come over.”

“Why?”

“I received an application.”

“For the scholarship?”

“Yes.”

“Is there a problem?”

“I don't know.”

I heard paper moving.

“What name?”

She said it.

I didn't recognize it.

But Barbara did.

I drove to her house that evening.

She was sitting at the dining-room table with the application in front of her.

Richard was beside her.

Daniel had already arrived.

Barbara looked pale.

“This is her daughter's friend,” Richard explained.

I looked at the application.

“She knew your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Closely?”

Barbara nodded.

“She was with her the night she died.”

Silence filled the room.

“Why is she applying now?”

Barbara shook her head.

“I don't know.”

The applicant had requested funding for an art program.

Her portfolio was exceptional.

But there was something else in the envelope.

A letter.

Barbara had not opened it.

“You haven't read it?”

“I’m afraid.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom.”

“I know.”

I picked up the envelope.

“You don't have to open it tonight.”

Barbara stared at it.

“I think I do.”

She opened it with trembling fingers.

The letter was short.

Her daughter had written it years earlier.

Not directly to Barbara.

To the friend.

She had asked her to give it to Barbara if anything happened to her.

Barbara read it once.

Then again.

Her hands began to shake.

“What does it say?” Daniel asked.

Barbara couldn't speak.

She handed it to him.

Daniel read silently.

Then he passed it to me.

The letter did not blame Barbara.

That was the surprising part.

Her daughter wrote that she had been angry.

She had wanted her mother's approval.

But she had never stopped loving her.

At the end, she had written that she hoped one day Barbara would understand that she had never needed permission to become herself.

Barbara covered her face.

“I didn't know.”

“No,” Richard said gently.

“You didn't.”

She cried.

Not because the letter accused her.

Because it didn't.

The forgiveness was harder to bear.

The applicant was invited to dinner.

Her name was Natalie.

She arrived nervous.

Barbara stood when she entered.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Then Natalie said, “You look exactly the same.”

Barbara smiled sadly.

“I don't feel the same.”

Natalie sat.

She explained that she had promised herself she would never contact Barbara.

Until she saw the scholarship.

“It was named after her.”

“Yes.”

“I knew you'd changed.”

Barbara looked surprised.

“How?”

“Because she would have wanted you to.”

The words struck Barbara deeply.

Natalie explained that she had kept the letter for years.

She hadn't known when the right moment would come.

“I think this is the right moment,” she said.

Barbara nodded.

“Thank you.”

Natalie looked at me.

“You're Emily.”

“Yes.”

“She talked about you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“In the letter.”

I looked at Barbara.

She hadn't told me.

Natalie smiled.

“She mentioned that she hoped someday her mother would meet someone who would challenge her.”

Barbara laughed through tears.

“That sounds like her.”

Natalie nodded.

“She said you might be stubborn enough.”

I laughed.

“That sounds accurate.”

The tension broke.

We ate dinner.

Natalie talked about the accident.

Not the details.

The aftermath.

She described Barbara's daughter as fearless.

Stubborn.

Funny.

Impatient.

She sounded remarkably familiar.

Barbara listened to every word.

She didn't interrupt.

She didn't defend herself.

She simply listened.

After dinner, Natalie gave Barbara a small sketchbook.

“She carried this everywhere.”

Barbara held it carefully.

Inside were drawings.

Pages and pages of them.

On the last page was a drawing of a woman standing in a garden.

Underneath were three words.

Someday, you'll understand.

Barbara closed the book.

“I think I do now.”

Natalie smiled.

“I think she would be glad.”

After Natalie left, Barbara sat alone in the garden.

I joined her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

I sat beside her.

“But I will be.”

She looked at me.

“She was waiting for me to understand.”

“Maybe.”

“I spent years thinking she rejected me.”

“Maybe she was simply waiting for you to hear her.”

Barbara nodded.

“I wish I'd listened sooner.”

“So do I.”

She smiled faintly.

“You don't have to make everything sound better.”

“I wasn't.”

“I know.”

We sat quietly.

Then Barbara said something unexpected.

“I used to think the worst thing that could happen was losing control.”

I looked at her.

“Now?”

“Now I think the worst thing is believing you have control when you don't.”

I nodded.

That was perhaps the most honest thing she had ever said.

The scholarship continued.

Natalie received funding.

She became a successful artist.

Barbara attended every exhibition she could.

She kept the sketchbook.

The cookbook remained on her kitchen shelf.

Two reminders.

One of the woman she had been.

One of the daughter she had lost.

And somehow, both became part of the woman she was becoming.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Truth Barbara Had Been Carrying
