I owe you the truth.

I almost laughed.

Everyone seemed to owe me the truth now.

I left the bank with the documents.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

The pavement was still wet.

Cars moved slowly through the intersection.

I stood beneath the awning and looked at the city.

For years, I had thought my life had simply gone wrong.

Now I understood that some of those wrong turns had been deliberately placed in front of me.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Daniel.

I answered.

"Hello."

"Are you okay?"

"No."

He was quiet.

"Did you find the account?"

"I found three."

He exhaled.

"Three?"

"Yes."

I heard him sit down.

"What else?"

I told him.

When I finished, he said nothing for several seconds.

Then he asked, "Do you want me to come get you?"

I looked across the street.

"No."

"Claire."

"I need to do one more thing."

"What?"

"I need to go back to my parents."

Daniel's voice became careful.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

He waited.

"But I'm going anyway."

When I arrived at their house, my father was waiting on the porch.

He looked at the envelope in my hand.

"You went to the bank."

"Yes."

He nodded.

"I knew you would."

"Did you?"

He looked away.

"Your mother told me."

I walked up the steps.

"Why did you sign those papers?"

He closed his eyes.

"Because I thought I was saving the family."

"Everyone keeps using that word."

He looked at me.

"What word?"

"Saving."

I held up the documents.

"You weren't saving me."

"I know."

"You weren't saving Mom."

"I know."

"You weren't saving our family."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

I stepped closer.

"Then what were you saving?"

He had no answer.

I walked past him.

My mother was sitting in the living room.

She looked at the papers in my hand.

"You're angry."

"I'm beyond angry."

She nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

"No."

I placed the envelope on the coffee table.

"It's not fair."

She looked confused.

"Because fair would mean you had the right to make these choices."

I pointed at the documents.

"You didn't."

She looked at my father.

He said nothing.

I sat down across from her.

"I want the complete account history."

She swallowed.

"You have it."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I have the bank records."

I leaned forward.

"I want the truth."

She looked frightened.

"About what?"

"About the day I left medical school."

She went pale.

"I know about the money."

She closed her eyes.

"I know about Evan."

Her breathing changed.

"I know about Dad wanting to leave."

She opened her eyes.

"But I don't know why you were so determined to make me believe I was a failure."

She stared at me.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

"Because your grandmother told me to."

I froze.

"My grandmother?"

She nodded.

"Your grandmother believed you were becoming too independent."

I stared at her.

"What does that have to do with medical school?"

"Everything."

My mother leaned back.

"She believed that if you became a doctor, you would leave the family permanently."

I laughed in disbelief.

"That is insane."

"She was convinced."

"And you listened to her?"

"I was raised to listen."

I looked at my father.

"And you?"

He shook his head.

"I didn't agree."

"But you signed."

He looked down.

"Yes."

My mother continued.

"Your grandmother threatened to cut us off."

I blinked.

"From what?"

"The family business."

Silence filled the room.

My father finally spoke.

"Your grandfather had left the company to both of us."

My mother nodded.

"Your grandmother controlled the shares."

"And she threatened you because I wanted to become a doctor?"

"She said medicine would make you forget where you came from."

I stared at her.

"So you destroyed my career to keep an inheritance."

My mother began crying.

"I thought I could repair it later."

"You had years."

"I was afraid."

"You were afraid of losing money."

"No."

She looked at me.

"I was afraid of losing everything."

I stood.

"You did."

She looked up.

"I lost my career."

I pointed at myself.

"I lost my marriage."

Then I pointed toward the hallway.

"I lost years believing there was something wrong with me."

My voice broke.

"And you want me to believe this was love?"

My mother couldn't answer.

I turned toward the door.

Then my father spoke.

"Claire."

I stopped.

"There is one more thing."

I didn't turn around.

"What?"

"The reason your grandmother wanted you out of medicine wasn't only because of the company."

I slowly looked back.

My father was crying.

"She knew something about your first husband."

My blood went cold.

"What did she know?"

He looked at my mother.

My mother whispered, "Your grandmother knew Evan had been taking money from you."

I stared at them.

"What?"

"She knew before you did."

My father nodded.

"And she knew why."

The room seemed to disappear.

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Why?"

My mother looked at me.

"Because Evan wasn't the man you thought he was."

I could barely breathe.

My father continued.

"Your grandmother helped him."

I stared at him.

"Helped him do what?"

He looked down.

"Get access to your finances."

My mother reached for the papers.

I stepped back.

"No."

She froze.

"Claire—"

"No."

I picked up the envelope.

"I don't want another piece of the truth tonight."

I walked to the door.

Behind me, my father said, "You need to know."

I opened it.

"I will."

Then I looked back at both of them.

"But I'm going to hear it from someone who can prove it."

My phone was already in my hand.

There was one person I needed to call.

Daniel.

Because the story my mother had told me for years was finally collapsing.

And whatever came next would determine whether I could reclaim my past—or whether the people who had controlled it still had one last weapon left.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: Daniel Opened the Records My Family Had Buried, and the First Name I Saw
