There were evenings when she went quiet after receiving a message. There were mornings when I asked an extra question and she answered with more honesty than she had before camp.

But ordinary had returned.

And I had learned not to take that for granted.

Greta went back to school.

She resumed her after-school activities.

She complained about homework.

She argued with me about bedtime.

She left wet towels on the bathroom floor.

I welcomed every irritating little habit.

They were proof that she felt safe enough to be herself again.

The bracelet she had made at camp remained around her wrist.

The blue and yellow threads had begun to fray.

I offered to replace it.

She refused.

“It’s supposed to look old.”

“It looks like it’s about to fall apart.”

“That means it has history.”

I smiled.

“Apparently you're an expert now.”

She grinned.

“Camp taught me things.”

I didn't ask what things.

Some lessons were hers to keep.

Then, one Tuesday afternoon, my phone rang while I was leaving the hospital.

The number was the camp.

I stopped beside my car.

For a moment, I simply stared at the screen.

I almost let it go to voicemail.

Instead, I answered.

“Hello?”

“Hi, this is Karen.”

My stomach tightened.

“Is something wrong?”

“No.”

She said it quickly.

Then she paused.

“I wanted to speak with you before I sent an email.”

That was not reassuring.

“What happened?”

“There was an issue involving one of the girls from the summer.”

I leaned against the car.

“Greta?”

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

Karen sighed.

“I don't want you to worry unnecessarily.”

“Then please don't make me guess.”

She was silent for a moment.

“We received a complaint from one of the parents.”

My stomach dropped.

“About Greta?”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“What kind of complaint?”

“The parent believes Greta has continued discussing the photograph and what happened at camp.”

I opened my eyes.

“That doesn't sound like something she would do.”

“I know.”

“Then why are we having this conversation?”

“Because the complaint includes screenshots.”

I felt the old coldness return to my hands.

“Send them to me.”

“I will.”

“Now.”

“All right.”

We ended the call.

I sat in my car without starting the engine.

A minute later, the email arrived.

I opened it.

There were three screenshots.

The first showed a conversation between several children.

Greta's name appeared in it.

My heart sank.

But I read carefully.

She wasn't talking about the photograph.

She was talking about something else.

The second screenshot was similar.

The third contained a sentence that made me stop.

Someone had written:

At least everyone knows what Greta did now.

I stared at the screen.

That wasn't Greta.

That was someone talking about her.

I called Karen immediately.

“This isn't what you think.”

“I know,” she said.

“You saw the messages?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say there was a complaint about her?”

“Because the parent who complained doesn't believe the screenshots tell the whole story.”

I sat back.

“What else is there?”

Karen hesitated.

“That's what I want to discuss.”

The following afternoon, I met Karen at the school.

She had requested the meeting because several of the children involved attended the same school.

Owen came too.

I hadn't asked him to.

He offered.

I accepted.

Greta stayed with my sister.

I didn't want her sitting in another room while adults discussed her.

Karen placed a folder on the table.

“I want to be clear,” she said. “We are not accusing Greta of anything.”

“Then what are we doing?”

“Trying to understand what happened after camp.”

She opened the folder.

There were more screenshots.

This time, they came from a group chat I didn't recognize.

The children had been discussing the summer.

Someone had mentioned the photograph.

Someone else had defended Greta.

Another child had accused her.

Then one message stood out.

You don't know why she did it.

A reply followed.

Neither does she.

Owen leaned closer.

“Who wrote that?”

Karen pointed to the name.

It was the girl Greta had hurt.

The same girl who had once apologized to her.

I looked at Karen.

“Did she say Greta was bothering her?”

“No.”

“Did she say Greta shared the picture again?”

“No.”

“Then what exactly is the problem?”

Karen folded her hands.

“The problem is that the children are still talking about what happened.”

I frowned.

“That isn't surprising.”

“No.”

“But it isn't the same as Greta causing it.”

“No.”

Owen leaned back.

“So why are we here?”

Karen looked at us.

“Because one child has become the target of the group.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Which child?”

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said the name.

The girl who had bullied Greta.

I looked down at the folder.

The pattern was repeating itself.

Different child.

Different messages.

Same cruelty.

Only now, Greta wasn't participating.

She had become the person watching it happen.

Karen continued.

“Greta has been defending her.”

I looked up.

“She has?”

“Yes.”

“She told the other children to stop.”

Karen nodded.

“She also told them they had no right to use the photograph against her.”

I felt something loosen in my chest.

Owen smiled faintly.

“That sounds like Greta.”

Karen nodded.

“It does.”

I looked at the screenshots again.

There was one message from Greta.

She had written:

What she did to me was wrong. What we're doing to her now is wrong too.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn't.

But because she understood something I had been trying to teach her.

Pain did not become justice simply because enough people joined it.

I looked at Owen.

“She gets it.”

He nodded.

“She really does.”

But Karen wasn't finished.

“There is one more thing.”

The relief disappeared.

“What?”

She reached into the folder and pulled out a printed photograph.

Not the original.

A picture of the original.

My heart stopped.

“Where did you get that?”

“The parent who complained sent it.”

I stared at the image.

“Why?”

Karen looked at me.

“Because the photograph has been circulating again.”

I felt sick.

“But Greta didn't send it.”

“We know.”

“Then who did?”

Karen's expression changed.

“We don't know.”

The room became silent.

Owen looked at the photograph.

“Someone had it saved.”

Karen nodded.

“And whoever has it may have been using it to intimidate the girl.”

I stared at the image.

The past had not stayed in the past.

Someone had carried it forward.

And suddenly, I understood that Greta's summer lesson was about to be tested in a way none of us had expected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Photograph Had Returned to the Children’s Phones, and Finding Its New Source Forced Us to Question Someone We Had Stopped Watching

For several weeks after Greta came home, life became ordinary again.
