7 – Returning to Linden Street Without a Bucket Felt Wrong Until I Opened the Blue Door and Found Something Waiting Inside

Thursday came.

I drove to Linden Street alone.

I left my vacuum in the garage.

I left my bucket under the sink.

I left every bottle of cleaner at home.

For the first time in eight years, I arrived at 418 Linden Street with nothing in my hands.

Daniel's car was already parked outside.

I sat behind the wheel for a moment.

The house looked exactly the same from the street.

Blue door.

White columns.

Oak tree.

But when I stepped inside, I knew immediately that the place had changed.

The furniture was gone.

The walls were bare.

The house echoed.

Still, the smell of old wood remained.

I closed the door behind me.

“Carly?”

Daniel's voice came from the kitchen.

I followed it.

He had spread architectural drawings across the counter.

Beside them was a small stack of my old notebooks.

I stopped.

“Where did you get those?”

“Mrs. Whitaker.”

“Of course.”

He smiled.

“She sent them.”

I picked up the first one.

My handwriting from eight years earlier looked younger somehow.

I opened it.

Thursday.

Kitchen faucet dripping.

Upstairs bathroom grout needs attention.

Front porch light flickering.

Ordinary notes.

Yet seeing them in that empty house made them feel like records from another life.

Daniel pointed toward the hallway.

“I'd like to walk through room by room.”

“All right.”

We began downstairs.

I showed him where the original flooring continued beneath the newer sections.

I pointed out a repaired water stain.

I explained which cabinet doors had always stuck.

I told him the dining room had once been used for Christmas dinners.

He listened.

He asked questions.

He didn't dismiss anything as sentimental.

That surprised me.

In the living room, he stopped beside the empty wall where the family photographs had once hung.

“Was there a photograph here?”

“Yes.”

“Of who?”

“Her husband.”

Daniel nodded.

“Why did she take it?”

“She didn't.”

I looked around.

“She probably packed it.”

He studied the wall.

“There are still nail marks.”

“Yes.”

He smiled faintly.

“You notice everything.”

“That's what you hired me for.”

“I didn't hire you.”

I looked at him.

“Then what am I doing here?”

“Helping.”

The word sounded simple.

But it wasn't.

We went upstairs.

I showed him the floorboard that creaked near the bathroom.

The window latch that stuck.

The small crack in the molding.

Then I opened the attic door.

The room smelled dusty and cold.

Sunlight came through the windows.

I looked toward the far corner.

The broken window was gone.

A new pane had been installed.

I smiled.

“Mrs. Whitaker told you about the bird's nest?”

Daniel looked at me.

“No.”

I pointed.

“My daughter found a nest there when she was nine.”

He smiled.

“Forty-two windows.”

I stared at him.

“You know about that?”

“Mrs. Whitaker told me.”

I laughed.

“Of course she did.”

We stood there in silence.

Then Daniel asked, “What else?”

I looked around.

“There's a loose board under the window.”

He stepped closer.

“Here?”

“Yes.”

He lifted it carefully.

Underneath was a shallow wooden compartment.

We both froze.

“What is that?” he asked.

“I don't know.”

He looked at me.

“You've cleaned this attic for eight years.”

“I didn't move floorboards.”

He knelt.

The compartment contained a small metal box.

Dust covered the lid.

Daniel looked at me.

“Do you want me to open it?”

I hesitated.

“This is private property.”

“You're right.”

He closed the compartment.

“Then we call Mrs. Whitaker.”

We called her.

She answered on the second ring.

When Daniel told her what we had found, she went silent.

Then she said, “I know.”

I felt a chill.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

“What's in it?”

She hesitated.

“My husband's letters.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Why would they be under the floor?”

“He put them there.”

“Why?”

“He wanted me to find them after he died.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why didn't you?”

“I did.”

“Then why leave them?”

Her voice softened.

“Because some things are easier to hide than to understand.”

I didn't know what that meant.

She continued.

“Take the box out.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Do you want us to open it?”

“No.”

Her voice became firm.

“Not without me.”

Daniel agreed.

The next morning, Susan arranged for her mother to speak with us by video call.

Mrs. Whitaker appeared on the screen from her apartment.

She looked nervous.

I had never seen her nervous before.

“Open it,” she said.

Daniel lifted the lid.

Inside were letters.

Dozens.

Some tied with string.

Others folded individually.

I recognized her husband's handwriting from the note she had shown me.

Mrs. Whitaker closed her eyes.

“I should have destroyed them.”

“What are they?” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Letters he wrote before we bought the house.”

Daniel opened the first.

I didn't read it.

Neither did he.

Mrs. Whitaker said, “He had a brother.”

I looked up.

She had never mentioned a brother.

“He died before we moved into Linden Street.”

“How?”

“An accident.”

Her voice trembled.

“He was the owner of the property before us.”

I stared at the screen.

“What?”

“My husband inherited the house from him.”

Daniel looked through the papers.

“The house belonged to your husband's family?”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“He promised his brother he would keep it.”

I looked around the attic.

Suddenly, the house felt different.

Not haunted.

Not mysterious.

Just older than I had understood.

Mrs. Whitaker continued.

“My husband believed the house should remain with someone who valued what happened there.”

“And that's why you sold it to Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“But you didn't know him.”

“No.”

“Then why trust him?”

She smiled sadly.

“I didn't.”

She looked directly at me.

“I trusted you.”

The words silenced the room.

She continued.

“I knew that if you approved of the person who bought it, the house would be safe.”

I felt tears rise.

“Margaret.”

She shook her head.

“Don't make this harder.”

I looked away.

Daniel quietly gathered the letters.

Then he said, “I think the house should remain as it is.”

Mrs. Whitaker nodded.

“That is all I wanted.”

The call ended.

For a while, none of us spoke.

Then Daniel turned toward me.

“I have a question.”

“What?”

“Would you consider working with me?”

I laughed.

“Cleaning?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Property manager.”

I stared at him.

“I don't know how to do that.”

“You know that house better than anyone alive.”

“That doesn't make me qualified.”

“It makes you indispensable.”

I looked toward the attic window.

For eight years, I had believed my job was to remove dust.

Now someone was asking me to protect the place I had cleaned.

The difference frightened me.

But not enough to say no.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The First Decision I Made for the House Was the One I Never Expected, and It
