By sunset, the excitement that had carried her through the morning had worn thin. I could see it in the way she kept rubbing the edge of her sleeve between two fingers while the other campers laughed around her.

I stayed until the counselors had finished moving her belongings into the new cabin. Her bunk was against the wall beneath a narrow window overlooking the lake. There were four other girls in the room, none of whom had been involved in the messages or the photograph.

“This is okay,” Greta said.

She was trying to convince me.

I looked at the bed, then at her.

“Okay is enough for tonight.”

She gave me a faint smile.

“I'll be fine.”

I wanted to tell her I knew she would be. Instead, I pulled her into a hug and held her for a few seconds longer than usual.

“If anything feels wrong, you tell your counselor.”

She nodded.

“And me.”

Another nod.

“Even if it's midnight.”

That finally made her smile.

“Mom, you don't sleep at midnight anyway.”

“Fair point.”

Behind us, a counselor named Melissa waited patiently. She had been briefed by Karen and seemed to understand that Greta needed neither special treatment nor constant attention.

That mattered to me.

I didn't want my daughter turned into the camp's fragile child. I wanted her protected without being defined by what had happened.

Before I left, I looked at Melissa.

“If she tells you something, please believe her first and investigate second.”

Melissa nodded.

“We will.”

I turned back to Greta.

She was already arranging the little things she had packed: toothbrush, flashlight, paperback book, hair ties. The ordinary ritual steadied me.

Then she stopped.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

The question caught me off guard.

“I’m disappointed about what you did.”

Her eyes dropped.

“But I'm not disappointed that you told the truth.”

She looked up.

“Those are different things.”

She nodded slowly.

I kissed her forehead.

“Remember that.”

When I walked outside, Owen was waiting near the parking lot.

He had stayed behind.

I wasn't surprised.

“You didn't have to.”

“I know.”

We started toward our cars.

For several steps, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “She'll be okay.”

I looked at him.

“You sound certain.”

“I've seen her when she's scared.”

I stopped walking.

“What do you mean?”

Owen stopped too.

He looked uncomfortable.

“She called me last week.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Not about camp.”

“What was it about?”

He hesitated.

“She couldn't get into her house after school because she forgot her key.”

I waited.

“That was it?”

“That time.”

The wording bothered me.

“Owen.”

He rubbed the back of his neck.

“She called me a few other times.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

I felt irritation rising again.

“And you didn't tell me?”

“She wasn't asking me to keep secrets.”

“That isn't the point.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the lake.

“She talked to me because she thought you were always tired.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

I had spent years telling myself that working hard for her was the same as being available to her.

Apparently, it wasn't.

“I need to fix that,” I said.

“You don't need to quit your job.”

“I didn't say that.”

“You're going to blame yourself.”

“I probably am.”

He gave me a tired smile.

“Then don't.”

I looked at him.

“You're asking too much.”

He laughed softly.

For a moment, the tension between us eased.

Then he became serious.

“She needs to know she can tell you things before they become emergencies.”

“I know.”

“And she needs to understand that being hurt doesn't give her permission to hurt somebody else.”

“I know that too.”

He nodded.

“Then maybe today was necessary.”

I didn't like that word.

Necessary.

Nothing about the day had felt necessary.

But perhaps some lessons arrived in forms nobody would choose.

That night, I drove home alone.

Greta's room looked untouched.

Her pillow was crooked.

A pair of sneakers sat beneath the bed.

Her favorite stuffed rabbit was lying beside the window because she had decided she was too old to take it to camp.

I picked it up.

Then I put it back.

My phone buzzed.

A message from camp.

Greta had eaten dinner.

She had joined an activity.

She was safe.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then another message arrived.

Mom, the lake is really pretty.

I smiled.

I typed back.

I know.

Then deleted it.

Instead, I wrote:

Tell me everything tomorrow.

She replied almost immediately.

Okay.

I set the phone down.

For the first time all day, I let myself breathe.

The next morning, I woke before my alarm.

There was a new message.

Not from Greta.

From Karen.

We need to talk about something that happened yesterday evening.

My stomach tightened.

I called.

Karen answered quickly.

“Nothing dangerous happened,” she said before I could ask.

“That sentence is not reassuring.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

“One of the girls involved in the messages approached Greta.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What did she say?”

“She apologized.”

I blinked.

That wasn't what I expected.

“Did Greta accept?”

“She listened.”

“And?”

“She told the girl she wasn't ready to forgive her.”

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

“That's fair.”

“Yes.”

Karen paused.

“But there is something else.”

My stomach tightened again.

“What?”

“The girl asked Greta why she had sent the photograph.”

I closed my eyes.

“And what did Greta say?”

“She told her the truth.”

I waited.

“She said, ‘Because I wanted you to hurt like I did.’”

I opened my eyes.

There it was.

The sentence I had been afraid she would carry without understanding.

Revenge.

Not justice.

Not self-defense.

Revenge.

And now she had finally said it aloud.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Greta’s Attempt to Make Things Right Was Uncomfortable and Imperfect,
