Julian was still dealing with the consequences of his financial crimes, Beatrice had begun making repayments under the court order, and the old house had been sold.

I had stopped checking the mailbox with dread.

Until the Tuesday morning when I found an envelope addressed to Maya.

The return address belonged to the county court.

I stood in the hallway holding it.

My first instinct was to open it.

Then I stopped.

The envelope was hers.

I placed it on the kitchen counter and waited until she came home from school.

When Maya saw it, she frowned.

“Why did the court send me something?”

“I don't know.”

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a notice concerning the repayment of her stolen savings.

The court had ordered the money to be placed in a protected account in her name.

She read the first paragraph twice.

“Does this mean I get my money back?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Eventually.”

She looked relieved.

Then she frowned.

“Mom?”

“What?”

“Why does Grandma have to pay me?”

“Because the court determined she was responsible for taking the money.”

Maya stared at the page.

“But Dad told her to do it.”

I nodded.

“He did.”

“Then why isn't Dad paying?”

“He has other obligations.”

She looked at me for a long time.

“That's not fair.”

“No.”

She folded the letter.

“Can I still love Grandma?”

The question caught me off guard.

“Yes.”

“Even if she did something bad?”

“Yes.”

“Can you love someone and still not let them hurt you?”

I smiled faintly.

“That might be one of the most important things you'll ever learn.”

She nodded.

Then she placed the letter beside her plate.

“I want to save the money.”

“For what?”

She shrugged.

“College.”

I laughed softly.

“You don't have to decide that today.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“But I want to.”

That evening, Harrison called.

He said the repayment arrangement was progressing.

Then his tone changed.

“There is something else.”

I sat down.

“What?”

“Julian has filed a request concerning Maya.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of request?”

“Visitation.”

I closed my eyes.

Maya was in the living room doing homework.

“Does he have the right?”

“He can request it.”

“Can he get it?”

“That depends.”

“On what?”

“Several factors.”

I looked toward the living room.

“Does Maya have to see him?”

“No.”

The answer gave me some relief.

Then Harrison said something that changed the entire conversation.

“Julian claims you have been turning her against him.”

I almost laughed.

“She's eleven.”

“I know.”

“He barely contacted her.”

“That will be part of the evidence.”

I remembered the months before the divorce.

Julian had been physically present but emotionally absent.

He had rarely asked about Maya's school.

He had forgotten her soccer tournament.

He had missed her science presentation.

He had been too busy with debts, secret accounts, and Vanessa.

Yet now he wanted to prove that I was keeping his daughter from him.

“I want to know exactly what he's asking for.”

Harrison said he would send the filing.

When it arrived, I read it twice.

Julian described himself as a devoted father.

He claimed that I had deliberately isolated Maya.

He stated that my “unstable behavior” after the separation had damaged their relationship.

He requested regular visitation.

At the bottom of the page was his signature.

I stared at it.

Then I looked toward Maya.

She was lying on the floor with a pencil between her teeth.

She looked peaceful.

I folded the papers.

I wouldn't put this burden on her without necessity.

But I would not allow Julian to rewrite history either.

The hearing was scheduled for the following month.

Until then, I tried to keep life normal.

One Saturday, Maya asked if we could visit the old neighborhood.

I hesitated.

“Why?”

“I want to see the house.”

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“I don't know.”

We drove there.

The house was empty.

The new owners hadn't moved in yet.

I parked across the street.

Maya stared through the windshield.

“That's where Grandma made me sit.”

I nodded.

“I remember.”

“I thought she hated me.”

“She was wrong.”

Maya looked at the house.

“Do you think she hates me now?”

“No.”

“Then why did she do it?”

I didn't have an answer.

Adults sometimes damaged people they claimed to love.

That contradiction was difficult to explain to a child.

Maya looked down.

“I don't want to go inside.”

“Then we won't.”

She smiled.

“Can we get ice cream?”

“Absolutely.”

We drove away.

Halfway to the shop, my phone rang.

It was Harrison.

“Clara, I need you to come by the office.”

“Is something wrong?”

“Not necessarily.”

That was never a comforting phrase.

When I arrived, he had another folder waiting.

He pushed it across the desk.

“This came from the forensic accountant.”

I opened it.

There were records of several transfers made years earlier.

Before the gambling.

Before Vanessa.

Before the renovation plan.

The amounts were small.

But the recipient name appeared repeatedly.

Beatrice.

I looked up.

“What is this?”

Harrison pointed to the dates.

“These transfers started shortly after your father died.”

I stared at the pages.

My father had died six years earlier.

At that time, Julian had told me Beatrice was struggling financially.

He had suggested I help her.

I had agreed.

I had never questioned it.

Harrison continued.

“These payments were described as family support.”

I swallowed.

“How much?”

“Approximately sixty thousand dollars over four years.”

I stared at the figure.

That was not what shocked me.

It was the final transfer.

The description read:

Property contribution.

My father's old house.

I looked at Harrison.

“What does that mean?”

“We're still investigating.”

He handed me another page.

There had been a private agreement concerning the property.

A document I had never seen.

My name appeared on it.

But the signature was wrong.

I knew immediately.

That wasn't my signature.

Harrison leaned back.

“This may change the property case.”

I felt cold.

“What property case?”

“The old house may not have been entirely what you thought it was.”

I looked at the document again.

The date was six years earlier.

Three months after my father died.

And beneath my forged signature was Beatrice's name.

For the first time since leaving the house, I realized the theft hadn't started with Maya's savings.

It had started years earlier.

Someone had been taking pieces of our family from me long before I noticed the missing money.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Forged Signature Reached Back Six Years,
