away.

I opened the folder.

"There is something else."

She froze.

I pulled out the final document.

"Why did you tell Evan I was hiding debt?"

Her face changed.

My father looked at her.

"Claire—"

"No."

I kept my eyes on her.

"Why?"

She was silent.

Then she whispered, "Because I needed him to leave you."

I stopped breathing.

My mother looked down at the counter.

"He was becoming controlling."

"So you destroyed my marriage?"

"He was going to isolate you."

"You don't get to satisfied.

Powerful.

Vindicated.

Instead, I felt tired.

"So why did you humiliate me tonight?"

She wiped her face.

"I thought nodded.

"Your first marriage."

I stood.

"My first marriage was a mistake because you interfered with it."

She didn't answer.

I picked up my purse.

My father stood.

"Claire, please."

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"How long?"

He hesitated.

"Since the beginning."

My chest tightened.

"Then you lied to me too."

"I didn't know how to stop her."

"You could have told me."

"I was afraid."

I shook my head.

"You both kept telling me I was weak."

Neither spoke.

"You made me believe I couldn't finish medical school."

My mother whispered, "You were never weak."

"Then why did you treat me like I was?"

She couldn't answer.

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, my mother said my name.

I stopped.

"I did one more thing."

I turned slowly.

She looked terrified.

"What?"

She pointed toward the folder.

"There's another account."

I stared at her.

"What account?"

"The money that remained."

My father stood abruptly.

"Don't."

My mother ignored him.

"It's in your name."

I stepped back toward the kitchen.

"How much?"

She gave me the number.

I couldn't speak.

It was enough to change my life.

Enough to pay for medical school again.

Enough to explain why she had been so desperate to keep me from finding it.

"Where is it?"

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

"Your father knows."

I turned.

He looked devastated.

"Where?"

He lowered his head.

"At the bank."

"Whose name?"

He didn't answer.

My mother did.

"Yours."

I stared at her.

"For years?"

She nodded.

"Why didn't you use it?"

"Because it was never mine."

My mother whispered, "It was always yours."

I laughed softly.

The cruelty of it almost made me dizzy.

She had spent years telling me I had failed.

Meanwhile, the money that could have allowed me to continue was sitting untouched in an account she had hidden from me.

I picked up the folder.

"Tomorrow."

My father looked at me.

"Tomorrow what?"

"I go to the bank."

My mother began crying again.

I opened the door.

"And after that, I'm going to find out whether the life you took from me is still waiting somewhere."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Morning
