You believed evidence was enough."

I gave a bitter smile.

"I was young."

"You were right."

I looked at him.

He continued.

"The company changed the methodology after your findings appeared."

"Why?"

"To make the results appear less significant."

I felt cold.

"And my mother knew?"

"Your mother knew there was a problem."

"What about my father?"

"Your father knew your grandmother was furious."

I closed the binder.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because the university received pressure."

"From the company?"

"Yes."

"And my parents?"

"Your mother came to my office."

I looked at him.

"When?"

"The day before your financial aid was withdrawn."

Everything inside me seemed to stop.

"What did she say?"

Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.

"She asked me to remove you from the research team."

"Why?"

"She said you were emotionally unstable."

I laughed.

"Of course she did."

"She also said your marriage was failing."

I looked down.

"My marriage hadn't failed yet."

"Not officially."

I looked up.

"What did you tell her?"

"I refused."

"What happened?"

"She threatened to have the university investigated."

"For what?"

"She claimed your research had been improperly obtained."

I stared at him.

"That was a lie."

"I know."

"Did the university believe her?"

"Enough to make me cautious."

I turned another page.

There was a letter.

My mother's signature.

She had written that I was voluntarily withdrawing from the program.

I stared at the words.

"I never signed this."

"I know."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Where did this come from?"

"Your mother gave it to the university."

My hands began shaking.

"Then why wasn't I expelled?"

"Because I refused to certify it."

Dr. Harris reached into the binder.

He removed another page.

"This is the document that stopped her."

I read it.

He had written a formal statement saying that Claire Bennett had not voluntarily withdrawn from the research program and that he had reason to believe external pressure was being applied to her.

My eyes filled.

"You wrote this."

"Yes."

"Why didn't I ever see it?"

"Because it disappeared."

I looked at him.

"Who took it?"

He hesitated.

"Your father."

I closed my eyes.

My father again.

Always somewhere nearby.

Always frightened.

Always choosing silence.

Dr. Harris continued.

"I confronted him."

"What did he say?"

"He begged me not to destroy your family."

I shook my head.

"They destroyed it themselves."

He nodded sadly.

"I know."

I looked at the binder.

"What happened to the trial?"

"It continued."

"Did anyone get hurt?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

I felt sick.

"How many?"

"Enough that the company eventually settled privately."

"Privately?"

"Families were compensated under confidentiality agreements."

I stared at him.

"And my grandmother?"

"She made a fortune."

The room seemed to tilt.

I closed the binder.

"Why tell me now?"

"Because I am old enough to know that silence doesn't become innocence with time."

He reached into his briefcase again.

This time he removed an envelope.

"Your mother gave me this years ago."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"She told me to keep it."

"What's inside?"

"I never opened it."

I took it.

My name was written on the front.

The handwriting was my mother's.

I turned it over.

The seal was intact.

"Why give it to me now?"

"Because after your engagement party, I received a call from your father."

I looked up.

"He said you finally knew."

I stared at the envelope.

"What is it?"

Dr. Harris shook his head.

"I don't know."

I put it in my bag.

Daniel touched my shoulder.

"Claire."

I looked at him.

"We should leave."

I nodded.

Outside the café, the rain had stopped.

We stood beneath the awning.

I held the envelope.

"Do you think I should open it?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I think you've spent enough years letting other people decide what you're allowed to know."

I opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

And one photograph.

The photograph showed my mother standing beside my grandmother outside a hospital.

Between them stood Evan.

My first husband.

I stared at the image.

The date was printed on the back.

It was taken two weeks before I met him.

I looked at Daniel.

"Evan knew my family before I ever met him."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Yes."

I turned the photograph over again.

There was a handwritten sentence beneath the date.

I didn't choose him for you.

Your grandmother did.

My knees nearly gave way.

For years I had thought my first marriage had been an ordinary mistake.

Now I was looking at proof that it had been arranged around me long before I understood what was happening.

And suddenly, the question wasn't why my mother had destroyed my marriage.

It was why my family had wanted Evan in my life in the first place.
