Music played softly near the bar while servers moved between tables carrying glasses of wine and trays of appetizers.

Ryan kept his hand at my waist.

He introduced me several times.

“This is my wife, Claire.”

There was pride in his voice.

I should have enjoyed it.

Instead, I remembered the black dress.

The zipper.

His words.

Eventually, one of his coworkers looked at me and laughed.

“Ryan, you didn't tell us your wife was this beautiful.”

Ryan smiled broadly.

“I know.”

Something about that answer bothered me.

He didn't say, “Thank you.”

He said, “I know.”

As if my appearance had become proof that he had been right all along.

I took a sip of my drink and looked across the room.

A woman stood near the bar.

She was watching Ryan.

Not openly.

Not in a way most people would notice.

But I noticed.

Her eyes followed him when he moved.

Then she looked at me.

Our eyes met.

She immediately turned away.

I told myself it meant nothing.

Maybe she worked with him.

Maybe she had simply been looking in our direction.

Maybe I was becoming suspicious because my marriage had already made me insecure.

I tried to ignore her.

Ryan remained attentive throughout the evening.

He kept one hand on my back.

He complimented my dress.

He told people I had been “working hard lately.”

When someone asked what I had been doing, he answered before I could.

“She has been really disciplined.”

I looked at him.

He smiled.

The word bothered me.

Disciplined.

As though my body were an assignment.

As though he had handed me a problem and waited for me to solve it.

On the drive home, Ryan rested his hand on my knee.

“See?”

I looked out the window.

“See what?”

“You looked amazing tonight.”

“Thank you.”

“I knew you could do it.”

I kept my eyes on the passing lights.

He didn't notice my silence.

A few days later, he brought flowers home.

I was standing at the kitchen counter cutting fruit for our daughter when he walked through the door holding a bouquet.

I stared at it.

“For me?”

He smiled.

“Who else?”

I took the flowers.

They were fresh, expensive, and completely unexpected.

I couldn't remember the last time he'd brought me any.

“You look like the woman I married again,” he said.

I evening, after our daughter went to sleep, Ryan poured himself a drink.

He seemed unusually relaxed.

“Things feel better lately,” he said.

“Do good.”

I didn't answer.

A few days later, I made a decision.

“Let's go away.”

Ryan looked up from his phone.

“Where?”

“For one night.”

His eyebrows rose.

“Just us?”

“Just us.”

He smiled.

I watched him carefully.

“The hotel where we spent our wedding night.”

His expression changed immediately.

He loved the idea.

Over the next three days, he became almost cheerful.

He bought a new shirt.

He asked what time we were leaving.

He even suggested champagne.

I watched all of it.

The excitement.

The confidence.

The certainty.

He believed he knew exactly why I had booked the room.

He thought I wanted to bring our marriage back to the place where it had once felt uncomplicated.

He was wrong.

I hadn't chosen that hotel because of romance.

I had chosen it because I knew Ryan would feel safe there.

And I needed him comfortable enough to stop pretending.

Before we left, I hired a babysitter.

Our daughter was asleep when we kissed her goodbye.

I stood over her crib longer than necessary.

Ryan waited by the door.

“You coming?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

The drive to the hotel was quiet.

Ryan talked about the room.

He talked about how long it had been since we'd had time alone.

He talked about how good it was that I had “found myself again.”

I listened.

I didn't correct him.

The hotel lobby looked almost exactly as I remembered it.

Soft lamps.

Dark wood.

White flowers arranged near the reception desk.

Somewhere in the distance, a piano played a slow melody.

Ryan looked around.

“Feels familiar.”

“It does.”

He smiled at me.

“Remember our wedding night?”

“I remember.”

He reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

The room was beautiful.

A bottle of sparkling water waited on the table beside two glasses. The bed had been turned down. The curtains were partly open, showing the city lights beyond the window.

Ryan walked toward the window.

“This was a good idea.”

I set my purse down.

“Was it?”

He turned.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Dinner was downstairs.

We sat across from each other beneath warm lighting while a pianist played somewhere beyond the dining room.

Ryan looked happier than he had in months.

He ordered wine.

He talked about work.

He asked about the baby.

He asked about my routine.

Then he smiled.

“You know, I think we're getting back to normal.”

I studied him.

“What does normal mean?”

He shrugged.

“You know.
