A medication question. A blood draw. A patient who needed help getting out of bed. A doctor asking for an update while someone else was waiting for a discharge instruction.

That was the strange thing about emergencies.

They rarely look dramatic from the inside.

Most of the time, they look like paperwork, fluorescent lights, ringing phones, and people asking you to do three things at once.

I was halfway down the hallway when my phone buzzed.

I checked it quickly.

Owen.

Greta’s checked in. She’s excited. Everything went smoothly.

I stopped walking.

I read it twice.

Then I smiled.

The knot I had been carrying since leaving the house loosened.

I typed back.

Thank you. Seriously.

His response came almost immediately.

No problem. Go save the world.

I laughed quietly.

That was Owen.

He always made difficult things sound manageable.

I put my phone away and returned to work.

For the next hour, I barely thought about camp.

That was unusual for me.

Normally, I would have been checking the weather, wondering whether Greta had eaten breakfast, worrying about whether she had remembered her toothbrush. But that message had given me something I badly needed.

Permission to stop worrying.

At least temporarily.

Around eleven-thirty, I realized I hadn't checked my phone in almost two hours.

I stepped into an empty supply room and looked at the screen.

Nothing from Greta.

Nothing from Owen.

I told myself that was good.

Camp had probably taken their phones. Activities had started. Maybe Greta was already meeting the other kids.

I pictured her canoeing.

The image made me smile.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered automatically.

“Hello?”

“Hi. Is this Greta’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“This is Karen from the camp.”

Something inside me tightened.

“Is Greta okay?”

“Yes. She’s safe.”

Karen paused.

That pause changed everything.

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What happened?”

“I need you to come here as soon as you can.”

I straightened.

“Why?”

Another pause.

“I think it would be better if we talked in person.”

My stomach dropped.

“Karen, you're frightening me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Is Greta hurt?”

“No.”

“Did something happen to another child?”

“That’s not exactly what this is about.”

“Then what is it about?”

Karen exhaled.

“It’s about the man who brought her.”

For a moment, I thought I had misheard her.

“The man?”

“Owen.”

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the alternative was too frightening to process.

“Owen?”

“Yes.”

“There has to be some mistake.”

“He is here.”

“I know he’s there. He brought my daughter.”

Karen's voice remained careful.

“I really need you to come.”

My hands had gone cold.

“What did he do?”

“I don’t want to discuss it over the phone.”

That answer was worse than any answer she could have given me.

I walked out of the supply room.

A nurse passing by asked if I was okay.

I barely heard her.

“Karen, I’m at work.”

“I understand.”

“I can leave.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Give me twenty minutes.”

I hung up.

For several seconds, I stood completely still.

My mind began doing what minds do when they have too little information and too much fear.

I imagined an accident.

An argument.

A misunderstanding.

Something involving a car.

Something involving Greta.

Something involving Owen.

Then I imagined something worse.

I pushed the thought away.

No.

Not Owen.

Not the man who had shown up when I needed help for years.

Not the man who knew where Greta kept her favorite books.

Not the man she trusted enough to call when she lost a tooth.

There had to be another explanation.

I told my supervisor I had a family emergency.

Then I drove.

The highway seemed longer than usual.

Every red light felt personal.

I kept thinking about Greta’s face that morning.

The way she had held onto me.

The way she had said she could stay home.

The way she had answered every question with a small, carefully controlled “nothing.”

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

I should have asked.

That thought followed me all the way to the camp.

When I finally pulled into the parking lot, I could see children moving between buildings.

Some carried life jackets.

Others dragged bags.

A counselor was laughing near the dining hall.

Everything looked ordinary.

That almost made it worse.

Karen was waiting near the main building.

She was taller than I expected, wearing a staff lanyard and an expression that immediately told me this was not going to be a casual conversation.

“Are you Greta’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Karen.”

“I know.”

She nodded.

“Come with me.”

“Is my daughter hurt?”

“No.”

“Has anyone touched her?”

“No.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Karen opened the building door.

“I’ll explain inside.”

The hallway smelled faintly of sunscreen, wet towels, and old wood.

Children’s voices echoed from somewhere outside.

I followed her into an office.

The door opened.

And there they were.

Owen was sitting in a plastic chair.

Greta sat beside him.

Her eyes were red.

Her glasses had been pushed up onto her forehead.

She was twisting the bottom of her shirt around one finger until the fabric had become a tight little rope.

Owen looked up.

Then looked away.

I stopped in the doorway.

My entire body went cold.

“Greta?”

She looked at me.

I crossed the room immediately.

I dropped to my knees in front of her.

“Baby, are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“Did something happen?”

Another shake.

I touched her cheeks.

They were warm.

No cuts.

No bruises.

No obvious injury.

But she looked as if she had been crying for a long time.

I stood.

I looked at Owen.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Then I looked at Karen.

“Someone tell me what’s going on.”

Karen closed the office door.

“This morning, Owen came to me with a serious concern about Greta.”

I stared at him.

“What concern?”

Karen continued.

“He asked whether we could keep Greta separated from several girls who are also attending camp.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Why?”

Karen glanced toward Owen.

“He showed us messages.”

“What messages?”

“Messages sent to Greta.”

I felt my pulse beating in my throat.

“From whom?”

“Girls from her school.”

I turned toward Greta.

She stared at the floor.

Karen folded her hands in front of her.

“She appears to have been dealing with ongoing bullying.”

The word landed heavily.

Bullying.

I looked at Owen.

His face was tight.

“You knew?”

He nodded once.

“How long?”

“This morning.”

“Then why did the camp call me?”

Karen answered before he could.

“Because Owen asked us not to.”

I stared at her.

Then at him.

And suddenly the man I trusted completely looked like a stranger.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Messages Were Worse Than I Expected, but
