frowned.

“What second account?”

“A brokerage account opened during your marriage.”

My stomach tightened.

“I don't know anything about it.”

“I know.”

“How much?”

She gave me the approximate value.

I couldn't speak.

It wasn't a fortune.

But it was significant.

Significant enough to make me realize the house had not been an isolated incident.

“Who opened it?”

“Max.”

“When?”

“Three years before the divorce.”

I stared at the kitchen wall.

Three years.

That meant he had opened it while we were still married.

While he was telling me we were struggling.

While I was cutting household expenses.

While I was postponing things I wanted because we supposedly needed to save.

I remembered one winter when our heating bill had been unusually high.

I had suggested turning the thermostat down.

Max had agreed.

Then, two weeks later, he bought an expensive watch.

I had said nothing.

At the time, I thought marriage meant compromise.

Now I wondered how many compromises had been one-sided.

My attorney continued.

“There are records showing transfers into the account.”

“From where?”

“Your joint hurt.

Because the facts were finally clearer than the memories.

I asked for copies of everything.

My attorney agreed.

When I hung up, I sat alone for several minutes.

Then I called Edward.

“I need to change our plans.”

“Everything okay?”

“No.”

He didn't ask me to explain immediately.

“Do you want me there?”

The question made my throat tighten.

“Yes.”

He arrived less than an hour later.

I handed him the documents.

He didn't read them.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Do you want me to read these?”

“No.”

“Then I won't.”

I smiled weakly.

“Thank you.”

He sat beside me.

We stayed quiet.

Eventually, I said, “I keep thinking about how many times I trusted him.”

“You were married.”

“That isn't an excuse.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It's a fact.”

I leaned back.

“I don't know who I was married to.”

“You knew part of him.”

“Apparently not enough.”

“You don't have to solve that today.”

I looked at him.

“What if I never understand?”

“You don't need to understand every bad decision someone makes to know it was wrong.”

That helped.

More than he probably realized.

The legal process began quietly.

My attorney sent the demand.

Max's lawyer responded.

There were meetings.

Documents.

Numbers.

Dates.

Statements.

For the first time, my divorce was no longer a story about whether Max had stopped loving me.

It was a matter of facts.

And the facts favored me.

A week later, Max agreed to mediation.

We sat across from each other in a conference room.

There was no wedding music.

No guests.

No children.

No Edward.

Just paperwork.

My attorney sat beside me.

Max sat across from us.

He looked older.

Not dramatically.

Just tired.

His lawyer reviewed the numbers.

Then Max spoke.

“I'll pay it.”

His lawyer turned toward him.

“Max—”

“I'll pay it.”

I looked at him.

He met my eyes.

“I can't undo what I did.”

“No.”

“But I can stop defending it.”

That was the first thing he had said that sounded like accountability.

We reached an agreement.

The money would be returned.

Not immediately.

But on a structured schedule.

It would cover the amount I was owed under the settlement and the undisclosed transfers.

It wasn't everything I had lost emotionally.

Nothing could be.

But it was enough to correct the financial injustice.

When we left the building, Max stopped me.

“Veronica.”

I turned.

“I meant what I said.”

“I know.”

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

He gave a small smile.

“You haven't changed.”

“I have.”

He looked at me.

“I suppose you have.”

Then he walked away.

I stood on the sidewalk for a moment.

The sun was bright.

Cars passed.

People hurried past carrying coffee and briefcases.

Nothing in the world seemed different.

Yet everything felt different.

I had spent years believing my divorce had taken something from me.

Now I realized the divorce had also given me something.

Distance.

Perspective.

The ability to see the past without automatically defending the person who had hurt me.

That evening, Edward took me to dinner again.

This time, I chose the restaurant.

We sat outside.

The weather was warm.

For a while, neither of us mentioned Max.

Then Edward asked, “How do you feel?”

“Tired.”

“Anything else?”

“Relieved.”

He nodded.

“And angry.”

“That's fair.”

“I thought getting the money back would make me feel better.”

“Doesn't?”

“It does.”

He waited.

“But it doesn't give me back the years.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Do you know what I'm afraid of?”

“What?”

“That I'll always compare people to Max.”

Edward shook his head.

“You won't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because you're already doing something different.”

“What?”

“You're asking whether you can trust someone instead of asking whether they can prove you're worth trusting.”

I stared at him.

“That was very good.”

“I occasionally say intelligent things.”

I smiled.

Then he reached across the table.

He didn't grab my hand.

He simply placed his hand beside mine.

I looked down.

Then I placed my hand over his.

His fingers closed gently around mine.

There was no audience.

No ex-husband.

No wedding.

No reason to pretend.

Just us.

“I don't want to rush this,” I said.

“We don't have to.”

“I want it to be real.”

“It is.”

I looked at him.

“You're sure?”

“I've been sure for a long time.”

My eyes burned.

I laughed quietly.

“I wish you had told me sooner.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“I didn't notice.”

“You were married.”

We both laughed.

For the first time, the memory didn't hurt.

It simply belonged to another version of my life.

Then Edward's phone rang.

He glanced at it.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He handed me the screen.

It was a message from Max.

I read it.

I need to tell you one more thing. It isn't about the money.

I looked at Edward.

“What could possibly be left?”

Neither of us knew.

But I already understood one thing.

Whatever Max had kept hidden next, it would not decide who I was.

Not anymore.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Max’s Final Secret Had Nothing to Do With the Wedding, and What He Revealed Forced Me to Reconsider the Years I Thought I Understood

The next morning, my attorney called before I had finished breakfast. “We found something else.” I sat down. “What?” “There was a second account.” I frowned. “What second account?” “A …

[1

post-6589","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sharestory
["GET
