The custody agreement was clear. The children would spend part of the holiday with Sarah and part with me.

On paper, it was simple.

In reality, it meant dividing one day that had always belonged to all four of us.

For years, Sarah had cooked too much food. I had carved the turkey. Noah had stolen pieces of roasted potatoes before dinner. Lily had fallen asleep on the couch while the adults talked.

Now there would be two dinners.

Two kitchens.

Two sets of dishes.

Two places where the children would wonder whether enjoying themselves might hurt the parent they weren't with.

I decided early that I wouldn't let that happen.

On Thanksgiving morning, Noah came downstairs wearing sweatpants and one of my old basketball shirts.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Do we have to go to Mom's at noon?”

I put the coffee down.

“You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.”

He looked relieved.

“But I want to see her.”

“Then we'll go.”

“Can we bring the pie?”

“Of course.”

He thought for a second.

“Can we bring half?”

I smiled.

“That's probably what she would want.”

He nodded.

The pie went into a cardboard box.

Lily added a handwritten note.

It said, “Happy Thanksgiving, Mom.”

The handwriting was crooked.

Sarah opened the door when we arrived.

She had decorated the living room with autumn leaves and candles.

The smell of roasted turkey filled the house.

For a second, I felt the old life return.

Then I remembered that I was standing in my former home, not my current one.

Sarah hugged the children.

She hugged me too.

It was brief.

Careful.

“Happy Thanksgiving,” she said.

“You too.”

Noah carried the pie into the kitchen.

Lily followed.

Sarah watched them.

Then she looked at me.

“I made your favorite stuffing.”

I smiled faintly.

“You don't have to do that.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the kitchen.

“I just wanted them to have something familiar.”

“That makes sense.”

We stood there in silence.

The silence wasn't hostile anymore.

It was simply unfamiliar.

Then Noah called from the kitchen.

“Mom!”

Sarah turned.

“What?”

“Dad says the pie is half yours!”

Sarah laughed.

“Tell Dad I know how fractions work.”

Noah shouted back.

“He didn't say that!”

I laughed.

For a few minutes, everything felt almost normal.

But normal was no longer the goal.

Healthy was.

I stayed for lunch.

Not because the divorce had somehow disappeared.

Because the children asked.

We sat at the same table where so many family dinners had happened.

Noah sat between us.

Lily sat beside Sarah.

Nobody discussed lawyers.

Nobody discussed Marcus.

Nobody discussed the marriage.

We talked about school.

Basketball.

Lily's upcoming gymnastics meet.

The turkey was slightly dry.

The stuffing was excellent.

Noah complained about the cranberry sauce.

It was ordinary.

That was the gift.

After lunch, the children disappeared upstairs.

Sarah remained at the table.

“I didn't think we'd ever be able to do this.”

“Neither did I.”

She looked toward the ceiling.

“They seem happy.”

“They are.”

“Even after everything?”

I looked at her.

“Kids can adapt when adults stop making them responsible for the adults.”

She nodded.

“I think I finally understand that.”

I believed her.

Not because she said it.

Because of what she had been doing.

She had stopped asking Noah whether he preferred one house.

She had stopped asking Lily what happened at my house.

She no longer complained about me within earshot of the children.

She had even started sending me messages when something good happened.

Noah scored twenty points.

Lily learned a new routine.

Their teacher praised them.

Those messages weren't about us.

They were about them.

That mattered.

When it was time to leave, Lily hugged Sarah.

Noah did too.

Then he asked, “Mom, are you coming to Dad's tomorrow?”

Sarah smiled.

“If your dad is okay with it.”

I looked at Noah.

Then Sarah.

“Come.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

The next afternoon, Sarah arrived at my house with a container of leftovers.

Lily opened the door.

“Mom!”

Sarah stepped inside.

Noah was watching a basketball game.

He waved.

“Hey.”

She smiled.

“Hey.”

There was no tension.

No performance.

She put the food in the kitchen.

Then sat beside the children.

I watched from the doorway.

It was strange.

Not painful.

Just different.

We weren't husband and wife.

We were two parents who had finally learned how to stand on the same side of a problem.

The children.

Later that evening, after Sarah left, Noah helped me clear the table.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Mom seems happier.”

I looked at him.

“She does.”

“Are you?”

I thought about it.

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

I rinsed a plate.

He dried it.

Then he said something that stayed with me.

“I think holidays are better when nobody is pretending.”

I looked at him.

“Where did you learn that?”

He shrugged.

“From you.”

I laughed.

“I don't remember saying that.”

“You say stuff like that.”

“Apparently I do.”

He put the plate away.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for letting Mom come here.”

I stopped.

“You don't have to thank me.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“But I wanted to.”

I nodded.

“Then you're welcome.”

He went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen.

The house was quiet.

For years, I had thought the end of a marriage meant the end of traditions.

Maybe it didn't.

Maybe traditions weren't tied to buildings or legal documents.

Maybe they belonged to people.

The following Christmas, we created another arrangement.

Christmas Eve with Sarah.

Christmas morning with me.

Christmas afternoon together.

It worked.

Not perfectly.

Lily woke up too early.

Noah complained that his basketball shoes were the wrong size.

Sarah brought too many gifts.

I burned the cinnamon rolls.

Everyone laughed.

At one point, Sarah and I stood in the kitchen while the children opened presents.

She watched them.

“Do you ever think about what would've happened if Noah hadn't said anything?”

I knew exactly what she meant.

“Yes.”

“What do you think?”

“I think we would've kept pretending.”

She nodded.

“For how long?”

“Maybe years.”

She looked down.

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

She wiped her eyes.

“But I'm glad he told you.”

I looked at her.

“So am I.”

She smiled faintly.

“Even though it destroyed us?”

“It didn't destroy us.”

She looked surprised.

“The marriage ended.”

“Yes.”

“But we're still here.”

She nodded.

“And the kids are okay.”

“They're more than okay.”

She smiled.

Noah yelled from the living room.

“Dad! Mom! Come look!”

We walked in together.

He had built a complicated Lego basketball arena.

It was crooked.

It was enormous.

And he was proud of it.

Sarah crouched beside him.

“That's amazing.”

I smiled.

“Looks structurally questionable.”

Noah frowned.

“Dad!”

Sarah laughed.

For a moment, the past disappeared.

Not erased.

Just no longer controlling the room.

That night, after the children went to bed, Sarah left.

I stood at the door and watched her drive away.

There was sadness.

But there was no longing for the old version of our marriage.

That surprised me.

I didn't want it back.

Not because it had never mattered.

Because I finally understood that what we had been pretending to preserve had already been gone.

The marriage ended long before the papers were signed.

The truth simply made the ending visible.

And perhaps that was why the new version of our family felt more peaceful.

There was nothing left to hide.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When Sarah Finally Told Me What Happened Before Marcus Entered Our House, I Realized the Affair Had Started With a Wound Neither of Us Had Faced

Thanksgiving arrived without warning, even though it had been marked on every calendar in the house for months.
