Nobody paid attention to the woman standing in front of a row of metal lockers holding an old brass key.

I found Locker 214.

The lock opened easily.

Inside was a narrow wooden box.

Nothing else.

I lifted it out.

The box was heavier than it looked.

I carried it to a quiet bench near the far end of the station and opened the lid.

Inside were three things.

A small notebook.

A sealed envelope.

And a stack of photographs.

The first photograph showed my grandfather standing beside a much younger Adrian.

I stopped.

I had never seen it.

Adrian was perhaps twenty-eight.

My grandfather was smiling.

Adrian wasn't.

He was looking directly at the camera with an expression I remembered from our marriage.

Ambitious.

Controlled.

Certain.

I turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

Three years before I met him.

I stared at it.

Why had Adrian met my grandfather before I knew him?

I opened the notebook.

The first page contained my grandfather's handwriting.

Adrian Hollis approached me regarding transportation expansion.

I kept reading.

He is intelligent, persuasive, and unusually interested in the structure of the family trust.

My grandfather had apparently refused to give him access.

The next pages contained notes from several meetings.

Adrian had presented business plans.

He had proposed a transportation company.

He had asked about investment.

But there was something else.

He had asked what would happen to the trust if my grandfather died.

My hand went cold.

This wasn't a coincidence.

Adrian hadn't discovered my family's money after we married.

He had known about it before.

I turned another page.

My grandfather had written a warning.

If Evelyn becomes involved with him, she must understand that his interest may not be entirely personal.

I closed my eyes.

For twelve years, I had wondered why Adrian had pursued me so quickly.

We met at a charity dinner.

He remembered details about my grandfather.

He knew about my childhood.

He knew the family business.

At the time, I thought he had simply done his research.

Now I understood.

He had researched my inheritance.

I opened the sealed envelope.

Inside were copies of correspondence between my grandfather and Richard Vale.

One letter mentioned Adrian by name.

Another mentioned a proposed trust structure.

Then I found a document dated two years before my marriage.

It was an agreement establishing the initial capitalization structure for Hollis Transit.

My grandfather had planned everything carefully.

The trust would provide capital.

Adrian would manage operations.

I would retain controlling ownership.

The arrangement was explicit.

Adrian would never have sole authority over the company.

I read the final page.

There was one condition.

If Adrian ever attempted to remove the trust's controlling interest without authorization, the entire arrangement would trigger a protective clause allowing the trust to reclaim specified assets and terminate his management authority.

I sat very still.

That clause could change everything.

I photographed every page.

Then I heard footsteps.

I looked up.

A man stood several yards away.

I recognized him.

One of Adrian's attorneys.

Victor Hale.

He wasn't supposed to know I was there.

He approached slowly.

“Mrs. Lane.”

I closed the box.

“What are you doing here?”

“Looking for you.”

“How did you know?”

He glanced at the box.

“You opened it.”

I stood.

“You knew about this.”

Victor's expression tightened.

“I knew there were old trust records.”

“Did you know Adrian had met my grandfather before we married?”

“Yes.”

The answer shocked me.

“You knew?”

“I learned it recently.”

“Did Adrian tell you?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Victor hesitated.

“Richard Vale.”

I stared at him.

“Before he died, Richard contacted me.”

“Why?”

“He believed Adrian had been preparing to challenge the trust.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I represented Adrian.”

I understood.

Professional duty.

But I also understood something else.

Victor wasn't acting like a man who wanted to win anymore.

He looked tired.

“You should know something,” he said.

“What?”

“Adrian has been moving assets.”

I already knew.

“Since the judge's order?”

“No.”

“Before?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

Victor lowered his voice.

“Some into the offshore accounts. Some into properties held by related companies. And some into personal accounts.”

“Why?”

“Because he expected the divorce to happen.”

I stared at him.

He had prepared for the divorce long before he filed.

“How long has he been planning this?”

“Possibly two years.”

That meant Paige wasn't the beginning.

She was part of the preparation.

Victor continued.

“There is another issue.”

I waited.

“The prenup.”

“What about it?”

“The copy Adrian submitted to the court may not be the complete version.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Victor looked around.

“There was an amendment.”

“To the prenup?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“I don't know.”

“Who has it?”

“I believe Adrian does.”

“Why would he hide an amendment?”

“Because it benefits you.”

