For a few minutes, I lay still, listening to the house settle around me. The money was finally mine without conditions. Dad’s final letter was in the desk drawer. The foundation was operating. The workshop was being used. My marriage had survived.

Yet I felt no urge to spend.

Instead, I made coffee.

David came into the kitchen wearing sweatpants and an old T-shirt, his hair flattened on one side. He looked at me, then at the coffee pot. “You’re up early.”

“I couldn’t sleep.”

“Thinking about the money?”

“Thinking about Dad.”

He nodded. “Same thing, apparently.”

I smiled. “Not anymore.”

That distinction had taken years to learn. At first, Dad’s money had seemed inseparable from his death. Every dollar reminded me of what I had lost. Then it became a source of conflict. After that, it became a responsibility. Only recently had it started to feel like what it actually was: a resource I could use according to my own judgment.

David poured coffee and sat across from me.

“What do you want to do with the house?” he asked.

I knew exactly which house he meant.

Dad’s.

“I don't know.”

“You've been saying that for months.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the window. “Maybe you don't have to decide yet.”

That was another change in him. The old David would have said, “We should sell it,” or “We should renovate it,” or “We could make a fortune from it.” Now he could tolerate an unanswered question.

I realized how much peace there was in that.

The house remained exactly as it had been. Dad’s workbench stood in the garage. His tools were still arranged in their familiar order. The kitchen cabinets still carried tiny scratches from decades of use. His office still smelled faintly of paper and cedar.

I had thought preserving it would keep me trapped in grief.

Instead, it had become a place where the foundation could grow.

The workshop was already being used for training. Students came twice a month. Instructors held practical sessions. Local employers occasionally visited to speak about apprenticeships. Dad’s old workbench had become the centerpiece.

One afternoon, an instructor asked whether we could expand the program.

“We have more applicants than spaces,” she said.

“How many?”

“Almost three times as many.”

I looked at the numbers.

The answer was obvious.

We needed another workshop.

The foundation had enough resources.

I could fund it.

But I hesitated.

Not because I was afraid to spend.

Because I wanted to know whether expansion was wise.

I asked for a full proposal.

Costs.

Expected enrollment.

Instructor availability.

Insurance.

Maintenance.

Employment outcomes.

The instructor smiled.

“You sound like your father.”

“I'll take that as a compliment.”

“It is.”

I approved the expansion three weeks later.

The new space would be built behind Dad’s property, where an old storage structure stood unused. We would renovate rather than construct from scratch.

When David heard, he looked at the plans.

“This is what you want?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

No questions about whether it would increase the estate.

No suggestions about selling the property.

No concern about what the family might receive.

Just support.

I realized then that our marriage had entered a different stage.

The inheritance no longer sat between us.

We could talk about it without either of us becoming defensive.

That did not mean the past had disappeared.

Sometimes it surfaced unexpectedly.

One evening, I found David standing in the garage staring at Dad’s workbench.

“What are you thinking?”

He ran his fingers along the edge.

“I remember the first time I saw this.”

“When?”

“Before we were married.”

I looked at him.

“Your dad was repairing a broken cabinet.”

“You met him that day?”

David nodded.

“He asked me what I did for work.”

“You told him.”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

David smiled faintly.

“He asked whether I liked it.”

“You told him yes.”

“I lied.”

I laughed.

“You hated your job even then?”

“I hated parts of it.”

“And Dad knew?”

“Probably.”

David looked at the tools.

“He told me something.”

“What?”

“He said, ‘Don't spend your whole life trying to prove you deserve a life you don't actually enjoy.’”

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you ever tell me that?”

“I forgot.”

“You forgot?”

“I remembered the money conversations more.”

That answer was painful because it was honest.

Dad had tried to give David advice about life.

David had heard the financial part more loudly than the rest.

Maybe that was because David was afraid.

Maybe because he was tired.

Maybe because money seemed like a faster solution than changing himself.

We would never know completely.

But we no longer needed to.

The next month, the new workshop opened.

Maya attended the opening ceremony.

She had completed another certification and was working full-time for an electrical contractor.

She brought her children.

When she spoke, she thanked the foundation.

Then she thanked the people who had taught her.

Then she said something that stayed with me.

“Someone didn't give me a life.
