welcome.”

After we hung up, I stared at the refrigerator.

There was a photograph of Greta from her fifth birthday held up by a magnet.

She was missing one front tooth.

Her smile was enormous.

I wondered how many versions of my daughter I had failed to notice because I was always looking at the version standing directly in front of me.

The child who laughed.

The child who helped.

The child who struggled.

The child who could hurt someone.

The child who could admit it.

Being her mother meant holding all of those truths at once.

That evening, Greta sent another message.

We made friendship bracelets.

I asked:

What colors?

She answered:

Mine is blue and yellow.

I smiled.

Then she sent another.

I made one for you.

My throat tightened.

I wrote:

I can't wait.

Her reply came:

Me neither.

The following morning, I received a photo.

It was her wrist.

A simple braided bracelet wrapped around it.

Blue.

Yellow.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing extraordinary.

But beneath the picture she had written:

I’m okay today.

I stared at those words.

Not I'm fine.

Not nothing.

I'm okay today.

For the first time, I realized how important that difference was.

I saved the message.

Then I called Owen.

He answered on the second ring.

“She’s okay,” I said.

“I know.”

“How?”

“She head.”

“Too late.”

We laughed.

And for the first time since the camp called, I felt the crisis beginning to loosen its grip.

But I also knew the real test would not be whether Greta could survive one difficult week.

It would be whether she could come home carrying the lesson with her.

<a
