overlooked.

The administrator, Samuel Reed, had worked with my family since my grandfather's final years.

He greeted me without ceremony.

“I heard about Chloe.”

“She is improving.”

“Thank God.”

We sat in his office.

I placed the property documents on his desk.

“Grant attempted to purchase an interest in the house.”

Samuel read the first page.

“He couldn't.”

“I know.”

“He may have believed me.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust agreement contains a provision he would have needed to understand before attempting anything.”

“What provision?”

“The property cannot be transferred, pledged, sold, or encumbered without the approval of the family trustees.”

“Could Grant have forged anything?”

Samuel looked at the signature.

“This document is not sufficient to transfer ownership.”

I exhaled.

“Then why would he do it?”

“Perhaps because he intended to pressure you into signing.”

Martin leaned forward.

“Or because he believed she would be too distracted by the divorce to examine the details.”

Samuel nodded.

“That is possible.”

Claire opened another folder.

“We found surveillance down the hallway.

“How could he expect to get the house?”

“Pressure. Manipulation. Forged paperwork. Or some combination.”

Claire approached.

“We found something.”

She handed me a document.

It was an email from Grant to a real estate attorney.

The subject line read:

Emergency acquisition structure.

I opened it.

Grant had asked whether a marital settlement could be used to transfer property rights.

He had also asked how quickly such an agreement could be executed.

The date was six weeks earlier.

I stared at the screen.

Six weeks.

Before the yacht.

Before the photograph.

Before Chloe's hospitalization.

Before I knew anything.

This had been planned for months.

Martin read the email.

“That's enough to show intent.”

“Intent for what?”

“To acquire control of property through the divorce process.”

I closed my eyes.

Then another detail surfaced.

The investigator.

“Why was he watching me?”

Claire opened the surveillance file.

“Look at the dates.”

The first photograph had been taken the same week I met with my personal attorney.

The second was outside a bank.

The third showed me leaving a meeting with a trust adviser.

Grant had been tracking every step I took toward financial independence.

“He thought I was preparing to leave.”

“Were you?”

I looked at Claire.

“I had considered it.”

“Did you tell him?”

“No.”

“Then he knew anyway.”

I looked again at the photographs.

Maybe that was the reason he had accelerated everything.

Maybe he had sensed that I was becoming less dependent on him.

That night, Grant sent a message through his attorney.

He wanted access to Chloe.

I refused.

Martin advised me to document every request.

Then the attorney sent another message.

Grant claimed I was preventing him from seeing his daughter as punishment.

I stared at the screen.

He had still not asked how she was doing.

Only whether he could see her.

I told Martin to respond formally.

No unsupervised contact until the court reviewed the circumstances surrounding Chloe's hospitalization.

There was no argument.

No emotional speech.

Just the facts.

Then, at 11:14 p.m., my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said, “Mrs. Vance, my name is Daniel Mercer.”

“Who are you?”

“I used to work with your husband.”

“Where?”

“Northbridge.”

My pulse quickened.

“What do you want?”

“To warn you.”

“About what?”

A pause.

“Grant wasn't planning to leave you.”

I sat up.

“What was he planning?”

“He wanted you removed.”

I stared into the darkness.

“Removed from what?”

“Everything.”

The line went silent.

“Mr. Mercer?”

The call had ended.

I immediately called the number back.

It was disconnected.

I looked at the clock.

11:15.

Then at Chloe's closed hospital door.

For the first time, I understood that the documents on the table might not contain the whole story.

Someone had been helping Grant.

And someone had just become afraid enough to contact me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: A former employee stepped out of the shadows with a warning, but the evidence he carried suggested Grant’s plan reached much deeper than the money already uncovered

The trust administrator's office was only twenty minutes from the hospital.
