lot was crowded when I arrived.

Parents stood beside cars.

Children ran toward them carrying bags that looked too large for their bodies.

Someone was crying.

Someone else was shouting about a missing shoe.

A counselor was trying to organize a line of campers while answering three questions at once.

It felt chaotic.

It felt ordinary.

I loved it.

I parked and got out.

For several minutes, I couldn't find Greta.

Then I saw her.

She was walking beside Melissa with her duffel bag over one shoulder.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was darker from the sun.

Her camp shirt was stained near the bottom.

She looked exhausted.

She looked happy.

I lifted one hand.

She saw me.

Her face changed instantly.

“Mom!”

She dropped the bag.

I barely had time to open my arms before she ran into me.

I held her tightly.

She smelled like sunscreen, lake water, and laundry detergent.

“You're home.”

“I know.”

“You got so big.”

“It's been two weeks.”

“I know.”

She laughed against my shoulder.

Then she pulled away.

“I have so much to tell you.”

“I have time.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the pile of bags.

“I also have a lot of stuff.”

“How much stuff?”

She pointed.

I stared.

“Greta.”

“I know.”

“You went to summer camp, not a department store.”

She laughed.

Melissa approached us.

“She had a great final week.”

I looked at Greta.

“I can see that.”

Melissa smiled.

“She also helped another camper through the canoe course.”

Greta looked embarrassed.

“It wasn't a big deal.”

“It was to her,” Melissa said.

Greta shifted her weight.

I squeezed her shoulder.

“Thank you for telling me.”

Melissa nodded.

Then she lowered her voice.

“She handled the situation with the other girls well.”

I understood immediately.

“I'm glad.”

“So am I.”

Greta glanced between us.

“Can we go home now?”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

The drive home took less than an hour.

Greta talked almost the entire way.

She described the lake.

The cabins.

The food.

The counselors.

The canoe accident.

The night hike.

A girl named Sophie who could whistle through her fingers.

A boy who had fallen into the mud during an obstacle course.

She told every story with so much detail that I kept smiling.

Then, halfway home, she became quiet.

I glanced at her.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

I smiled.

She caught herself.

“Okay.”

She corrected herself.

“I was thinking.”

“About?”

She looked out the window.

“About the first day.”

I kept my eyes on the road.

“What about it?”

“I wanted to leave.”

“I know.”

“I thought everybody hated me.”

I swallowed.

“Did it feel that way?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“But they didn't.”

“Some people treated you badly.”

“Yeah.”

“And you treated someone badly.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

We drove in silence for a while.

Then she said, “I don't want to be that person.”

My hands tightened slightly around the steering wheel.

“You don't have to be.”

“I know.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I think I was angry for so long that I thought being mean would make me feel stronger.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

She answered immediately.

“It just made me feel worse.”

I nodded.

“That's something worth remembering.”

She leaned her head against the window.

“I will.”

When we arrived home, she ran upstairs.

A minute later, she shouted.

“Mom!”

“What?”

“My room looks exactly the same!”

I laughed.

“That's generally how rooms work.”

She came back down carrying the stuffed rabbit she had left behind.

“I missed this.”

“I knew you would.”

We spent the afternoon unpacking.

Every object had a story.

The ugly mug.

The bracelets.

The painted stone.

The friendship notes.

A pressed leaf.

A camp map.

A tiny wooden paddle.

She explained every one.

Then she pulled a folded piece of paper from the bottom of her bag.

“What’s that?”

She hesitated.

“It’s for you.”

I opened it.

It was a short note.

Not from a counselor.

Not from another camper.

From Greta.

I read it twice.

She had written about being afraid.

About hiding things.

About learning that telling the truth could be difficult without making it wrong.

Then there was one sentence that made me stop.

I don't want you to find out things only when somebody calls you.

I looked at her.

She was watching me carefully.

I put the paper down.

“Come here.”

She walked into my arms.

I held her.

“You don't have to worry about making me find out.”

“I know.”

“We're going to keep talking.”

“Okay.”

“And I'm still going to make you clean your room.”

She laughed.

“That's not fair.”

“It absolutely is.”

That evening, Owen came over.

He brought dinner.

Greta ran to the door when she heard his knock.

“You're back!”

“I am.”

“Look what I got.”

She showed him everything.

He listened to every story.

When she showed him the bracelet, he held up his wrist.

He was still wearing his.

Greta smiled.

“You kept it.”

“Obviously.”

She rolled her eyes.

Then she ran upstairs to get something else.

I watched Owen watching her.

“She changed,” he said.

“Yes.”

“She looks lighter.”

I nodded.

“She is.”

He sat at the kitchen table.

“How are you?”

I thought about it.

“Better.”

“Still blaming yourself?”

“A little.”

He smiled.

“Thought so.”

I looked at him.

“She didn't need a perfect mother.”

“No.”

“She needed me to notice.”

“Yes.”

“I wish I'd noticed sooner.”

“You noticed now.”

I looked toward the stairs.

Greta was laughing upstairs.

For once, I didn't feel the need to run after her.

I knew where she was.

I knew who she was with.

And most importantly, I knew she would tell me if something was wrong.

Two weeks later, the camp memories had become part of our normal conversation.

Greta still talked about canoeing.

She still wore the bracelet.

She still complained about the mosquitoes.

One evening, she was sitting beside me on the couch when she suddenly said, “Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“If I go back next summer, can I bring my friend?”

I smiled.

“Which friend?”

She named a girl from camp.

“The one who helped you with the canoe?”

“Yes.”

“That sounds like a good friend.”

She nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“Next time, I'll tell you if something happens.”

I squeezed her knee.

“Good.”

She leaned against my shoulder.

The room was quiet.

No phone calls.

No camp administrator.

No screenshots.

No frightened drive across town.

Just my daughter beside me.

And I finally understood that the most important thing she had brought home from camp wasn't the mug or the bracelets or the painted stone.

It was the willingness to tell the truth before someone else had to call me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Summer Was Supposed to Be Over, Yet One Message From Camp
