October.

There was no return address.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Clara sat beside me when I opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Vanessa holding Clara in the hospital.

Not for a second.

Not by accident.

She was sitting in the chair beside the bed, holding the baby against her chest.

Her face was turned downward.

She looked exhausted.

But she was smiling.

Clara stared at the photograph.

“She looks happy.”

“She does.”

“Why did she never show this to me?”

“I don't know.”

There was a note on the back.

I kept this because I wanted someone to remember that she did love her.

I looked at Clara.

She wiped her eyes.

“Do you believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Even after everything?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because people can love someone and still hurt them.”

She looked at the photograph again.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“No.”

She turned it over.

There was another line written beneath Diane's first sentence.

I wish I had let her choose.

Clara was silent.

Then she asked,

“Do you think Grandma regretted it?”

“Yes.”

“Do you think she regretted what she did to me?”

I thought carefully.

“I think she regretted what it became.”

Clara nodded.

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

We put the photograph into the box.

Then Clara asked me something unexpected.

“Can we see Grandma?”

I stared at her.

“She lives alone now.”

“I know.”

“She may not want to see Diane.

I understood.

When we arrived, Diane opened the door.

She looked surprised.

“Clara.”

“Hi.”

Diane's eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Why are you here?”

“I wanted to ask you something.”

Diane stepped aside.

They sat in the living room.

I remained nearby.

Clara placed the photograph on the table.

“Why did you keep this?”

Diane looked at it.

“Because it was the only proof I had that Vanessa wasn't heartless.”

Clara frowned.

“She loved me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you take me away?”

Diane looked down.

“Because I thought I knew better.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“Did you ever?”

Diane gave a small, sad smile.

“Not as much as I believed.”

Clara leaned forward.

“Did you know Mom wanted to come after me?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you stop her?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing control.”

Clara looked at her.

“At least you're honest now.”

Diane nodded.

“I should have been honest then.”

“You should have been.”

She looked at me.

“I hurt you too.”

I didn't answer.

“You were my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“I treated you like a tool.”

“Yes.”

“I am sorry.”

The words were simple.

I had waited fifteen years to hear them.

They did not heal anything.

But they settled somewhere inside me.

“Thank you,” I said.

Diane looked at Clara.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

Clara shook her head.

“You shouldn't.”

Diane nodded.

“But I hope one day you can remember that I did love you.”

Clara looked at her.

“I believe you.”

Diane began crying.

“But love isn't enough.”

“No.”

Clara stood.

“That's what I learned.”

We left.

In the car, my father was quiet.

Then he said,

“Your mother finally understands.”

I looked at him.

“Understanding doesn't erase it.”

“No.”

“Neither does apology.”

“No.”

“But it matters.”

I nodded.

“It does.”

That evening, Vanessa called.

Clara answered.

They spoke for twenty minutes.

I didn't listen.

When she came downstairs, she looked thoughtful.

“She wants to meet for Thanksgiving.”

“Do you want to?”

“I think so.”

“Then go.”

“You're coming.”

“I'll be nearby.”

She smiled.

“Okay.”

Thanksgiving came.

We met at a small restaurant.

Vanessa arrived early.

She looked nervous.

Clara sat across from her.

For the first ten minutes, they talked about ordinary things.

School.

Work.

Food.

Then Clara asked,

“Did you ever love Dad?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Yes.”

“Do you still?”

She thought about it.

“I care about him.”

“That's not what I asked.”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't.”

Clara nodded.

“That's okay.”

They talked about Cole.

About Daniel.

About Diane.

About the wedding.

About the recording.

Eventually, Vanessa said,

“I want to tell you something I never said before.”

Clara waited.

“When you were born, I asked the nurse to give you back to me.”

Clara's eyes filled.

“Mom came in.”

She continued.

“She told me if I held you too long, I wouldn't be able to let go.”

“What did you do?”

“I held you anyway.”

Clara's lips trembled.

“How long?”

“About an hour.”

“Then what?”

“I gave you to her.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Clara nodded.

“I know.”

Vanessa reached across the table.

Clara let her take her hand.

“I wish I had been brave.”

Clara looked at her.

“I wish you had too.”

They sat quietly.

Then Vanessa asked,

“Can I call you?”

“Once a month.”

Vanessa smiled.

“I'll take it.”

“And no cameras.”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“No cameras.”

“No social media.”

“Agreed.”

“No talking about me to strangers.”

“Never.”

Clara smiled.

“Then maybe we can try.”

Vanessa squeezed her hand.

“Maybe.”

That night, Clara came home with me.

She put her coat away.

Then she stood in the kitchen.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“I'm glad you took me.”

I looked at her.

“I didn't take you.”

She smiled.

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

She hugged me.

I held her tightly.

For fifteen years, I had believed that the hardest day of my life was the day I left that hospital.

I was wrong.

The hardest day had been every day afterward when I wondered whether I had stolen something from someone else.

Now I understood.

I had not stolen Clara.

I had rescued her from a decision made by adults who were too afraid to live honestly.

And eventually, Clara had rescued me from the guilt of believing otherwise.

A week later, Daniel sent an email.

He said he had found another photograph.

It showed Vanessa and him before Clara was born.

They were young.

Smiling.

Unaware of what was coming.

He offered to send it.

Clara said yes.

When she received it, she looked at it for a long time.

Then she placed it beside the photograph of Vanessa holding her.

Two moments.

Before.

After.

She didn't tear either one apart.

She kept them together.

“I think I finally understand,” she said.

“What?”

“I don't have to choose which version is real.”

I smiled.

“They're both real.”

She nodded.

“I was loved.”

“Yes.”

“I was hurt.”

“Yes.”

“I was wanted.”

“Yes.”

“I was abandoned.”

“Yes.”

She took a breath.

“And I was raised.”

I squeezed her shoulder.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“That last one is the one I want to remember most.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Fifteen Years After the Hospital Door Closed Behind Her, Betty Finally
