.

The paper had yellowed at the edges.

“This is what your mother was afraid you'd find.”

I stared at it.

“What is it?”

“Something Michael left.”

I reached for it.

Grandpa stopped me.

“Before you open it, understand something.”

“What?”

“Your mother made terrible choices.”

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“But she made them because she was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

He looked directly at me.

“Losing you.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

I read the first line.

Then stopped.

The words blurred.

Daniel came into the doorway.

“What is it?”

I handed him the letter.

He read it silently.

His face changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“You should read the last page.”

I turned the pages with trembling hands.

There was one sentence underlined in dark ink.

If she ever learns the truth, tell her why her mother really chose to keep her.

I stared at it.

“Why her mother chose to keep her?”

Grandpa nodded.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

“Grandpa.”

He swallowed.

“It means Michael wasn't the only person who wanted you.”

My skin went cold.

“Who else?”

Grandpa looked toward the door.

No one was there.

He lowered his voice.

“Your mother wasn't the person who decided you would be raised in this family.”

“What are you saying?”

He looked at the letter.

“I'm saying your birth was not the beginning of this story.”

I couldn't speak.

He continued.

“Something happened before you were born.”

“What?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Your mother made a promise.”

“To whom?”

He hesitated.

Then the library door opened.

Emily stood there.

Her face was pale.

“She called me.”

I turned.

“Mom?”

Emily nodded.

“She wants us to come to her house.”

“Why?”

“She said there's something in the attic.”

Grandpa stood slowly.

“Then it's time.”

I looked at him.

“Time for what?”

He picked up his
