nodded.

“And if I come back?”

“I'll decide then.”

For the first time, Vanessa smiled without trying to perform for anyone.

“Okay.”

After the meeting, Clara walked outside.

The afternoon sun had finally come through the clouds.

She stood beside me.

“I think I'm done.”

“With what?”

“Looking for who I was supposed to be.”

I waited.

“I know who I am.”

I smiled.

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“Your daughter.”

I pulled her into my arms.

She laughed.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Don't make this weird.”

I laughed.

“I won't.”

But as we walked toward the car, my phone rang.

It was the attorney.

“Betty, I have one final document.”

I stopped.

“What is it?”

“Your mother filed a legal transfer fifteen years ago.”

I looked at Clara.

“What kind of transfer?”

“Full guardianship.”

My heart stopped.

“Of Clara?”

“Yes.”

“From whom?”

The attorney hesitated.

“Vanessa.”

I looked at Clara.

“So Vanessa did legally give her to me.”

“Yes.”

“Voluntarily?”

“That is what the document says.”

I closed my eyes.

For fifteen years, I had believed I had been forced to take Clara.

The document suggested something more complicated.

Vanessa had signed.

She had chosen it.

Maybe under pressure.

Maybe out of fear.

But she had signed.

The attorney added one final sentence.

“There is a handwritten statement attached.”

“What does it say?”

He read it aloud.

“I give my daughter to Betty because I believe Betty will love her enough to survive what I could not.”

I couldn't speak.

Clara took my hand.

“What did it say?”

I looked at her.

And for the first time in fifteen years, I understood that the truth was not a single story.

It was a collection of choices made by frightened people.

Some cruel.

Some cowardly.

Some loving.

And one choice that had changed everything.

Mine.

I had taken the baby.

I had left.

I had raised her.

And now, finally, she was old enough to choose where the story went next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Document Vanessa Signed Changed the Meaning of Fifteen Years, but Clara
