There were no polished marble floors or quiet customers pretending not to listen. Every hallway seemed designed to discourage questions, and every door required a badge.

Mom sat beside me in a small conference room while Agent Jenkins arranged printed documents across the table. Dad stood near the window with his arms folded. Detective Hayes had already left to coordinate with the local investigators handling Valerie and Derek.

Nobody had slept much.

Mom looked at Dad occasionally, as though she still needed to reassure herself that he was real. Dad did the same with her.

I kept looking at the photograph from the safety deposit box.

It was strange to hold a picture of my parents when they were younger than I was now.

“Before we go through everything,” Agent Jenkins said, “there is something you need to understand. The documents your grandfather stored were important, but they were not the entire case.”

Dad nodded.

“I expected that.”

Jenkins placed a thin folder on the table.

“Three files are missing.”

Mom looked at her.

“Missing from where?”

“From the original evidence inventory.”

Dad's expression changed.

“Which files?”

“Financial transfers. A witness statement. And a record relating to a private account.”

Dad moved closer.

“Whose account?”

Jenkins looked at him.

“Rachel's.”

Mom went completely still.

“My account?”

“Yes.”

Dad turned toward her.

“Did you ever have an account at Northbridge Trust?”

Mom frowned.

“No.”

Jenkins slid a photocopy across the table.

The account was registered in Mom's name.

The opening date was thirteen years earlier.

Three weeks before Dad disappeared.

Mom shook her head.

“That isn't mine.”

Dad studied the document.

“Someone opened it using her identity.”

Jenkins nodded.

“And deposited $85,000.”

I stared at the number.

“Eighty-five thousand dollars?”

Mom looked as shocked as I was.

“I never had that kind of money.”

Jenkins continued.

“The account was closed four days after Thomas disappeared.”

Dad leaned over the document.

“There should be a withdrawal record.”

“There is.”

She placed another page on the table.

The signature was Mom's.

Except it wasn't.

Even I could see the difference.

Mom's signature always leaned sharply upward at the end.

The one on the document was flatter.

Dad noticed it too.

“Forged.”

Jenkins nodded.

“That is our working assumption.”

Mom rubbed her forehead.

“So someone used my identity to make it look like I was connected to the money.”

“Exactly.”

I remembered Valerie saying Mom had always had everything.

The thought made my chest tighten.

“Was Aunt Valerie involved in this too?”

Jenkins didn't answer immediately.

“We don't know yet.”

Mom looked down.

“I want the truth.”

“So do we,” Jenkins said.

She opened another folder.

“This is where things become complicated.”

Inside were copies of bank transfers.

The money moved through six accounts.

The first belonged to the fake account in Mom's name.

The second belonged to a company called Harrow Consulting.

The third belonged to an offshore corporation.

Then the trail disappeared.

Dad pointed at one of the names.

“This company.”

“What about it?”

“I saw it thirteen years ago.”

Jenkins looked at him.

“You never mentioned it.”

“I thought it had been dissolved.”

“It wasn't.”

Dad stared at the page.

“It was used to move money connected to the investigation.”

Mom asked quietly, “Who owned it?”

Jenkins turned another page.

“That's the problem.”

The listed owner was dead.

He had died seven years before the company was created.

Nobody spoke.

Dad pulled out a chair.

“Someone created the company using a dead man's identity.”

“That appears to be the case.”

I looked at Mom.

She was staring at the documents as if they might suddenly explain the last thirteen years.

Then she noticed something.

“Wait.”

She pointed to a date.

“This transfer happened after Thomas disappeared.”

Dad looked at her.

“That means whoever was moving the money knew I was alive.”

Jenkins nodded.

“That's what we believe.”

The room became silent.

I felt a chill move down my arms.

Dad hadn't simply been hiding from people who thought he was dead.

Someone had known he survived.

And they had continued watching him.

Jenkins finally said, “We think the network had someone inside the investigation.”

Dad's jaw tightened.

“An informant.”

“Possibly.”

Mom looked at him.

“Then how did you survive?”

Dad stared out the window.

“I didn't survive because I was clever.”

He paused.

“Someone warned me.”

I leaned forward.

“Who?”

Dad looked at me.

“I don't know.”

That answer bothered me.

“You don't know?”

“I received one phone call.”

“From who?”

“A woman.”

“What did she say?”

Dad's eyes hardened with memory.

“She told me to leave immediately. She said the people I trusted were no longer safe.”

Mom whispered, “Did she identify herself?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know she was telling the truth?”

“I didn't.”

He looked at his hands.

“But I had already discovered that someone inside the investigation was leaking information.”

Jenkins asked, “Did you ever hear the woman's voice again?”

“No.”

Mom looked down at the table.

I noticed her fingers trembling.

“Mom?”

She didn't answer.

“Mom?”

She finally looked at me.

“I've heard that voice.”

Dad turned toward her.

“When?”

Mom swallowed.

“Years ago.”

Dad stepped closer.

“Where?”

“At my sister's house.”

The room went silent.

Jenkins immediately reached for her notebook.

“When?”

“Maybe six years ago.”

“What happened?”

Mom thought carefully.

“Valerie had a friend visiting.
