another two weeks.

When she finally went home, her daughter cried.

So did I.

Marcus stood beside the entrance.

Evelyn hugged him.

“You're a good man.”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“I haven't always been.”

She smiled.

“Neither have I.”

After she left, Marcus returned to the office.

He found me looking through the original plans for the residence.

“There is something missing,” he said.

“What?”

“A family room.”

I looked at him.

“Families need somewhere to sit together.”

“We have the dining area.”

“That's not the same.”

He was right.

The residents needed a place where children could visit without feeling like they were entering a medical facility.

We created one.

Books.

Board games.

Soft chairs.

A television.

A small table for crafts.

Photographs on the walls.

We invited families to spend time there.

The change was immediate.

Children stayed longer.

Residents smiled more.

People began seeing recovery as part of family life rather than separation from it.

One afternoon, Chloe helped paint a mural.

She drew stars across a blue wall.

“Why stars?”

“Because Grandpa is watching.”

I smiled.

She added another star.

“This one is Grandma.”

I laughed.

“I haven't died yet.”

“I know.”

She grinned.

“It's just a star.”

Marcus stood nearby.

“You've got a lot of stars.”

“Everyone gets one.”

He looked at the mural.

“Even me?”

Chloe considered it.

“Yes.”

Marcus smiled.

“Thank you.”

Later, he asked me whether I had heard from Arthur's attorney.

“No.”

“Is there anything left?”

“I don't think so.”

But I wasn't entirely sure.

The question stayed with me.

Arthur had hidden so many things.

I had learned never to assume a locked drawer contained nothing.

A week later, Valerie called.

“There is one more issue.”

My heart sank.

“What now?”

“The charitable trust has an old liability.”

“What kind?”

“An environmental claim connected to one of Arthur's former industrial properties.”

“Is it serious?”

“It could be.”

The property had been sold years earlier.

The new owner had discovered contamination beneath part of the land.

The buyer claimed Arthur's company had failed to disclose historical chemical storage.

The foundation could be exposed to a large legal claim.

Marcus joined the meeting.

We reviewed everything.

The old records were incomplete.

But Arthur had kept one file.

The warehouse.

We returned again.

This time, we found an environmental inspection report.

It had been commissioned before the property was sold.

The report showed contamination.

But it also showed that Arthur's company had already begun remediation.

The work had been completed.

The buyer had received a copy.

The lawsuit appeared to be based on an allegation that the remediation had never occurred.

The records proved otherwise.

The case was eventually dismissed.

Another problem survived.

The foundation's operating budget was strained.

We had expanded too quickly.

Marcus admitted it.

“We need to slow down.”

I nodded.

“That's what your father would have done.”

Marcus smiled.

“He would have called it being careful.”

“He would have called it boring.”

We laughed.

The residence survived.

Not because it had unlimited money.

Because we learned to use what we had responsibly.

One evening, I sat alone in Arthur's study.

I looked at his chair.

For the first time, I didn't feel the need to imagine what he would say.

I knew.

He would tell me I had done enough.

That it was time to live.

I touched the photograph on the desk.

“I wish you were here.”

The words came quietly.

Then I noticed something behind the frame.

A folded piece of paper.

My heart stopped.

I pulled it free.

It was Arthur's handwriting.

Only three lines.

I had seen them before.

On another document.

The same phrase.

Emergency access only.

But beneath it was something new.

A date.

And a location.

The location wasn't a bank.

It was the first house Arthur and I had ever owned.

I stared at the paper.

We had sold that house thirty years earlier.

Or so I believed.

I called Valerie.

She answered.

“I found another note.”

There was silence.

“What does it say?”

I gave her the location.

Her breathing changed.

“Margaret, don't go there alone.”

“Why?”

“Because that property still has something registered under Arthur's name.”

My pulse quickened.

“What?”

“I don't know.”

“Then let's find out.”

The next morning, Marcus came with me.

The house looked nothing like I remembered.

A different family lived there.

We were preparing to leave when an elderly neighbor approached.

“You're Arthur Bennett's wife.”

I stared at her.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“I've been waiting years to meet you.”

<a
