following week.

Not because I knew what I was doing.

I didn't.

I accepted because every time I imagined someone else making decisions about Linden Street, I felt a quiet panic I couldn't explain.

My first task was simple.

Inventory.

Furniture.

Fixtures.

Photographs.

Original hardware.

Windows.

Flooring.

Electrical work.

Plumbing.

Everything.

I created a spreadsheet.

Daniel laughed when he saw it.

“You really are a cleaner.”

“Why?”

“You organize everything.”

“That's what cleaning is.”

He shook his contractors.

I handled the details.

If someone wanted to replace an original door, I asked why.

If the reason was purely cosmetic, I objected.

If something was unsafe, I agreed immediately.

The house slowly began to recover.

Not become new.

Recover.

The distinction mattered.

The kitchen floor was restored rather than replaced.

The cabinets were repaired.

The windows were reglazed.

The blue door was sanded and repainted in the same shade.

The staircase remained exactly where it was.

The upstairs bathroom received new plumbing but kept its original tile where possible.

Daniel eventually stopped asking whether something could be changed and started asking whether it needed to be.

That was progress.

Three months later, I received a call from Susan.

“Mom wants to know whether the house still has forty-two windows.”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

“I'll tell her.”

“Tell her Willa counted.”

“She remembers.”

“Of course.”

“She also wants to give you something.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“I don't know.”

That Saturday, Margaret returned.

She arrived with Susan.

I met them on the porch.

Margaret stood there with a cane she hadn't needed the last time I saw her.

She looked at the house.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she touched the blue door.

“I thought I'd never see this again.”

I stepped beside her.

“You're here now.”

She smiled.

Inside, she walked slowly.

She stopped in every room.

The living room.

The dining room.

The kitchen.

The stairs.

Nothing had been changed without reason.

She ran her fingers along the restored cabinet.

“You listened.”

I looked at Daniel.

He shrugged.

“She did most of the arguing.”

Margaret laughed.

“She always did.”

We reached the kitchen.

The little round table was gone.

I hadn't expected it to remain.

Margaret noticed my expression.

“Where is it?”

I told her Daniel had stored it in the garage.

“Bring it in.”

We did.

The three of us carried it back into the kitchen.

It fit perfectly.

Margaret sat down.

I sat across from her.

For a moment, we were back where we had been on that Saturday before she moved.

Except this time, the house was not empty.

It was alive again.

She opened her purse.

“I have something for you.”

She placed an envelope on the table.

I looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a legal document.

I read the first page.

Then stopped.

I looked at her.

“What is this?”

She smiled.

“A provision.”

“For what?”

“The house.”

I kept reading.

She had established a small trust connected to the property.

A portion of the future proceeds, if the house was ever sold, would go toward maintaining its original character.

And another portion would support a local program helping single parents gain employment and training.

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you once needed someone to give you work.”

My eyes filled.

She continued.

“I couldn't save my husband.
