Through my attorney, I had purchased it in April, quietly and without changing anything about the household.

The deed had been recorded.

The mortgage was paid.

The property was mine.

I had initially bought it for a simple reason: investment.

The neighborhood was good. The schools were good. The property had value.

And if I could protect the roof over my grandchildren's heads while making a sensible investment, I saw no harm in it.

But after the Oakridge conversation, I no longer wanted to remain tied to that house.

My attorney asked whether I wanted to terminate the lease immediately.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. Give them the full notice period.”

“Thirty days?”

“Yes.”

I wanted them to have time.

I wanted to leave without cruelty.

But I also wanted the boundary to be unmistakable.

That afternoon, I drove to the cottage.

The house was small compared with Colin's place.

The paint on the porch railing needed attention.

The kitchen cabinets were older than I was willing to admit.

The yard was slightly wild.

I loved it immediately.

I stood on the porch and listened to the wind moving through the trees.

A neighbor named Helen was walking her dog down the road.

She waved.

I waved back.

“You finally got your place!” she called.

I smiled.

“Yes.”

She stopped at the gate.

“You moving in soon?”

“Very soon.”

She grinned.

“Well, I'll save you a tomato from my garden.”

I laughed.

“Then I'll have to come back.”

That conversation lasted less than a minute.

Yet it gave me something I had not felt in Colin's house for years.

Anticipation.

Not guilt.

Not obligation.

Anticipation.

I spent the next few weeks quietly preparing.

I hired movers.

I chose a new bed.

I ordered curtains.

I had a locksmith change nothing yet, because there was no reason to create drama before I was ready.

I also established education trusts for Lucas and Sophie.

That decision mattered more to me than anything else.

The money would never be a bargaining chip.

They would not grow up believing their grandmother's fortune was something they could demand, negotiate over, or use to control one another.

Their future would be protected.

But it would not belong to their parents.

When Colin eventually learned that the children had trusts, he would know that I had planned for them long before this conflict reached its breaking point.

For now, I told nobody.

Then came the morning the certified letter arrived.

I was in the kitchen when I heard the mail slot click.

Colin was already awake.

He walked toward the front door, picked up the envelope, and glanced at it.

His expression changed.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

He turned the envelope over.

“This is from the landlord.”

Jessica came into the hallway.

“What?”

Colin opened it.

He read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His face went pale.

“What is it?” Jessica asked.

He didn't answer.

She moved closer.

“Colin?”

He held the paper out.

“We're being given thirty days.”

Jessica snatched it.

“The landlord is terminating our lease.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“They're selling the house.”

She looked at me.

I kept drinking my coffee.

“We always pay our rent on time,” she said.

Colin swallowed.

“It doesn't matter.”

“Who does this?”

“I don't know.”

She read the notice again.

Then Colin noticed another sheet inside the envelope.

“What is this?”

He pulled it out.

It was a letter.

Handwritten.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Mom?”

Jessica took the paper from him.

She read the first line.

Her eyes widened.

“Why is there a letter from you inside our landlord's envelope?”

I set my coffee cup down.

“Because I am your landlord.”

Neither of them moved.

The silence that followed was so complete that I could hear the refrigerator motor turning on.

Colin stared at me.

“What?”

“I own this house.”

Jessica gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“You don't.”

“I do.”

Colin looked from me to the smiled.

“How could I?”

“Yes.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“That is an interesting question coming from someone who selected a senior revenge?”

“No.”

“Then what is it?”

“A decision.”

“You planned this.”

“Not at first.”

I looked at the notice.

“When I bought this house, I thought I was protecting my grandchildren's stability.”

Jessica's face tightened.

“You've been spying on us?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I had the ability to help.”

“And now you're taking it away.”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“You are not entitled to someone else's help simply because you became comfortable receiving counter.

Oakridge.

He looked at it.

Then back at me.

“You're leaving.”

“Yes.”

“You're actually
