I still drank coffee from the same blue mug. I still helped with laundry when I felt like it. I still picked up groceries on Tuesdays and watched my grandchildren when Colin and Jessica needed an evening out.

But underneath all of it was the knowledge that I could leave whenever I wanted.

That knowledge was both comforting and painful.

Before the lottery, every disagreement had carried a practical threat. If Jessica was unhappy, I worried about becoming a burden. If Colin seemed irritated, I wondered whether he regretted asking me to move in. I had learned to compromise before anyone asked me to.

Now I began asking myself a harder question.

If I were not afraid of losing my place in this house, would I still tolerate the way I was treated?

The answer changed slowly.

Then it became obvious.

I still loved Colin.

I loved Lucas and Sophie.

I even cared about Jessica, despite everything.

But love did not require surrendering every decision about my own life.

One Saturday morning, I heard Jessica and Colin talking in the dining room.

Their voices were low.

I was not trying to listen.

Then I heard my name.

I stopped in the hallway.

“She can't stay here forever,” Jessica said.

Colin sighed.

“I know.”

“We need to make a plan.”

“She’s my mother.”

“And I'm not saying we abandon her.”

There was a pause.

Then Jessica said, “I'm saying we find somewhere appropriate.”

I stood motionless.

Colin did not answer immediately.

When he finally did, his voice sounded tired.

“Let’s talk about it later.”

I walked away before they could discover me.

That evening, Colin acted as though nothing had happened.

He asked whether I wanted chicken or pasta.

I said chicken.

He smiled.

That was the moment I realized how easy it was for people to separate kindness from decisions that quietly hurt someone.

A month later, Jessica began leaving brochures on the kitchen counter.

Most were for retirement communities.

One had a photograph of a bright dining room with potted plants near enormous windows.

I picked it up.

“Oakridge?”

Jessica looked over from the sink.

“Oh.
