Eight months old, tiny for her age, and completely unconcerned with the complicated history she had somehow inherited before she could even say a word.

She grabbed at the ribbon beside her and squealed.

I smiled despite myself.

“You’re going to be trouble today,” I whispered.

Lily answered with another delighted noise.

From downstairs came the sound of Evan closing the front door. A moment later, his footsteps crossed the hallway, followed by the familiar scrape of the diaper bag being set down.

“You ready?” he called.

“Almost.”

I looked at myself in the mirror.

Then at Lily.

Then back at myself.

There was no reason to feel afraid. Christmas was supposed to be one afternoon. Dinner. Presents. Family photographs. A few hours of noise before everyone went home.

I had survived worse.

But my stomach had been tight since breakfast.

My mother had always had a talent for turning ordinary moments into examinations. She could compliment a dress while making the person wearing it feel foolish. She could ask whether someone was tired and somehow make it sound like an accusation. She could express concern so precisely that the person receiving it spent the rest of the day wondering what they had done wrong.

Still, I had hoped Lily would change her.

That was the part I hated admitting.

I had spent months imagining the moment my mother became a grandmother and something inside her softened.

Lily had been born six weeks early. The first weeks of her life had been spent under hospital lights, surrounded by monitors and nurses who spoke quietly even when they were trying to reassure me.

I remembered every alarm.

Every feeding chart.

Every night I woke convinced something had gone wrong.

And through all of it, my mother had found things to criticize.

I should have been calmer.

I should have eaten more.

I should have recognized the warning signs sooner.

She never said directly that Lily’s early birth was my fault.

She didn’t have to.

The suggestion lived between her words.

After Lily came home, her pediatrician told us repeatedly that she was doing well. Small, yes. But healthy. Alert. Growing steadily.

I repeated those words to myself whenever my mother’s voice returned in my head.

Healthy.

Growing.

Fine.

I fastened the final button on Lily’s dress.

Evan appeared in the doorway carrying two wrapped presents under one arm.

“You’ve been quiet.”

“Just thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

I laughed.

He walked over and kissed Lily’s forehead.

“You look beautiful, peanut.”

She reached for his face.

He caught her hand.

“Okay. We have to go before your grandmother starts calling every five minutes asking where we are.”

I picked up the diaper bag.

“She already called twice.”

“Of course she did.”

He looked at me.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

He didn’t answer.

That was Evan’s way of telling me he knew I wasn’t.

Instead, he took the diaper bag from my shoulder.

“Let’s just go.”

My parents’ house looked exactly as it always did in December.

White lights followed the roofline. A wreath hung perfectly centered on the front door. Through the windows, I could see the Christmas tree glowing beside the fireplace.

My mother believed holiday decorations were evidence of family stability.

If the stockings were straight, the table was set, and everyone smiled for photographs, then everything was apparently fine.

The driveway was crowded when we arrived.

My brother Mark’s SUV sat beside my aunt’s sedan. Someone had parked half on the grass.

Lily woke when I opened the back door.

Her eyes widened at the lights.

“Look,” I whispered. “Grandma’s house.”

She smiled.

For a second, my anxiety disappeared.

Then the front door opened.

Mom stepped onto the porch wearing a cream sweater and gold earrings.

“There you are!”

She hurried toward us.

Her smile was wide.

Her eyes went immediately to Lily.

“Let me see my granddaughter.”

I handed Lily over.

Mom kissed her cheek and then held her at arm’s length.

“She is so little.”

I waited.

“She has always been little,” I said.

Mom glanced at me.

“I know.”

Her smile returned.

“I suppose that’s still something to worry about.”

I felt Evan’s hand touch the small of my back.

“She’s doing great,” he said.

Mom gave him a polite smile.

“I’m sure.”

Inside, the house was warm and crowded.

Someone had cinnamon candles burning. The kitchen smelled of turkey, roasted vegetables, and baked bread. Children ran through the hallway while adults called greetings from different rooms.

For nearly an hour, nothing happened.

Jenna, Mark’s wife, took Lily for a few minutes and made her laugh.

My aunt complimented the dress.

My father asked Evan about work.

Mom moved constantly between the kitchen and dining room, correcting plates and rearranging serving dishes.

I started to relax.

Maybe I had been wrong.

Maybe today really would be different.

Then Mom returned from the kitchen carrying a tray.

She stopped beside me.

Her eyes settled on Lily.

“You really should have put something warmer underneath that dress.”

I glanced down.

“She has a blanket.”

Mom touched Lily’s arm.

“She’s so thin.”

“She was born early.”

“I know.”

Mom looked at me.

“I just don’t understand why you don’t seem more concerned.”

The room became quieter.

Not completely silent.

But quieter.

I smiled tightly.

“Her doctor isn’t concerned.”

“Doctors aren’t mothers.”

Evan’s expression changed.

I could feel it without looking at him.

Mom continued.

“I’m not criticizing you.
