My shoulders ached. My eyes burned. All I wanted was a shower, a glass of water, and ten quiet minutes before bed.

Then I opened the front door and heard laughter.

Not ordinary family laughter. This was the loose, satisfied kind that came after good food and expensive wine. Glasses clinked somewhere beyond the hallway. Someone was talking loudly about a restaurant. I caught the buttery smell of garlic, roasted seafood, and something sweet with citrus.

For a moment, I stood there with my work bag still hanging from my shoulder.

It was strange because nobody had mentioned dinner.

I walked toward the dining room, expecting to see my husband, Julian, his mother Beatrice, and Chloe, his younger sister, gathered around the table. Instead, the room was brightly lit and crowded with dishes I hadn’t bought that week.

A silver platter held lobster tails. Another was piled with prawns. Bottles of wine stood open beside crystal glasses. Beatrice was laughing with Chloe while Julian carved something at the center of the table.

Nobody noticed me.

Or perhaps they did and simply didn’t care enough to look up.

I took one step backward.

The kitchen was dark.

That was when I heard the soft scrape of a plastic fork against a paper cup.

“Maya?”

The movement stopped.

My eleven-year-old daughter sat at the small counter beside the refrigerator. The overhead light was off. The only illumination came from the faint glow of the microwave clock and the yellow light above the stove.

She was wearing her school sweatshirt and pajama pants.

In front of her sat a cup of instant noodles.

The noodles had already gone soft. She was eating them slowly, almost carefully, as though she were trying to make the meal last.

I put my bag down.

“What are you doing in here?”

She looked at me, then immediately lowered her eyes.

“Eating dinner.”

I glanced toward the dining room.

“You didn’t eat with everyone?”

Her shoulders moved in a tiny shrug.

I pulled out the chair beside her and sat down.

“Maya.”

She kept looking at the noodles.

“Did Grandma tell you to stay in here?”

Her fingers tightened around the plastic fork.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “She said you and I don’t deserve what they’re having.”

The words were so quiet that I almost convinced myself I’d heard them incorrectly.

“What?”

Maya swallowed.

“She said your money is for Dad and her.”

Something inside me went completely still.

I looked through the doorway toward the dining room.

Julian was smiling.

Beatrice was raising her glass.

Chloe was showing someone something on her phone.

Nobody had come looking for Maya.

I turned back to my daughter.

“Did you ask to sit at the table?”

She nodded.

“And?”

“Grandma said there wasn’t enough room.”

I stared at the dining table.

There were six chairs.

Only four people were sitting there.

Maya saw my expression and quickly added, “It’s okay, Mom.”

That hurt more than the insult.

It was the way she said it.

Not angry.

Not crying.

Used to it.

I reached for her cup.

“You’re not eating this alone.”

She looked nervous.

“Mom, please don’t make everyone mad.”

“I am not worried about making them mad.”

I stood.

Maya grabbed my wrist.

“Please.”

I looked down at her small hand.

“What are you afraid is going to happen?”

She didn’t answer.

I gently covered her hand with mine.

“You’re my daughter.