I almost laughed.

After everything, the most important document might be one Adrian had deliberately kept from his own attorneys.

“What does it say?”

Victor shook his head.

“I haven't seen the final version.”

“But you know it exists.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I drafted part of it.”

I stared at him.

“You drafted my prenup?”

“I was junior counsel at the time.”

“And you never told me?”

“I didn't remember until I reviewed the old files.”

“What does the amendment do?”

Victor looked at the wooden box.

“It limits Adrian's control over any company funded through the Lane Family Trust.”

I understood immediately.

The prenup wasn't designed to protect Adrian's empire.

The amendment was designed to protect my inheritance.

If Adrian had hidden it, his entire argument in court had been built on an incomplete document.

I closed the box.

“Where can I find the original?”

Victor hesitated.

“His private office.”

“That's not exactly easy to access.”

“No.”

He gave me a small key.

I stared at it.

“What is this?”

“His old document safe.”

“You're giving me access to your client's office?”

“I am giving you a way to verify whether he has destroyed something.”

I looked at him.

“Why are you helping me?”

Victor's expression hardened.

“Because I don't represent fraud.”

Then he walked away.

I returned home and called Mara.

She arrived within an hour.

When I showed her the documents, she sat silently for nearly five minutes.

“This is significant.”

“How significant?”

“It could completely change the property analysis.”

“And the prenup?”

“If Victor is correct, Adrian presented an incomplete agreement to the court.”

“Can that invalidate the entire prenup?”

“Not automatically.”

“But?”

“But it destroys the credibility of the person relying on it.”

I looked at the wooden box.

“There is more.”

I showed her the photograph.

Mara studied it.

“Adrian knew your grandfather.”

“Before I met him.”

“That matters.”

“Why?”

“Because if we can establish that he pursued you partly because of the trust, we may have a motive for everything that followed.”

I looked at my grandfather's notes.

Adrian had known.

He had known about the money.

He had known about the structure.

He had known I controlled the company.

And yet he had spent twelve years introducing me as an unemployed wife.

It wasn't merely insulting.

It was strategic.

If everyone believed I had contributed nothing, nobody would question why I owned anything.

That evening, I went to Adrian's office.

The building was nearly empty.

I used the key Victor had given me.

The safe was behind a framed photograph of Adrian shaking hands with a governor.

Inside were contracts.

Old tax records.

Property deeds.

And finally, a thin blue folder.

My prenup.

I opened it.

The version submitted to court was missing six pages.

The amendment was inside.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

The document stated that any business funded substantially by the Lane Family Trust remained subject to the trust's controlling provisions regardless of managerial changes, marital status, or subsequent increases in valuation.

There was another clause.

If either spouse attempted to conceal, transfer, or encumber trust-controlled assets without authorization, the conduct could trigger immediate restoration of the trust's rights.

I photographed the pages.

Then I heard the office door open.

Adrian walked in.

He stopped when he saw me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at the blue folder in my hand.

His face changed.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

He closed the door.

“You don't understand what that document means.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You don't know why I did any of this.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked away.

For the first time since our divorce began, Adrian seemed unable to find the right words.

Finally, he said, “Your grandfather never trusted me.”

“He was right.”

His face tightened.

“He knew what I could become.”

“You became worse.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I became what he refused to let me become.”

I held the amendment.

“You stole my company.”

“I built it.”

“You tried to steal control.”

“I protected it.”

“From whom?”

He didn't answer.

I realized then that his story still had one missing piece.

He wasn't looking at me with the anger of a man caught stealing.

He was looking at me like a man who believed he had been protecting himself from something.

“What are you afraid of?” I asked.

His expression changed.

“Not me.”

“Then who?”

He walked toward the window.

“My grandfather.”

I froze.

Adrian turned.

“Your grandfather didn't build the trust because he wanted to leave you a fortune.”

“What did he want?”

“He wanted to keep something buried.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because if you find it, you won't be able to pretend this was ever just a marriage.”

He left the room.

I stood alone with the amendment in my hand.

The company.

The offshore money.

The forged signature.

My grandfather's warnings.

Adrian's secret meetings with him.

None of it was separate.

It was one story.

And somewhere inside the trust records was the part nobody had told me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Adrian Finally Admitted My Grandfather Had Been Afraid of Him, but His Next
